Mastermind Game Rules
Mastermind is a classic game that challenges your logic and deduction skills. It’s a game where you have to guess a secret code, and it’s not as easy as it sounds. The code consists of a series of colored pegs, and your job is to figure out both the colors and their correct positions.
To play the game, I will provide you with a code made up of different colored pegs. Your task is to crack the code by guessing the correct combination. The code can vary in length, usually between 4 and 6 pegs. The colors that can be used in the code are typically chosen from a set of options, such as red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and purple.
Once you’ve made your guess, I will give you feedback in the form of clues. These clues will help you figure out if any of the pegs you guessed are the correct color and in the right position. The clues consist of two types: black pegs and white pegs.
A black peg means that you have correctly guessed a peg’s color and position. It tells you that you’ve got a peg in the right spot. A white peg means that you’ve guessed a peg’s color correctly but it’s not in the right position.
The clues are given in a specific order. First, all the black pegs are given, followed by the white pegs. The order of the clues does not correspond to the order of the pegs in your guess. It’s up to you to use deductive reasoning to figure out which pegs are in the right position and which ones are just the right color.
You’ll keep making guesses and receiving feedback, adjusting your strategy as you gather more information. Keep in mind that the number of guesses you have is limited, so you’ll need to be strategic and make the most of each guess.
The game continues until you either crack the code by guessing it correctly or you run out of guesses. If you crack the code, congratulations! You’ve won the game. If you run out of guesses, don’t worry, you can always try again.
Mastermind is a challenging game that requires both logical thinking and a bit of luck. It’s a game of deduction, where you use the clues to narrow down the possibilities and make educated guesses. So, are you up for the challenge? Give it a try and see if you can crack the code!

When it comes to playing a game where you have to outsmart your opponent, there’s nothing quite like using a clever code or relying on your keen guesswork. Both options can be a double-edged sword, providing an exciting challenge while also testing your abilities. And if you enjoy those kinds of challenges, you’re going to love the game of Codebreaker.
In this game, there are two roles to choose from: the Codemaker and the Decoder. Let’s take a closer look at what each role entails.
The Codemaker
If you decide to take on the role of the Codemaker, your main objective is to craft a mystery code that is so clever and intricate that your opponent will struggle to figure it out. You want to create a code that requires your opponent to make as many guesses as possible, keeping them stumped for as long as you can. It’s a game of wits and strategy on your part, as you try to stay one step ahead of your opponent.
The Decoder
If you prefer the challenge of breaking codes rather than creating them, then the role of the Decoder is perfect for you. Your goal is to solve the secret code in as few guesses as possible. You’ll need to use your deductive reasoning skills and powers of observation to analyze the clues provided and make educated guesses. The pressure is on, as you try to crack the code before your opponent can outmaneuver you.
Codebreaker is a game that combines strategy, logic, and a bit of luck. It’s a battle of wits between the Codemaker and the Decoder, with each player trying to outsmart the other. Whether you choose to create a cunning code or break a challenging one, Codebreaker is a game that will test your mental prowess and keep you entertained for hours on end.

Getting Started
To get started with the game, follow these simple steps:
- Pour out all the pegs onto the peg tray and throw away the bag.
- Make sure that the indicator arms, which are red and white, are tucked in.
Before we start playing the game, let’s decide on the number of games that we want to play. It should be an even number.
Playing the Game

- First, I need to figure out who will be the Codemaker. That means one person will have the important job of setting the secret code. To do this, they will lift the Secrecy screen and put four Code pegs in the holes below. Remember, the Decoder should not be able to see the code!
- The code can be made up of any combination of the colored pegs. Just remember, you can’t use two or more pegs of the same color.
- Once the code is set, I can start guessing. My task is to try and guess the exact colors and positions of the hidden Code pegs.
- For each guess, I’ll place a row of Code pegs on the unit. It’s important to keep each row of pegs in position throughout the game.
- After each guess, the Codemaker will let me know how I’m doing. They will use the sliding indicator arms on the sides of the unit to give me feedback.
Red Indicator Arms
When you want to show how many pegs are the correct colors in the correct positions, simply pull out the red arm that corresponds to that number. This arm will give you a clear indication.
White Indicator Arms
If you need to display the number of pegs that have the correct colors but are in incorrect positions, you can easily do so by pulling out the corresponding white arm. This arm will show you the exact count.

Example: Imagine you have two pegs in a guessing game that are the right colors but in the wrong positions. To indicate this, I pull the WHITE slider two spaces. Now, let’s say you have one peg that is not only the right color but also in the right position. In this case, I pull out the red slider just one space.
When you’re the Decoder, your goal is to break the secret code. If you successfully crack the code, I will reveal it by turning the unit around and pulling out the red indicator arm next to the correct combination. The number displayed will be 4, representing the number of attempts it took you to solve the code. Once the game is over, we tally the scores and switch roles.
Now, let’s talk about the end of the game. As the Codemaker, I score one point for each line of Code pegs you place as the Decoder. However, if you’re unable to crack the code within nine attempts, the game is over, and I score nine points. It’s a challenging game that requires skill, strategy, and a little bit of luck. Are you ready to give it a try?
Hey, let’s talk about how to keep score when playing a game! It’s super simple, and I’m excited to show you how it’s done.
After each game, make sure to jot down your score. It’s important to keep track of who’s winning! Oh, and speaking of winners, players switch roles at the end of each game. So, everyone gets a chance to be on top!
Once you’ve finished playing all the games you agreed on, it’s time to add up the scores. This is where things get interesting. The player with the highest score is the big winner! Woohoo!
Now, let’s talk about what happens if someone makes a little mistake. We all do sometimes, right?
If the Codemaker slips up when giving the Decoder some information, no worries! Just start a new game and give the Decoder three extra points. That’s a nice little bonus, don’t you think?
