Hey there! Are you excited to embark on a journey into the mysterious world of Lovecraft Letter? Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’m here to guide you through the game rules and help you understand how to play this thrilling adventure.
Components
Let’s start by taking a look at what’s inside the box. When you open Lovecraft Letter, you’ll find:
- 25 game cards
- 6 reference cards
- 18 sleeves
- 1 Rulebook
Game Objective
The goal of Lovecraft Letter is to be the last player standing, avoiding insanity and other unspeakable horrors that lurk in the shadows.
Game Setup
Setting up the game is as easy as pie. First, each player receives a reference card and a matching colored wooden sanity token. Shuffle the game cards and deal one to each player. Now, you’re ready to dive into the madness!
Gameplay
The gameplay in Lovecraft Letter involves a series of rounds. On your turn, you must perform two actions: draw a card, resolve its effect, and play a card from your hand. The card you play will determine the outcome of the round.
You can play action cards to manipulate the game, eliminate your opponents, or protect your sanity. But be careful! Some cards, like the mysterious Necronomicon, have a hidden power that can turn the tide of the game.
Remember, each round ends with a challenge. You must choose a player to challenge, and they will either reveal a Cthulhu card and be eliminated or discard a card to stay in the game. The tension rises as the players dwindle and the horrors of the Lovecraftian world grow stronger.
Winning the Game
The game continues until only one player remains sane. If you manage to keep your sanity intact, congratulations! You’re the winner of Lovecraft Letter.
So, are you ready to step into the mysterious and eerie world of Lovecraft Letter? Grab your wooden sanity token, shuffle those cards, and brace yourself for an unforgettable experience. Good luck!

Back in the 1920s, the whole world was still recovering from the chaos caused by the First World War.
Amidst all this chaos, one of your family members has had a truly puzzling encounter in Egypt. They witnessed strange shadows coming to life, and received cryptic letters filled with incomprehensible text and mysterious symbols.
When you arrive in Egypt, you discover that your relative is missing. Determined to unravel the truth, you decide to take matters into your own hands and embark on an investigation. Little did you know, this journey would lead you to face unimaginable horror.
Your Mission
In Lovecraft Letter, you step into the shoes of someone who has come to Egypt to help their cousin, only to find that they have disappeared. As you dig deeper, you stumble upon a trail of clues that seem to have been left specifically for you to uncover. But be cautious! Some of these clues conceal forbidden secrets, while others are guarded by supernatural entities that pose a threat to your very existence.
When you play the game, you’ll have a secret card that holds a clue you’ve chosen to follow. But here’s the thing: some clues are more dangerous than others, and they could end up getting you eliminated instead of your competition.
At the end of the round, the player with the highest value card in their hand has found the most useful clue in the search for your cousin!
Lovecraft Letter is different from other games that use the Love Letter engine because it introduces the Insanity mechanic, which adds a new dimension to the game. The Insane effects in this game are incredibly powerful, but they also come with a high risk. They can make it more difficult for you to win the game.
I recommend using these effects wisely and paying attention to how others are trying to win. Sometimes taking a risky approach will be the best way to go. Other times, playing it safe may be the easiest path to victory.
When I play games, I love that feeling of triumph, that moment when I deliver a game-changing blow that seals my victory. Sometimes, all it takes is one powerful move to knock my opponents out of the game, leaving me as the last player standing.

Game Cards
In Lovecraft Letter, there are a total of 25 game cards. Some cards have only a Sane effect, while others have both a Sane effect and an Insane effect, which we call “Insanity cards”.
1 Name: The name of the card.
2 Number: Each card has a number, which determines the winner at the end of the game.
3 Card Count: How many copies of the card are in the game. This number also indicates whether the card can be used for its Sane effect or its Insane effect, if possible (see Insanity, page 7).
4 Art: A visual representation of the card.
Hey there! Let’s talk about card effects, shall we? Every card has something special it does that can really shake up a game. You know what’s interesting? Insanity cards have not one, but two effects! They’ve got a Sane effect and an Insane effect. It’s like two sides of the same coin!
Cheat Sheets
These cards show a handy summary of all the cards in the game, including their effects and how many of each card is in the deck. They don’t actually get used during the game, but they’re a helpful reference for players to remember everything. One side of each cheat sheet has a list of the normal effects of the cards, while the other side has a list of the crazy effects.

Sanity Tokens
Hey there! Have you heard of sanity tokens? They’re these cool poker chips that have two sides. They come in super handy when you want to keep track of your victories while playing the game. One side represents your sanity, and the other side represents your insanity. How awesome is that? It’s like having a little piece of your mind right in front of you!
Setup
Okay, let’s get started with the setup. First things first, take the Mi-Go Braincase card and place it face up. Now, take the remaining 24 cards and shuffle them up to form a deck. Exciting, right?
Next, we’re going to do something a little mysterious. Take the top card of the deck and set it aside without looking at it. Keep it face down, just to add a little suspense to the game. If you’re playing with two players, go ahead and remove another 5 cards from the top of the deck and set them aside, face up. These extra cards won’t be used in this round, but they might give you some clues about what your opponents are up to. Sneaky, huh?
Now it’s time to draw some cards! Each player should draw 1 card from the top of the deck. This will be your hand for the game, so keep it a secret from the other players (unless a card effect asks you to spill the beans). Let the games begin!
Hey there! Let’s talk about how to start playing Lovecraft Letter. First things first, we need to figure out who goes first. You can choose any method you like to determine the starting player.
How to Play
Lovecraft Letter is a game that is played in multiple rounds. After each round, we’ll determine a winner based on the clue card they have in their hand (which has a number), as well as their mental state (either Sane or Insane). To win the game, you’ll need to win a certain number of rounds with a certain mental state.

My Turn to Play
When it’s my turn, I get to draw the top card from the deck and add it to my hand. Then, I have a choice: I can pick one of the two cards in my hand and discard it face up in front of me. After I discard it, the card’s effects apply, whether they’re good or bad for me.
If I have any questions about how a card’s effects work in special cases, I can find the answers in the rule book. The discarded cards stay in front of me, forming a discard pile. It’s important to stack them neatly so we can see the order they were discarded. This way, we can try to guess what cards other players might still have in their hands.
Once I’m done applying the card’s effect and it’s in my discard pile, it’s time for the player on my left to take their turn.
Getting Rid of Cards
When you play the game, there are certain times when you will need to get rid of a card. This is called discarding. To discard, simply take a card from your hand and put it face up in your discard pile.
Usually, when you discard a card, you have to follow the instructions on the card and apply its effect, even if it’s not beneficial for you. There are some exceptions though. If you have to choose another player for an effect, but that player can’t be chosen due to another card’s effect, then your card is discarded without any effect.
The term “hand” refers to the cards that you are currently holding in your hand. It’s just a shorter way of saying “the cards in your hand.”

Insanity
If I ever have an Insanity card in my discard pile (no matter how it got there), it means I’ve come across forbidden knowledge and now I’m Insane. But remember, a card only goes into the discard pile after I’ve used its effects!
As an Insane player, I have a choice when playing an Insanity card in the future. I can either use the Insane effect or the Sane effect. I can’t use both, though—I have to pick one.
There’s another thing. At any moment, I may break down mentally. Before I add a new card to my hand on each of my future turns, I must first make a Sanity Check.
When I do a Sanity Check, I reveal cards from the top of my deck one by one. I reveal as many cards as I have Insanity cards in my discard pile. If, at any point, I reveal an Insanity card, I’m immediately knocked out of the round. However, if I manage to pass the Sanity Check, all the cards that were revealed are discarded without applying their effect.
But what if I can’t do a Sanity Check? Well, if there are no more cards left in the deck, the round ends right away.
Now, Out Of The Round
If I get knocked out of the round, whether it’s because of a card effect or a failed Sanity Check, I have to discard my hand. None of the cards in my hand have any effect anymore. And that’s not all – I don’t get to take any more turns until the next round. Plus, other players can’t choose me for their card effects either.

The End of a Round
When I’m playing a game, a round comes to a close when there are no more cards left in the deck by the time it’s my turn. This means that we’ve used up all the cards, and it’s time to see who’s come out on top.
Once the deck is empty, everyone reveals their hands. If there are multiple players who have the same number in their hand, they’re out of the round. It’s a real game of luck here – who can get the highest number in their hand?
But that’s not the only way for a round to end. If all the other players have been knocked out and only one person remains standing, that player becomes the winner. It just goes to show that sometimes being the last one standing can be a real advantage.
After the round is over, it’s important to take a moment to check on the winner’s state of mind. We want to see if they’re feeling a bit crazy – they might be considered Insane if there’s an Insanity card in their discard pile. However, if their discard pile is free of any Insanity cards, then they’re considered Sane. It’s interesting how a deck of cards can reveal so much about a person’s mental state.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Take a Sanity token and put it with the face that matches your state of mind –
if you’re Sane or
if you’re Insane. - Start a new round following all the setup rules, with the previous round’s winner going first.
The Game Ends
You win the game if any of the following conditions are met:
- You have 2
Sanity tokens face up. - You have 3
Sanity tokens face up. - You won the previous round because of Cthulhu’s Insane effect.
Cheating can be a real problem when playing games, and it’s important to understand why it’s not a good idea. Let’s take a look at the concept of honesty and why it matters in game playing.
Honesty
When you play a game, honesty means playing fair and not cheating. Cheating can take many forms, such as lying or not following the rules. For example, if someone asks you a question and you lie in response, that’s not being honest. Another way people cheat is by not getting rid of a card when they should. For instance, if you have a card with a number higher than 4 and you’re supposed to discard a card called The Silver Key, but you don’t, that’s cheating.
To have a good time playing games, it’s important to play with honest people who follow the rules. Cheating takes away the fun and fairness of the game, and it’s not fair to others who are playing by the rules. So, remember to always play fair and be honest when you play games!
