Setting Up the Game

First things first, you’ll need some paper and a pencil to keep score. Place all the tiles face down in the center of the playing area.

Make sure to mix the tiles up really well. Each player should grab two trade tokens of the same color. These tokens will come in handy later.

Playing the Game

For 3 or 4 Players.

If you’re playing with 3 players, put the two highest value scoring sticks in the center of the playing area. If you’re playing with 4 players, place all three scoring sticks in the center.

Each player should now draw 24 tiles and keep them face down. Leave the rest of the tiles in the center of the playing area, face down as well. Once everyone has their tiles, one player says “go” and the game begins!

When we start playing, we all flip our tiles and rush to place them in our own grid, like we’re solving a crossword puzzle. We try to match either the designs or the colors on the tiles. Take a look at the grid below to see how it looks while we’re playing.

Now, let’s say you’re the first player and you realize there’s a mistake in your grid while you’re waiting for the other players to finish. No worries! You can simply return the scoring stick to the center and fix your grid.

Here’s the thing: there’s no penalty for needing to return a scoring stick. However, any player who successfully completes their grid after you return the stick will have a chance at getting the highest score for the round. As players finish their grids correctly, they get to claim a scoring stick for themselves.

When all the scoring sticks have been collected, the round is over. The player who finishes their grid last or is unable to finish their grid will not receive a scoring stick.

Calculating Points

Before scoring, make sure to check all grids for any errors. There should be no rows or columns with only two tiles, and no duplicate colors or designs. If a mistake is found in a grid, the scoring stick of that player will be passed to the player with the next highest-value stick. The next player will then pass their stick to the following stick holder.

The person who didn’t complete their grid or finished last now has one minute to challenge the player with the mistaken grid for the final scoring stick. Use the timer to keep track of this additional minute of gameplay.

When you and I play this game, the goal is to be the first one to finish our grids correctly. If we don’t finish before the timer runs out, neither of us scores any points.

You earn points based on the value of your scoring stick. For every trade token you don’t use, you get 1 point.

Once we finish scoring the round, we put all the tiles back face down in the center. We mix them up with all the other tiles so we can start the next round. And don’t forget to take your trade tokens back if you used any!

Game Over

The game ends when someone reaches a score of 24. That’s when a winner is declared.

For Younger Players

If you’re younger, we can make the game easier by removing the rule that requires each row and column to have more than two tiles. But remember, playing with fewer than 24 tiles doesn’t necessarily mean an easier game.

Two-Person Playtime

When you’re playing a game with just two people, we won’t be needing the scoring sticks. Instead, we’ll be following the rules designed for games with three or four players, but with a few changes:

After a player finishes placing all 24 tiles on their grid, they need to announce “done”. The other player then confirms that the grid is correct – this means no rows or columns with just two tiles, and no repeating colors or designs.

If there are errors in the grid, no worries! You can keep playing without any consequences. But if the grid is correct, the remaining player has one whole minute to complete their own grid. We’ll start the timer as soon as we confirm the winner’s grid. And once the time runs out, that round is over.

Calculating Points

The player who gets their grid finished first will earn 4 points. On top of that, they’ll get an extra point for each trade token they didn’t use during the game.

If I’m the last player left and I manage to finish my grid before the timer ends, I earn 2 points plus 1 point for every trade token I didn’t use.

If I can’t complete my grid in time, I score 1 point for each unused trade token.

The Game Ends

Once someone reaches a score of 20, they win the game.
