Objective

The objective of Hive Venom is to strategically place your pieces on the board and encircle the opponent’s Queen Bee while safeguarding your own. The player who successfully accomplishes this wins the game!

Setup

The game begins with an empty board. Each player is given a set of hexagonal tiles, including a Queen Bee, 2 Spiders, 3 Beetles, 3 Grasshoppers, and 3 Soldier Ants. These tiles represent the different pieces in the game.

Players take turns placing their pieces on the board, with the Queen Bee placed first. Pieces can be placed adjacent to their own pieces or the opponent’s pieces, but must always maintain connection.

Gameplay

Once the setup is complete, the players take turns moving their pieces. Each piece has its unique movement rules:

• Queen Bee: Moves one space in any direction.
• Spider: Moves three spaces around the edge of the hive.
• Beetle: Moves one space on top of the hive or climbs down.
• Grasshopper: Jumps over adjacent pieces in a straight line.
• Soldier Ant: Moves any number of spaces around the edge of the hive.

When a player places their final piece, the game enters the second phase called “The Hive Starts Crawling.” Now, instead of placing new pieces, players move existing ones to create new connections and encircle the opponent’s Queen Bee.

End Game

The game can end in two ways:

1. Surround the opponent’s Queen Bee with your own pieces on all six sides.
2. Create a pathway around the opponent’s Queen Bee using your pieces, effectively blocking it in.

When one of these conditions is met, that player wins the game!

Getting Started

To set up the game, each player takes all 14 pieces of one color and places them in front of them, any side up. The pieces are ready for action.

How to Play

The Hive: Venom pieces are identical to the original Hive pieces, with one small twist. Each piece has a Hive: Venom design on the reverse side.

The rules for playing Hive: Venom are the same as the original Hive, with one additional option. You can choose to either place, move, or flip a piece on your turn. It’s all up to you. Except for the Queen Bee – that piece must always be placed face up.

Remember, you can only move or flip a piece once the Queen has been placed on the board. So, use your strategic thinking to make the right moves at the right time.

The game ends when one player successfully surrounds their opponent’s Queen Bee or Queen Wasp. That’s the moment of sweet victory.

When it comes to flipping in the game, you have the ability to flip a piece even if it cannot move. However, you are not allowed to flip a piece if it is under a stack or if your opponent moved it on their previous turn.

If you are new to the game and want to gain some experience with the new reverse side creatures and the flipping mechanism, we recommend playing without the Mosquito, Ladybug, or Pillbug expansions.

Alternatively, you can choose to add any number of the venom pieces to the original Hive game as additional expansion creatures.

The Venom Creatures

Queen Wasp

The Wasp is a unique insect in the Hive. It has the ability to move around by shifting one space at a time. However, it also possesses a special power that sets it apart from other creatures. This power allows the Wasp to sting any enemy piece that is not part of a stack.

When the Wasp stings a piece, something interesting happens. The stung piece is flipped over and rendered immobilized. It loses the ability to move or use its special power for a whole turn. It’s like the sting of the Wasp paralyzes its target temporarily.

It’s important to note that the Wasp can only sting a piece that hasn’t just been moved or flipped by your opponent. There needs to be a moment of vulnerability for the sting to be effective. This restriction adds an extra layer of strategy and makes you think carefully about when and how to use the wasp’s stinging ability.

Glowing Insect

When it’s my turn to move, I have the option to make a simple move by going up and then back down on the Hive, each by only one space. But I have a special power called Mind Control that I can use instead.

But remember, I still have to follow all the regular Hive rules when using Mind Control. And there are a couple of limitations: I can’t use the Scorpion or Shieldbug’s special powers with Mind Control.

The Game Ends

The game ends when either the Queen Bee or Wasp is completely surrounded by pieces of any color. If your Queen Bee or Wasp gets surrounded, you lose the game.
