Getting Ready

1. Place the gameboard in the middle of the playing area, on a flat surface.
2. Take out the Rent Dodge card and put it next to the Free Parking space. Keep it separate from the Chance cards.
3. Give each player a Reminder card to help them during the game.
4. Shuffle the Chance cards and create a facedown pile next to the board.
5. Everyone should choose a mover and put it on the GO space.
6. Now, decide who will be the Banker.

The Banker’s Role:

If you’re the Banker, you have some important responsibilities. You’ll be in charge of handling the money, District cards, buildings, and auctions. Before we start playing, make sure to:

• Sort the District cards by color groups and place them nicely in the slots of the plastic tray.
• Organize the buildings by color groups and keep them to the side of the gameboard.

How to Play the Game

Decide How Long You Want to Play

• You can play until everyone except one player goes bankrupt. This usually takes around 2 hours, depending on the number of players. OR
• You can set a specific time limit, such as one or two hours. The Trading unit will let you know when an hour has passed.

A. Roll the Dice

Roll the dice and move your game piece the number of spaces indicated.

B. See Where You’ve Landed

C. Build Properties (If You Want)

Game Over

• After playing for almost an hour, the Trading unit will beep more frequently. To keep playing, simply switch the unit off and on again to start another hour.
• Add up the total value of your money and properties (see page 16). The player with the most money and valuable properties is the winner!

Where Did You Land?

An unowned district:

If you come across an unowned district, you have a couple of options. You can either buy it for the specified price and get the corresponding district card, or you can choose to auction it off. If you decide not to buy it, you must auction it.

A district owned by another player:

When you land on a district that is owned by another player, you don’t have much choice. You must pay the rent specified on the district card to the owner of the district.

A district you own:

If you own a district and someone else lands on it, they will have to pay you the rent specified on the district card.

An auction space:

When you land on an auction space, you can choose to either bid on a district that is being auctioned off or pass on the opportunity and let someone else bid on it.

An industry tax space:

If you land on an industry tax space, you have to pay the amount shown on the space as an industry tax.

A planning permission space:

When you land on a planning permission space, you have the opportunity to get a planning permission card. You can buy it for the amount shown on the space or choose not to buy it.

Free Parking:

Landing on the Free Parking space doesn’t have any particular consequences. You can just take a break and enjoy your time without having to pay or do anything.

A ? space:

If you land on a ? space, you have to follow the instructions specified on the tile. It could be anything from paying money to another player to taking a chance card.

Go to jail:

If you land on the Go to Jail space, you have to go straight to jail. You’ll have to wait in jail for a couple of turns or find a way to get out early.

How To Auction

Auctions provide a fun way to buy and sell districts. When a district is put up for auction, each player has the chance to make a bid. The bidding starts at a certain price, usually the price listed on the space. From there, players take turns increasing the bid until no one is willing to go higher. The highest bidder wins the district and pays the amount of their final bid. Auctions can be intense and exciting, so make sure you come prepared with enough money to secure the districts you want!

• When I want to start an auction, I simply press the Auction button on the Trading Unit. The timer starts and the auction will last up to 50 seconds.
• To begin the bidding, I can start with any value from M1 Ok and up.
• At any time during the auction, any player, including the one who started it, can call out a higher offer.
• When I hear a sound and the red light starts flashing faster, I know there are only 5 seconds left to close the auction!
• The player with the highest bid when the red light turns off wins the district and must pay that price to the banker.

How To Build

• If I want to build, all I have to do is press the Build button on the Trading Unit.
• When the unit stops, look at the number on the display. That number tells you the maximum number of blocks you can use on this turn. For example, if it shows 3, you can build up to 3 blocks. If the unit stops on , you can build a railroad but no properties.
• You can buy residential buildings, industrial buildings, or a combination of both from the bank. The price for each building is listed on your District card(s).
• You can build properties on any districts that you own. In fact, you can build on multiple districts in the same turn. Just remember, you can only press the Build button once per turn.

If another player constructs a hazard in your district, the residential blocks in that area lose their value and do not contribute to the rent value. To get rid of hazards in my district, I can pay the bank M500k for each block during my turn.

For example, if I want to remove a prison that takes up 4 blocks, I need to pay M2m (4 x M500k) to the bank. Then I give the prison back to the banker. After that, I can start charging rent for the houses in that district again.

Now, let me explain how charging rent works.

When another player lands on one of my districts, I need to consider the following to determine how much they owe me:

If you can’t afford to pay rent, you can mortgage one or more districts that you own to raise some money.

To Mortgage a District

To mortgage a district, you need to determine its value. The value is the same as the district’s current rent value. Once you have the value, turn the District card facedown and place it in front of you. Collect the determined amount from the banker. Importantly, all buildings on the district should remain in place.

Keep in mind that while a district is mortgaged, you cannot collect any rent from it.

To buy back a mortgaged district later in the game

If you want to reclaim a mortgaged district, turn the District card over and pay the original rent value to the banker. This amount will be the same as what you received when you initially mortgaged the district.

Once you’ve bought back the district, you can immediately start charging rent again and continue to build on it.

Bankruptcy

If you find yourself owing more money than the total value of your assets, you’ll face bankruptcy and will be eliminated from the game.

Owing the banker

If you have any District cards, give them back to the banker. They’ll auction off each property to the person who offers the most money. As for your “Get out of jail free” cards, just put them at the bottom of the pile they came from.

When you owe money to another player

The player you owe will take any money you have left, as well as your District cards and “Get out of jail free” cards.

What happens when you land on Free Parking?

Luckily, there’s no punishment if you land on Free Parking. You can still collect rent and even improve your properties while you’re there!

Rent Dodge Card: A Game-Changing Advantage

• So, here’s how it works: whenever you happen to land on the FREE PARKING spot, grab that Rent Dodge card waiting for you by the board.

Jail: A Bit of Unfortunate Detention

If you land on one of these spots, you’ll go to jail:

• If you land on the “Go to jail” space.
• If you draw a Chance card that tells you to “Go directly to jail”.
• If you roll doubles three times in a row on your turn.

Your turn ends when you go to jail. When you pass GO, you don’t collect any money.

While you’re in jail, you can still collect rent and build properties on districts, as long as they’re not mortgaged.

You can get out of jail by:

• Paying a $500,000 fine and continuing on your next turn.
• Using a “Get out of jail free” card.
• Rolling a double.

If you haven’t rolled a double after three turns, you need to pay the banker $500,000 and then move according to what you rolled.

How to win the game

At the end of the game, calculate your total worth using these steps:
