Riff Raff Game Rules
Ahoy there, matey! Let me tell you all about the fantastical game of Riff Raff. Prepare yourself for a whimsical adventure on the high seas!
Now, me hearties, let me explain the rules of this here game. The goal is to carefully balance various objects on the ship without making it all go topsy-turvy. You see, the ship is constantly rocking and rolling, making it quite the challenge.
To start, you’ll need to gather a crew of fearless sailors. These sailors will take turns placing different items on the ship: barrels, treasure chests, and even cannons. But be wary, matey, because each of these items brings its own unique challenge.
Barrels need to be placed in the cargo hold, while treasure chests must remain on the top deck. As for the cannons, they can only be placed on the sides of the ship. It’s a delicate dance, and one wrong move could send everything tumbling into the watery depths.
To add an extra layer of excitement, the game also includes action cards. These cards spice things up by introducing special events, such as a mighty storm or a mischievous seagull. You’ll have to adapt and react quickly to keep your items in place.
Now, don’t be fooled into thinking this is an easy game, my friend. It takes a steady hand and a sharp mind to conquer the challenges of Riff Raff. But fear not! The more you play, the better you’ll become at balancing those wobbly objects.
Riff Raff is a game that will have you on the edge of your seat, teetering between victory and defeat. You’ll experience the thrill of success when you manage to keep everything in place, and the frustration of failure when it all comes crashing down.
So gather your crew, set sail, and prepare for an adventure like no other. With Riff Raff, you’ll embark on a journey full of laughter, excitement, and plenty of surprises. Are you ready to test your skills and become the ultimate master of equilibrium? Yo ho ho, let’s find out!

Yo ho ho, mateys! Pirates are the least of Captain Bullseye’s worries. He’s got his precious cargo stashed way up high on the yardarms, out of reach from those peg-legged scoundrels.
But this tricky way of keeping things safe has its downsides. Many a seasoned sailor has found themselves in a sticky situation, struggling to keep their balance halfway up the mast.
In this particular case, it’s like they’ve been cursed by the ship’s mischievous gremlin. The chests teeter on wobbly planks, threatening to send the whole ship toppling over in the rolling waves. But fear not! Faster than you can say “landlubber,” Captain Bullseye’s crew swoops in, snatching the falling cargo out of the air.
The Ins and Outs

- I have a wooden ship made up of 10 parts.
- I have a deck of 40 playing cards, with 4 different colors.
- I have 32 different cargo items, grouped into 4 sets of 8 types.
- I have 2 wave stands.
Getting Ready
So, here’s how we start. I’ve got this cool wooden ship – and let me tell you, it’s got 10 different parts that fit together. Then there’s this deck of cards, with 40 amazing cards that come in 4 different colors. And get this, I’ve also got 32 unique cargo items, all neatly divided into 4 sets, each set with 8 different types. Oh, and don’t forget the 2 wave stands. They’re pretty important too!
Now that we’ve got all our stuff laid out, it’s time to set up the game. Let’s dive in!
Hey there! Let’s talk about bending some waves and putting them in a box. It might sound a little strange, but it’s actually a pretty cool experiment. So here’s what you need to do:
First, grab two waves – any kind will do. Now, take those waves and bend them. Yup, you heard me right – give them a little curve. But here’s the fun part: bend them at an angle and put them in the bottom of a box. How cool is that?
Now, you might be wondering why on earth we’re doing this. Well, it turns out that bending waves and putting them at an angle can create some pretty interesting things. By doing this, we can learn more about how waves travel and interact with each other.
Okay, so let’s break it down. When we bend the waves, it’s like we’re giving them a little twist. And when we put them in the box at an angle, it’s like we’re giving them a special playground to play in. They bounce off the walls of the box, collide with each other, and create all sorts of wacky patterns.
But here’s the really cool part – by studying these patterns, we can start to understand how waves behave. We can see how they move, how they reflect, how they diffract – all that fun stuff.
So why does this matter? Well, waves are all around us. We see them in the ocean, we hear them in music, we even use them to talk to our friends on our phones. Understanding how waves work can help us make better technology, like faster internet or clearer sound. Plus, it’s just really neat to see how our world is filled with hidden patterns and mysteries.
So there you have it – bending waves and putting them in a box might seem a little strange at first, but it’s actually a pretty cool experiment. Plus, you get to learn all about how waves work and how they interact with each other. So go on, give it a try – you won’t be disappointed!
When I’m out on the water, one thing I love to do is stick a wooden ring on the hole that I created “on the waves”. It’s a simple activity, but it brings me so much joy and excitement.
When I place the joint of the ball-bar on the wooden ring, something interesting happens. The ball sinks into the hole, and the two retaining rods rest in the troughs of the ring. It’s remarkable how everything fits together perfectly, like a puzzle piece finding its place.
So here’s the deal – you gotta put the hull on top of the ball-bar, okay? It might sound a little confusing, but don’t worry, I’ll break it down for you. Now, listen up: first, take the hull and carefully place it on the ball-bar. Yes, that’s right, just set it right on top. Easy, right?
Okay, let’s talk about putting the ship’s mast into the hull. It might sound a bit confusing at first, but don’t worry, I’ll explain it to you. When you put the mast into the hull, you’re basically connecting the tall part of the ship to the main body. It’s like putting the puzzle pieces together to build a complete ship.
First, you’ll need to have the hull ready. The hull is the big, hollow part of the ship where everything else is going to fit. It’s like a giant container that holds everything together. Make sure the hull is stable and in the right position before you start putting in the mast.
Now, the mast is the tall vertical structure that stands upright on the ship. It’s usually made of wood or metal and it’s the part that holds the sails. The mast is like the backbone of the ship, giving it stability and strength.
To put the mast into the hull, you’ll need to carefully lower it into place. It’s a delicate operation because you want to make sure it fits perfectly and is secure. You might need some help from others to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Once you’ve lowered the mast into the hull, you’ll need to secure it properly. This is usually done with ropes or other fastenings. You want to make sure the mast is firmly attached to the hull so it doesn’t wobble or fall over.
And there you have it! That’s how you put the ship’s mast into the hull. It’s an important step in building a ship because without a mast, the ship wouldn’t be able to sail. So, next time you see a ship, you’ll know how its parts come together to make it complete.

So, what you gotta do is take a little round bar and stick it right through the lowest hole of the ship’s mast.
Hey there! Let me explain something interesting to you. Take a look at this picture. See that lower yardarm with the numbers 5 and 6? I bet you’re wondering what to do with it, right?
Well, here’s the deal. You need to lay that lower yardarm on this small round bar. Why, you ask? Because there are a few important reasons why you should do it. Let me break it down for you.
First of all, it’s important to know that this action helps to elevate and regenerate response. It’s like a secret code that awakens something special in the system. By doing this, you’re setting things in motion, and that’s pretty cool, don’t you think?
And if you like that feeling of things coming to life, then you’ll love what happens next. The lower yardarm on the round bar acts as a sort of double-edged sword – sharp on both sides, if you will. It creates a unique energy that flows through the system, causing a powerful effect.
Now, let’s talk about what this means for you. When you lay the lower yardarm on the round bar, something fascinating happens. It’s like the start of an adventure, full of mystery and excitement. Your mind starts to work differently, interpreting things in a new light.
Imagine this – you’re looking at the numbers 5 and 6 on the lower yardarm, and suddenly, a whole world of possibilities opens up. You start to see connections and patterns that you never noticed before. It’s like having a secret superpower that allows you to understand things in a whole new way.
So, my friend, if you’re looking for a way to unlock your hidden potential and discover a whole new level of understanding, then laying the lower yardarm on the round bar is the way to go. It may seem simple, but trust me, it’s a small action that can have a big impact.
So go ahead, give it a try. Follow these instructions and get ready to embark on a journey of discovery and enlightenment. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

In the task of repeating steps F and G, pay close attention to the middle yardarm. Ensure that you follow the same procedure as before. After completing the middle yardarm, move on to the upper yardarm and repeat the process once more. This will involve carrying out steps F and G in the exact same manner as before.

Alright, let’s get started! Here’s what you need to know:
First, place the ship in the middle of the table. That’s your starting point.
Now, it’s time for each player to prepare. Each player should:
- Choose a set of cards in one color and hold them in their hand.
- Gather 8 different wooden items – a boat, barrel, flask, box, sailor, plank, rat, and chest. Put these items in front of you, where everyone can see.
Your Goal
The objective of the game is simple – be the first player to collect all eight cargo items and bring them onboard the ship. That’s how you win!
How to Play
Before we start, we need to choose a captain. The oldest player can take on this role.
Now, let’s begin the first round. Here’s what you do:
Each player picks one card from their set and places it facedown on the table in front of them. Remember, keep it a secret for now.
Once everyone has chosen a card, it’s time to reveal them. On the count of three, flip your cards over and show them to everyone.
When we play this game, things start off by each player playing a card. The player who plays the highest card becomes the captain. If a few players play the same highest card, the captain gets to decide who becomes the new captain.
The new captain then takes their turn first. The player who played the second highest card goes next, and so on. If multiple players played the same card, the captain gets to decide the order in which they take their turns.
After everyone has taken their turn, the round is over. The cards that were played stay where they are and cannot be taken back; this means that each card is only available to each player once throughout the whole game.
Loading The Ship
When it’s your turn, you pick one of your wooden pieces and place it on the ship. The number on the card you played tells you where exactly on the ship you need to place your piece.
When you’re in a specific area on a yardarm (areas 5 to 10) and there are already wooden pieces there before your turn, you have the option to load two more pieces.
Before starting your turn, you must decide if you want to load one or two pieces. Once you make your decision, you can’t change it during your turn.
Here’s how it works:
- You can use one hand or both hands to place the chosen wooden pieces on the ship.
- The cargo can stick out beyond the ship’s edge, but it can’t go into other areas of the ship.
- While loading, you can’t physically touch the wooden pieces already in place, but you can use the piece you just loaded to push them around.
Losing and Protecting Cargo
If cargo falls off the ship, my turn ends right away. But I should try my best to catch any falling pieces. Any pieces that I manage to catch with one hand or both hands are taken out of the game.
If I am not able to catch any pieces and they fall down, I have to place them in front of me where everyone can see. Later on in the game, I will have to load them back onto the ship.

Starting a Fresh Round
Once everyone has taken their turns, a new round begins.
Each player selects one of their remaining cards and places it on top of their previous cards, making sure that only the most recent card is visible.
The captain from the previous round remains in charge until all cards for the new round are revealed. The player who played the highest card becomes the new captain.
If multiple players have the highest card, the previous captain decides which of them will become the new captain.
Game Over
If a player has no remaining pieces at the end of their turn, the game ends and they are declared the winner. The current round does not finish.
When we play the game, it eventually comes to an end. This happens if nobody manages to succeed after playing all the cards for 10 rounds. The person with the least number of wooden pieces left is declared the winner, and there can be multiple winners.
In a game with only two players, once all the cards have been played, the players collect their cards and the game continues.
If none of the players manage to get rid of all their wooden pieces even after the second round of playing all the cards, then the game is over.
