Now, before embarking on your first full game of Mesozooic, it is recommended to play a single learning round. This will allow you to become familiar with the game mechanics and rules.

Take note of the orange sidebars, as they provide specific rules solely for the learning round. Disregard these rules for future games once you have grasped the basics.

To begin the learning round setup, follow these steps:

1. Place the sand timer and scorepad in the center of the table.

2. Each player should take a reference card.

In Mesozooic, the game of creating dinosaur zoos, I quickly slide cards within a grid to arrange them and score points. The game is divided into three rounds: choose, build, and score. But for the learning round, I’ll skip the choose step and start with the build step, using only the cards from my director’s set.

To set up the game, each player takes a double-sided di card and sets aside their director cards. We then gather everyone’s basic cards and shuffle them together with the neutral cards to create a facedown deck. Any remaining cards go back in the box.

Now, let’s get into the gameplay!

When we start a new round of the game, we get to decide what we want our zoos to look like. Each player gets 11 cards from the deck, and we keep the rest for later.

Next, we all pick the cards we want to use for our zoos. We each choose two cards to keep and put them face down in front of us. These cards are a secret, but we can look at them anytime during this step.

After choosing our cards, we pass the rest to the next player. We keep repeating this process, choosing two cards and passing the rest, until we have 11 cards in total. The last card we get to keep for ourselves.

For the first round, we pass the cards to the player on our right. In the second round, we pass them to the player on our left. And in the third round, we pass them to the player on our right again.

Now it’s time to build our zoos!

Alright, let’s get started! Grab your deck of cards and let’s play Mesozooic. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Shuffle your cards.
2. Take one card at a time and randomly place them faceup in a 4×3 grid.
3. Start from the top row, going from left to right, and proceed down.

For now, leave the bottom-right space of your zoo empty. This space will move around as you build your zoo. After you finish building, you’ll place your director card in that space.

Make sure all your cards are upright and leave some space between them.

Example Zoo Before Sliding

Alright, it’s game time! You and your opponents have 45 seconds to build your zoos. Slide the cards around to line up features and score points.

Hey there! Before we get started, let’s take a look at our cards and plan our zoos. When we’re all ready, I’ll count down: “3, 2, 1, GO!” Then we’ll flip the sand timer and start sliding our cards.

Sliding Cards

Your zoo cards move just like the tiles in a sliding puzzle. You’ll use only one hand to slide one card at a time into the empty space in your zoo, creating a new empty space. This way, you can rearrange the features in your zoo.

You have the freedom to slide any of these cards into the empty space.

During the time limit, you can slide cards as quickly and as many times as you like. Just remember, you can’t rotate the cards or slide them outside of your zoo.

Once the sand timer runs out, you must immediately stop sliding cards. Time to put those cards down!

Scoring

Put your director card in the open slot of your zoo. Then you earn points based on how well you organized and combined the features in your zoo. Write down the scores for the round on the scorepad.

Each zoo feature earns points differently, as explained below. Some cards may have multiple features, each scoring separately. The front of the reference cards has reminders of how each feature is scored.

The artwork for certain features differs from card to card, but these visual differences don’t affect how the features are scored. For example, the dinosaur types don’t need to match within a completed enclosure, and the three types of attractions score the same way regardless of how they look.

Enclosures

Let me explain to you how the scoring works in the game. You will earn 6 points for each herbivore enclosure that you complete in a horizontal line. If you complete a carnivore enclosure in a vertical line, you will also earn 6 points. Now, pay attention to the attractions. For each attraction, you will earn 2 points for each maintenance truck that is next to it. But remember, the trucks must be next to the attractions in a straight line, not diagonally. And don’t worry, your director already has a maintenance truck. So, make sure to place your enclosures strategically and position the trucks wisely to maximize your score!

End of the Learning Round

Now that I’ve completed the learning round, I’m ready to play a full three-round game. I’ll set up the game using the standard rules, just like before.

Once I finish scoring, there are two options. If I want to continue playing, I can prepare the deck for the next round. If it’s the third round, then the game is over (more on that below).

Preparing for the next round is simple. I’ll set aside my director card like I did before. Then, I’ll gather all the cards from my zoo and shuffle them together with the deck to create a brand new deck. With that done, I can start the next round.

End of the Game

After all three rounds are completed and the scores are tallied, the game comes to an end. To determine my total score, I will drop my lowest score and add up the two remaining scores. The player with the highest total wins the game!

If there’s a tie, we compare the dropped scores of the tied players. The one with the highest dropped score wins. But if there’s still a tie, then those players share the victory.

Adjusting the Difficulty

When you’re playing with less experienced players, you can choose to follow some restrictions to make it fair for everyone:

• When you’re building, use your non-dominant hand to slide cards. So if you’re right-handed, use your left hand, and vice versa.
• Before you start sliding the cards, count down aloud from five when the sand timer is flipped during the build step.
• Instead of dropping your lowest score at the end of the game, drop your highest score.

For Young Players

If you’re playing with young kids, you can simplify the game using these suggestions:
