How to play Macroscope Official Rules

Welcome to the Macroscope Game!

Hi there! I’m excited to introduce you to the world of the Macroscope Game. It’s a fun and challenging game that will put your observation skills to the test. So, let’s dive right in!

First things first, let me explain the rules of the game. The objective is to guess the hidden picture by revealing small portions of it. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

Here’s how it works. You’ll see a grid with squares that hide fragments of the picture. Your job is to uncover these squares to gradually reveal more of the image. Pretty cool, right?

Now, I bet you’re wondering how to go about revealing those squares. Well, it’s simple! You’ll have a limited number of “probes” that you can use to check any square you want. Each time you use a probe, the square will display a small portion of the picture hidden beneath it. Fascinating, isn’t it?

But wait, there’s a catch. You need to be careful about how many times you use a probe because every time you do, points will be deducted. So, use your probes wisely, my friend!

As you reveal more squares and get closer to uncovering the hidden picture, you might want to take a guess. If you’re confident about your answer, you can submit it, and if you’re correct, you’ll earn extra points! Now that’s something to strive for.

Remember, though, making too many wrong guesses can result in a penalty. So, think carefully before you take that leap of faith!

Well, that’s all there is to it! Now that you know the rules of the Macroscope Game, it’s time to put your observation skills to the test. Are you ready? Let’s go and reveal some fantastic pictures! Enjoy!

Let’s have some fun and play a game! We can use a special device called the Macroscope. It’s like rolling the dice to see what surprises are waiting for us. With the Macroscope, we can open different windows and take a peek at the picture inside.

The challenge is to guess the picture on the card using as few window openings as possible. The more accurate our guess is, the more points we’ll win. But be careful, because if we guess wrong, we’ll lose points instead.

What’s Inside?

Welcome to the World of the Macroscope!

Let’s get started by setting up your Macroscope. First, take out all the pieces and tokens from their cardboard packaging. You’ll find the game round tracker and the marker among them. Now, it’s time to put it all together!

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Begin by carefully assembling the Macroscope using the parts according to the picture below.

That’s it! Your Macroscope is now ready to be explored. Get ready for an exciting journey filled with mysteries and discoveries!

Tokens

Let’s use these cool stickers to put together our tokens. Look at the picture on the right. Stick a rectangular piece with an “x” on it to the special area on each of the round tokens. Make sure you stick it on the right side, so the number can still be seen.

The Marker

Now let’s put together the marker. Take a look at the picture below to see how it’s done.

Getting Started with the Macroscope Game

To set up the Macroscope game, follow these easy steps:

  1. Put the Macroscope in the middle of the table.
  2. Take the deck of picture cards and put it into the Macroscope. Make sure the pizza card is on top, but don’t peek at the other cards!
  3. Cover the deck with the perforated lid that comes with the Macroscope.
  4. Make sure the end with the black arrow is showing. The arrow tells you how the picture on the card should be oriented.
  5. Randomly place a token in each of the round windows on the Macroscope.
  6. Carefully take off the top card from the Macroscope without turning it over or pulling out any other cards, and put it in the small compartment of the game box.

  • I’m going to show you how to set up and play the game Macroscope. Are you ready?
  • First, take the game round tracker and put it next to the Macroscope.
  • Now, put the marker on the first space of the game round tracker.
  • The next step is to place the dice in the center of the table.
  • And here’s an important part – each player starts with 2 yellow crystals. The rest of the crystals should be put in a reserve that’s easy for everyone to reach. Got it?

Now, Let’s Play!

Alright, let’s get started! First, we need to randomly choose who goes first. We’ll keep the order going clockwise.

Remember, the Macroscope has to be visible to everyone at all times!

When it’s your turn:

Make sure you have a good view of the Macroscope by turning it towards yourself. Just make sure the arrow on the card is pointing away from you.

  1. Now it’s time to roll both dice. For each number that comes up on the dice, you get to remove a token with that same number from the Macroscope. If there are no more tokens with that number, don’t worry, you can still remove any token you want for each unmatched die. Here’s a tip: You can even play without the dice by just removing one or two tokens of your choice. Once you’ve taken out one token, you can decide whether to remove another or take a guess at the picture. If you decide to remove a second token, you can then choose to either guess the picture or pass the turn to the next player.

If you want to take a guess at the picture, check out MAKING A GUESS. If you’re not ready to guess yet, you can take a yellow crystal from the reserve for each window you’ve opened on the Macroscope and place them in front of you. If no one wants to guess, it’s the next player’s turn.

During another player’s turn, you can make a guess if they don’t want to. You can also challenge another player’s guess (see MAKING A GUESS).

Remember, everyone can look into the windows of the Macroscope at any time. Just be careful not to lose any tokens when passing it to another player.

Imagine this: I start the game by rolling the dice. I get a “2” and a “5”. I look at the tokens on the left and right side and remove the token with the number “2”. No one is ready to guess yet. I decide to open another window and remove the token with the number “5”. Still, no one is ready to guess. Instead, I get 2 yellow crystals as a reward. Then, I pass the dice to the player on my left.

Taking a Guess

If you want to guess what’s depicted on the card, you have to announce it to everyone and say it out loud. Be bold!

If someone else has a different guess, they can challenge your guess. The player with the fewest points goes first if multiple people want to challenge. If there’s a tie, the active player gets to decide who challenges first.

When it’s your turn to challenge another player’s guess, you’ll need to give them 2 yellow crystals and make a guess out loud about what you think is on the card. Just remember, you can’t say the same guess that someone else has already made. If the person whose turn it is refuses to make a guess, you’ll follow these same steps. But here’s the catch – if you don’t have 2 yellow crystals, you won’t be able to make a guess while it’s someone else’s turn.

Now let’s talk about victory points. Count up how many windows of the Macroscope are still covered with tokens. This will determine the number of victory points you’ll either gain (if your guess was right) or lose (if your guess was wrong).

To make sure no one accidentally sees the next picture card, we’ll randomly cover all the windows of the Macroscope with tokens. Then, without flipping it over, take the top card from the deck and look at the picture.

So here’s the deal. If you’re the one who figures out what the picture in the Macroscope is, you’re gonna rake in some serious victory points. How many, you ask? Well, just as many as there are windows covered in the Macroscope when you make your guess. And those points, my friend, come straight from the reserve. You snatch ’em up.

Now, here’s the kicker. If you don’t manage to guess the picture, tough luck. You’re gonna lose the exact same number of victory points that you would’ve gained if you had succeeded. Yep, they go right back to the reserve. Ain’t that a bummer?

But don’t worry, there’s a silver lining. If you happen to have zero victory points, well, guess what? You don’t lose a thing! You gotta hit rock bottom before you can start losing, right?

Oh, and there’s one more thing. If you somehow end up with fewer crystals than you’re supposed to give up, no worries. You just throw all the crystals you have left back into the reserve. It’s like you’re starting over, fresh as a daisy. No harm done.

Example: Picture this: I’m playing a game called Macroscope. I roll the dice, and as luck would have it, I remove just one token. My mind starts racing, and I blurt out my guess, “I think it’s a pie!” Meanwhile, Simon, always quick on his feet, has his own hunch. He slides over two yellow crystals, saying confidently, “I think it’s a pizza!”

With excitement building, we cover nine windows of the Macroscope with tokens, hiding the mysterious image beneath. Anticipation fills the air as we reach for the top card of the deck, ready to reveal the truth.

And there it is, unmistakably clear: a pizza. Simon nailed it! He triumphantly claims nine yellow crystals from the reserve. As for me, well, I missed the mark. My guess was way off, and I owe nine yellow crystals back to the reserve. I don’t have enough, so I graciously hand over my remaining four crystals.

Once you’ve finished scoring the round, carefully put the played card into the small compartment of the game box without peeking at its back.

Next, move the marker on the game round tracker one space forward. Then, pass the turn to the next player in a clockwise direction. Keep playing by following the same rules.

If all the windows in the Macroscope are opened before anyone guesses the picture, cover the windows with the tokens again. Take out the card and place it back in the game box. Start a new round without moving the marker on the game round tracker.

End of the Game

When the marker reaches 10 on the game round tracker, play one final round. The player who has the most victory points after ten rounds becomes the winner!

Game Variant

Hey there! Wanna make the game a bit easier? I’ve got some cool tweaks to the basic rules, check ’em out:

  1. You won’t get 2 yellow crystals each before the game starts, just to switch things up a bit.
  2. During your turn, you can open one or two windows of the Macroscope (just like in the basic rules). And here’s the twist: you get to decide if you want to take a guess at the picture or not. Oh, and remember, you can’t guess during another player’s turn.
    • If you decide not to guess the picture, you’ll get 2 yellow crystals, regardless of how many tokens you took from the Macroscope.
    • If you decide not to guess, any other player can take a shot at it without having to pay you.

If a few people want to guess the pictures, they can do it for free. The player who rolled the dice last gets to decide who goes first. Just remember, you can’t make a guess that has already been made!

Now let’s talk about how to store and refresh the deck. The game box has two compartments. The small compartment is where you keep the cards you’ve already played, with the played side facing up. The big compartment is where you keep the assembled Macroscope and all the cards that haven’t been played yet.

The first card in the deck has a pizza on one side and the Macroscope logo on the other. This card is placed at the beginning to hide the pictures in the deck until you start playing.

Hey there! So, when all the cards in the Macroscope are gone, here’s what you do: grab the deck of cards from the box that were previously discarded, flip it over, and slide it back into the Macroscope, just like when you were setting up the game. Make sure to cover the cards with the perforated lid of the Macroscope.

Next, you need to put a token in each of the round windows on the Macroscope. Be careful not to turn it over or accidentally remove any other cards while you do this. Once that’s done, take the top card from the deck in the Macroscope and put it back in the box. And voila, you’re good to go and can continue playing the game!
