Your Goal in the Game

Hey there! Welcome to the world of fresco painting. Today, I’ll be your guide as we explore the fascinating role of a fresco painter. Let’s dive right in!

Imagine being a talented artist, entrusted with the important task of restoring a breathtaking painting on the cathedral’s majestic ceiling. That’s exactly where we find ourselves in this thrilling game.

As a fresco painter, it’s crucial to plan your workday meticulously. Often, you’ll need to rise bright and early in the morning to purchase and mix paints, preparing for your day of restoration at the cathedral. Your ultimate goal? To bring the faded fresco back to its glorious, immaculate state.

But wait, there’s more! Sometimes, your income may not be enough to sustain your artistic endeavors. When that happens, you’ll have to fulfill orders in your own studio. However, be mindful that this may not sit well with your apprentices, who might become grumpy. Fear not! Their moods can be lifted if you treat them to the evening show at the theater. After all, a little entertainment goes a long way!

Remember, success in this world of fresco painting relies heavily on meticulous planning. The key lies in earning the most victory points, thus securing your position as the most renowned and honored fresco painter.

Playing the Game

We’re going to play a game called Fresco. The game lasts for a number of rounds, and each round has two parts:

  1. Deciding when to wake up and adjusting how we feel
  2. Planning and doing actions

I. Deciding when to wake up and adjusting how we feel

The person who is in last place on the victory point track gets to go first. It’s their turn to play.

I’m a master painter, and today I’ll tell you all about the fascinating game we play. Let’s start with how we decide where to stand! First, I’m taken from my spot above the hostel and placed on a get up space in the left column. Then, all the other painters also choose a spot, starting from second to last place and going to first place. Only one painter can be on each space, so we have to be careful not to overcrowd!

Now, let’s talk about what happens when we choose our get up time. It’s quite interesting! First, it can change our own mood. You see, after picking a time, I get to adjust my mood by moving up or down my column on the mood display in the middle. But there’s a limit – I can’t go beyond the top or bottom space of the column.

Not only that, but the get up time also affects our market price. It’s like a magic number that determines how much buyers are willing to pay for our paintings. So, picking the right time is crucial!

Lastly, the get up time decides the order in which we take actions in the next phase. It’s like a queue – whoever gets up first gets to go first in the next round of the game.

So, as a master painter, my get up time is like my secret weapon. It affects my mood, my market price, and even my position in the game. It’s a lot to consider, but with practice, I’ve learned to use it to my advantage. Now, let’s go create some masterpieces!

When I talk about emotions, I mean the way we feel inside. It’s interesting how our feelings can impact different aspects of our lives. Let’s dive deeper and explore how our emotional state influences some important areas.

1. Our Relationships

Emotions play a significant role in how we connect with others. Have you ever noticed how your mood can affect the way you interact with friends, family, or even strangers? When I’m feeling happy, I tend to be more friendly and sociable. On the other hand, if I’m feeling sad or angry, I might be more withdrawn and less likely to engage in conversations. Our emotions can either enhance our relationships or strain them, depending on how we express and manage them.

2. Our Performance

Believe it or not, our emotions can have a big impact on how well we perform in different tasks and activities. When I’m feeling motivated and confident, I’m more likely to excel at whatever I’m doing. But when I’m feeling anxious or stressed, it can hinder my performance and make it harder for me to concentrate. It’s important to be aware of our emotions and find ways to manage them effectively so that we can perform at our best.

3. Our Physical Well-being

Our emotional state also has an influence on our physical health. When I’m feeling happy and content, I often have more energy and feel physically better overall. But when I’m feeling down or stressed, it can take a toll on my body. I might experience headaches, muscle tension, or even stomachaches. Taking care of our emotional well-being is just as important as taking care of our physical health.

It’s fascinating to think about how our emotions can impact so many different aspects of our lives. By understanding and managing our emotions, we can create a more positive and fulfilling life for ourselves. So next time you’re feeling a certain way, take a moment to pause, reflect, and choose how you want to respond. Remember, you have the power to shape your emotional state and, in turn, your life.

When I’m playing as the master painter, I get a special advantage if I’m on one of the two “+1” spaces. I can take an apprentice from the space above my column. This apprentice gives me one extra action, so I have a total of six actions to use on my action sheet. I get to keep this extra apprentice until I leave the “+1” spaces. When I do leave, I have to return the apprentice to his space above the column.

“-1” Spaces

So, here’s the deal: if you’re a player and your master painter happens to be hanging out in one of those “-1” spots, you’ll have to send one of your own apprentices packing. Don’t worry, though! You can still use them for a total of 4 actions during phase 2. Once you’re ready to move on from those spaces, you can bring your apprentice back and reuse them. Easy peasy!

Pricing matters

So, depending on what time you decide to wake up, the chart on the right will show you how much you’ll need to pay for 1 market tile.

The Order of Players

Once everyone has picked their wake-up time, the order of players is set for this round. The player who chose the earliest wake-up time goes first in phase 2, followed by the other players in the order of their chosen wake-up times, from earliest to latest.

II. Planning and Performing Actions

Planning Actions

Alright, let’s get into it! We’re all players here, and we all want to plan our next moves. But here’s the catch – we have to plan in secret! We each have our own little screen where we can strategize without anyone else knowing.

Taking Action

Once we’ve all made our decisions, it’s time to reveal our plans. We remove our screens and head over to the game board. On the board, there are five different locations where we can take action. Each of us has a sheet with fifteen spots where we can place our apprentices. But here’s the trick: we can only put one apprentice on each spot, so we have to choose wisely.

Now, it’s time to get things moving! We each take turns performing our actions at each location. The order is based on the time we decided to “get up” earlier. The player who is “up” first performs all their actions at a location before the next player takes their turn.

If I didn’t send out any of my apprentices to a specific spot, I wouldn’t get to do anything there. I’d just have to wait my turn.

I’m not obligated to do the actions I picked. I can choose to skip any of them. But if I don’t have enough money or paint pieces for a certain action, I have no choice but to skip it.

Places and things to do:

Market: Buy Paints or Close Down Market Booth

Hey! So, here’s the deal. You can either buy some paints or decide to close down your market booth. It’s your call, my friend.

Buy Paints

When I’m playing this game, I can send my apprentices to the “market” column, and they can buy one market tile from the booth I choose. I can only buy each tile once, and the price I pay depends on what time I woke up earlier in the game. When I buy a tile, I take the paint pieces shown on it from the common supply and hide them behind my screen. After I finish buying from the booth, I have to return all the tiles from that booth back to the linen bag.

Shutting down a market booth

If you deploy at least one of your apprentices at the “market” column, you have the option to close down the booth instead of buying paints. This means that all the tiles from that booth will be returned to the linen bag. Closing down a booth is a free action that you can take.

Now let’s talk about the “cathedral” column. If you have apprentices deployed there, you can choose to either restore the fresco or the altar. It’s up to you to decide which one you want to work on.

  • To bring back one part of the fresco or
  • To bring back the altar

Bringing back a part of the fresco

The fresco is split into 25 parts. Each part is covered by 1 tile. To bring back a part, I need to have the paint pieces that are shown on the tile.

When I bring back a part, I return the required paint pieces to the supply. I also earn the victory points indicated on the tile, along with any bonus points from the bishop, if applicable.

I move my master painter on the victory point track, advancing as many spaces as the victory points I just earned (excluding the starting spaces S1 – S4, as the actual track starts with space 1).

When I move my painter in the game, I have to be careful not to end up on a space that’s already taken by another player’s painter. It’s a tough decision to make, but I can choose to stop on the next empty space either behind or in front of the occupied space. It’s important to remember that each space on the victory point track can only have one figure on it at a time.

Once I restore a segment in the game, I take the fresco tile from the board and put it face down in front of me. Then, I move the bishop to the segment that I just restored.

Now, let’s talk about moving the bishop.

When I want to restore a segment of the fresco, I have the option to move the bishop first. I can move the bishop in any direction – up, down, left, right, or diagonally – but just one space, and it will cost me 1 Thaler from the community supply.

The bishop can land on any segment, whether it has already been restored or is still covered by a tile.

Let’s talk about the bishop’s bonus points:

If the bishop is standing on the segment I want to restore, I will earn 3 bonus points. If the bishop is standing next to the segment, either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, I will earn 2 bonus points.

Now, let’s say I want to restore the altar instead of a segment:

I have two options for restoring the altar:

Option 1: Restore the altar using basic paints
Option 2: Restore the altar using 3 different blended paints only:

When I return one orange, green, and purple paint piece from behind my screen to the common supply, I earn 6 victory points for this restoration. It feels great to contribute to the overall color scheme!

Let’s Paint Portraits at the Studio!

If I have apprentices deployed at the “studio” column, I’ll be paid 3 Thalers from the common supply for each of them. It’s like getting a salary for my hard work!

Let’s Get Creative: Mixing Paints!

Hey there! Today, I want to talk about an exciting workshop activity that you can do with your paints. It’s called “Blend Paints.” It’s a super fun way to create new colors by combining different paint pieces!

When you’re at the workshop, you have the chance to blend paints up to two times. The cool thing is, you get to choose which paints you want to blend. How awesome is that?

Here’s how it works: You take the paints you want to blend and return them to the common supply. Then, you get a brand new paint piece that’s a mix of the colors you chose. It’s like magic!

So, next time you’re at the workshop, don’t miss out on the chance to blend paints and create something totally unique. Let your creativity flow and see what beautiful colors you can make!

The Power of Theater to Lift Your Spirits

When you visit a theater, something magical happens- it’s like stepping into a whole new world. The experience can be truly uplifting and has the potential to transform your mood. How does that work? Let me explain.

Imagine this: as you enter the theater, you feel the excitement building up inside you. The lights dim, the curtain rises, and you become immersed in a story that unfolds before your eyes. You can feel the emotions of the characters, their joy, their pain, their triumphs, and their struggles. It’s as if you’re living their experiences, laughing with them, crying with them.

These emotions that you experience in the theater can have a profound impact on your own mood. They have the power to uplift you, to transport you to a place of joy and wonder. The theater becomes a refuge from the stresses and worries of everyday life, a place where you can let go and be fully present in the moment.

But how does this happen? It’s all thanks to the master painters behind the scenes. You see, each apprentice deployed at the theater column can move their master painter two spaces upwards on the mood display. This means that every performance is carefully crafted to elicit a specific emotional response from the audience.

Whether it’s a comedy that leaves you rolling with laughter, a drama that tugs at your heartstrings, or a musical that fills you with song and dance, the theater has the power to evoke a wide range of emotions. And as you experience these emotions, your mood is lifted, your spirits soar, and you walk out of the theater feeling invigorated and inspired.

So, the next time you’re feeling down or in need of a pick-me-up, consider visiting the theater. Allow yourself to be transported to a different world, to be moved by the power of storytelling and performance. Let the theater work its magic on you, and watch as your mood transforms for the better.

I want to let you know that any change in mood while visiting the theater will take effect in the next round, after you choose your wake-up time. Only then can you retrieve or return any apprentices.

Once all players have completed their actions, it’s time to prepare for the next round. Here’s what you need to do:

– Draw the necessary number of market tiles for each market booth and place them face up.

– Each player receives their income, which is 1 Thaler for each of their face-down fresco tiles in front of them (this only applies if they have restored at least one segment of the fresco).

– All players move their master painters back to their sleeping places at the top of the hostel.

The player in the last position on the victory point track starts the next round by choosing their wake-up time.

When it comes to the end of the game, the player with the most victory points is the winner.

If there are only 6 or less fresco tiles left on the board when a round begins, then it means it’s the last round of the game. All of us will flip our action sheet over, and it will now show side 2.

After this round, the game will end, even if the fresco isn’t fully restored. No money is given as income at the end of the final round.

Now, let’s talk about something important – victory points! In the game, every player earns victory points based on how much money they have. It’s pretty simple: every 2 Thalers you have equal 1 victory point. These points are given out at the end of the game, with players going in order from the first player to the last.

Now, here comes the exciting part! The player with the most victory points is declared the master painter of all the frescoes and is crowned the winner of the game. So, do your best to collect those victory points and show everyone your true painting skills!
