The Rules of the Forbidden Desert Game
So, you’re interested in playing the Forbidden Desert game? Well, you’ve come to the right place! I’m going to break down the rules for you, step by step. Let’s get started!
Objective
The goal of the Forbidden Desert game is to work together with your teammates to find and collect all the missing parts of a legendary flying machine, and then use those parts to fly to safety before you succumb to the scorching desert heat!
Components
Here’s what you’ll find in the Forbidden Desert game box:
- 49 Desert Cards
- 48 Sand Markers
- 24 Storm Cards
- 6 Adventurer Cards
- 6 Adventurer Pawns
- 4 Airplane Standees
- 1 Sandstorm Meter
- 1 Solar Shield
- 1 3D Flying Machine Model
- 1 Wind Token
- 1 Rule Book
Setup
First, set up the game board by arranging the Desert Cards in a 5 x 5 grid. Then, place the sand markers over the corresponding spaces on the cards. Each player chooses an adventurer card and takes the matching pawn. The airplane standees are placed on their starting location. Next, place the sandstorm meter, solar shield, flying machine model, and wind token within reach of all players. Shuffle the storm cards and form a deck, and you’re ready to go!
Gameplay
In the Forbidden Desert game, players take turns performing actions to explore the desert and search for missing parts of the flying machine. On your turn, you can take up to four actions from the following options:
- Move to an adjacent card
- Remove sand marker from your card or a nearby card
- Share water or equipment with another player on the same card
- Excavate a card to search for a missing part or special equipment
- Flip a storm card and resolve its effect
Remember, time is running out! The storm is constantly brewing, causing sandstorms that bury the cards and create new challenges. You’ll need to work together and make strategic decisions to stay alive in the harsh desert.
Winning the Game
In order to win the Forbidden Desert game, you and your team must find all four missing parts of the flying machine and bring them to the launch pad card. Once all the parts are collected and the launch pad is clear of sand, you can assemble the flying machine and make your escape!
Conclusion
Now that you know the rules of the Forbidden Desert game, it’s time to gather your friends, form your team, and brave the treacherous desert together. Good luck and may the winds of fortune be in your favor!

Imagine this: you and your team are on a daring mission to unearth a mysterious ancient city in the desert. Legend has it that this forgotten city is hiding a remarkable flying machine, powered by the very sun itself. As you approach your destination, a sudden and ferocious sandstorm hits, forcing your helicopter to crash land.
Stranded in the vast expanse of the desert, with the relentless storm bearing down on you, you realize that your only chance of survival is to swiftly excavate the city and locate the scattered parts of the fabled flying machine. Time is of the essence as you race against the elements to rebuild the machine and make your daring escape.
But here’s the catch: if any member of your team succumbs to thirst or if the storm becomes too overwhelming, your entire team will fail, doomed to become permanent artifacts of the sun-scorched ‘Forbidden Desert.’
The Pieces of the Puzzle

Hey there! Have you heard of a game called “Forbidden Desert”? It’s a really cool game with some awesome features. Let me tell you all about it. In “Forbidden Desert,” you’ll find different cards and tiles that make up the game components. The cards in the game include 31 storm cards, 12 equipment cards, and 6 adventurer cards. These cards play a crucial role in how the game progresses and can have a big impact on your strategy.
But that’s not all! “Forbidden Desert” also comes with a set of 48 sand markers or city tiles, 24 double-sided desert and tunnel tiles, 6 wooden pawns, 6 meter clips, 4 flying machine parts, 1 sand storm meter, 1 sand storm meter stand, and 1 flying machine model. All of these components work together to create a thrilling and immersive gaming experience.
So how do you set up the game? Well, the first thing you need to do is examine the tiles. Take a close look at all the different tiles and make sure you understand what each one represents. This will help you strategize and plan your moves more effectively throughout the game. Understanding the tiles is key to your success in “Forbidden Desert.”

Create The Desert
Creating the perfect desert landscape is an art form, a delicate balance between natural beauty and intentional design. It’s a process that requires careful thought and consideration, as well as an understanding of the unique challenges posed by this particular environment.
First and foremost, it’s important to acknowledge the striking beauty of the desert. The vast expanses of sand, the towering mountains, and the breathtaking sunsets all contribute to the desert’s allure. But it’s also important to recognize the harsh realities of life in this unforgiving ecosystem.
In order to create a successful desert landscape, you’ll need to take into account the unique characteristics of the environment. The extreme temperatures, lack of water, and sparse vegetation all present challenges that must be overcome. But with a little creativity and ingenuity, it’s possible to transform the desert into a thriving oasis.
When it comes to choosing the right plants for your desert landscape, it’s important to select those that are well adapted to the region’s unique climate. Drought-tolerant plants like cacti and succulents are excellent choices, as they are able to survive with very little water. Additionally, native plants are often a good option, as they are already adapted to the local conditions.
Understanding the soil composition is also crucial when creating a desert landscape. Many desert soils are highly alkaline, which can pose challenges for plant growth. By adding organic matter and amendments, you can improve the soil’s fertility and create a more hospitable environment for your plants.
And if you like the idea of introducing some wildlife into your desert landscape, then you’ll love the opportunity to attract native species. By incorporating features like bird feeders, water sources, and sheltered areas, you can create a habitat that will attract a diverse range of wildlife.
With these factors in mind, you can begin to create your own desert oasis. By carefully selecting the right plants, improving the soil quality, and providing habitat for wildlife, you can transform the desert into a thriving landscape that is both beautiful and sustainable.
In today’s world, where environmental issues are becoming increasingly important, creating a desert landscape can be seen as a way to contribute positively to the planet. By choosing plants that require less water and by creating habitats that support local wildlife, you are helping to conserve resources and promote biodiversity.
In these uncertain times, it’s important to remember that nature has a way of regenerating and responding to change. The desert, with its extreme conditions and harsh beauty, is a testament to the resilience of life. By creating a desert landscape, you are not only creating a beautiful and unique space, but also participating in a larger story of adaptation and survival.
So if you’re looking for a creative and challenging project that will not only beautify your surroundings but also make a positive impact on the environment, then creating a desert landscape may be just the thing for you. By following these guidelines and embracing the unique qualities of the desert, you can create a truly remarkable space that is both functional and awe-inspiring.

So here’s what we’re gonna do: take those desert and city tiles, mix ’em up, and plop ’em down in a 5 x 5 square. But wait, leave one tile out in the middle to make things interesting. Oh, and make sure all the tiles are facing the same way, with the compass symbol in the top left. Give ’em a little space between each other. That square grid is our Forbidden Desert, where we’ll be movin’ our pawns like it’s a game board. Now, that hole in the middle? It represents the Sand Storm, which will be “movin'” around as we play.
First Things First: Place Some Sand Markers
Next Step: Flying Machine Parts
Sand Storm Time!
Deck Divided

First, let’s get organized. We have three decks: the Storm deck with the red back, the Equipment deck with the gear back, and the Adventurer cards. Let’s start by shuffling the Storm deck and placing it face down, right above the desert. Make sure the compass symbol is pointing away from the board to show “North.”
Now, shuffle the Equipment deck and put it face down next to the desert. We’re all set up and ready to go!
It’s Time for the Adventurers

Hey there! Let’s get started on this adventure. Shuffle the 6 Adventurer cards and deal out one to each person playing. Take a moment to read your card out loud so everyone knows your role and powers. You’ll see that each player has special abilities that you’ll need to use wisely in order to win. Look at the top left corner of your card, where you’ll find your adventurer’s canteen. Take a meter clip and attach it to your card, covering the top mark of your canteen (usually 4). This clip will move down as you drink water.
Grab a pawn that matches the color of your Adventurer card and place it on the “helicopter crash” tile. If there are any extra Adventurer cards or pawns, put them back in the box. Now we’re ready to play!
Game Play
The player who is the thirstiest gets to go first, and then play continues to the left. Each turn, follow these steps:
- Oh, but hold up! I can’t put the part in place until I’ve found both clues. Even if I think I know where it might be, I gotta be patient. The storm might shuffle things around between my turns!
- Here’s an interesting twist. If both clues point to where the storm is, then I put the part in the empty space. And you know what happens next? The next tile that moves into that spot during the Sand Storm part of the turn is where I find the missing part. Cool, huh?
- Thirst: If any player reaches the symbol on their canteen, it’s game over for everyone.
- Explore: Take some time to explore your surroundings and get familiar with the island. Look out for useful resources like food, water, and shelter.
- Gather Supplies: Collect any items you come across that might be helpful for survival, such as tools, rope, or first-aid kits.
- Build Shelter: It’s essential to have a safe place to rest and protect yourself from the elements. Look for materials like branches, leaves, or even caves to build a sturdy shelter.
- Find Water: Water is vital for survival. Look for natural water sources like rivers, streams, or even rainwater that has collected in leaves or crevices.
- Start a Fire: Fire provides warmth, light, and can be used to cook food. Gather dry sticks, leaves, or other flammable materials and use them to start a fire.
- Signal for Help: Make yourself visible to potential rescuers by creating signals. Use mirrors, shiny objects, or even build a large SOS sign on the beach.
- Buried: If you need to add a Sand marker to a tile but there aren’t any left in the supply.
- Swept Away: The Sand Storm meter reaches the symbol.
When it’s time for my turn, I have a few things I can do. First, I can take up to 4 actions. Then, I draw Storm cards equal to the Sand Storm level. Let me explain each part of my turn in more detail.
1. Take up to 4 actions:
During my turn, I have the opportunity to take up to 4 actions. This means I can choose to take anywhere from 0 to 4 actions. And guess what? My teammates can give me advice on the best actions to take! Here are the actions I can choose from:
– Move: I can move my pawn to an adjacent tile that isn’t blocked. I can move up, down, left, or right, but not diagonally. I can also move between unblocked tunnel tiles. Each move costs 1 action.
– Remove Sand: I can remove sand from the tile I’m on. This is important because too much sand can be dangerous. Removing sand also costs 1 action.
– Excavate: If I’m on a tile that has been cleared of sand, I can choose to excavate. This means I can search for hidden artifacts or clues. Excavating also costs 1 action.
– Pick Up a Part: If I find a part that I need for our mission, I can pick it up. This helps us progress and find a way to escape. Picking up a part costs 1 action.
2. Draw Storm cards:
After I’ve taken my actions, I need to deal with the Sand Storm. I draw cards equal to the Sand Storm level. These cards can have different effects, and I’ll need to be prepared for anything that comes my way.
Remember, on the back of each Adventurer card, there’s a quick reference guide that can help me remember all of this information. It’s good to have a reminder, especially during intense moments when I need to make quick decisions.
Now that I understand the different parts of my turn, I feel more confident and ready to explore. I know I can count on my teammates for advice and support as we work together to escape this treacherous place. Let’s do this!
Did you know that a tile is considered “blocked” when there are at least two Sand markers on it? That’s right! If there’s a space with the Sand Storm, you’re not allowed to move through it either.
B. Remove Sand
If you see any Sand markers on your tile or on a tile next to yours (above, below, to the left, or to the right), you can get rid of them by taking 1 action for each marker. When you remove a Sand marker, put it back in the pile of markers near the board.
C. Excavate
If your game piece is on the desert side of a tile that doesn’t have any Sand markers, you can excavate it using 1 action.
Flip the tile over so that the side with the city is facing up, and make sure the icon is in the lower right corner in relation to the North direction. Then follow the instructions for the symbol you see.
Note: Once you excavate a tile, you can’t undo it. Once you turn a tile over, you’ve used up your action for the turn.
D. Pick Up A Part
You can use 1 action to pick up a Flying Machine part that has been revealed on a tile that is not blocked and has been excavated. Put the part in front of you.
Once my team collects all four parts, we race to the Launch Pad where we can assemble the flying machine and take off for the win!
Remember: If the part is on an unexcavated tile, we must first excavate before claiming it.
Not only can we do the actions mentioned above, but we can also share water and pass equipment cards with other players on the same tile at any time during the game, and it won’t cost us anything. To share water, one of us moves our canteen meter down by 1 or more tick marks, while the other player moves their water meter up the same number of tick marks.
Just remember: We can never have more water in our canteen than the maximum amount indicated at any time.
Here’s an Example of a Turn:

The Water Carrier Spends 4 Actions:
When I play as the Water Carrier, there are four actions that I can take. The first two actions are about removing sand. To remove the sand, all I have to do is remove one sand marker for each action. This helps clear the way so I can move around more easily.
Once I’ve cleared the sand, I can take action three, which is to move to an adjacent tile. This allows me to explore different areas of the game board and find new places to dig.
Action four for the Water Carrier is the Excavate action. When I use this action, I flip over the current tile I’m on, revealing what’s underneath. This can be really exciting because it unveils special tiles and symbols that hold different meanings and impacts on the game.
Special Tiles and Symbols
Water (3 Tiles)

Did you know that three desert tiles have a little water symbol in the bottom right corner? It means that there could be water hidden underneath!
If you happen to dig up a tile with this symbol and it turns out to be a well, you and all the other players who have their pawns on that tile can add two water to your canteens.
To make the most of this opportunity, it’s a good idea to communicate with your teammates and plan to gather on that tile before you start excavating.

Watch out: Beware! There’s a sneaky trick on one of the tiles. If you dig up that particular tile, nobody gets any water.
Stuff you need (12 Tiles)

When you dig up a tile with this symbol in the bottom right corner, you find a valuable piece of equipment that can help your team during the game. I immediately draw the top card from the Equipment deck, place it in front of me with its face up, and read its instructions. I keep the card until I decide to use it.
Remember: Only I can use the Equipment cards that I have. However, I can pass them to another player on the same tile for free. Most equipment can be used at any time (check the details on each card), but in general, they can’t undo the effects of Storm cards once they’ve been drawn. There’s no limit to how many equipment cards I can have.
Clues for the Locations of the Flying Machine Parts (2 tiles for each part)

Did you know that there are secret messages hidden beneath the desert? These messages hold the key to finding the parts of a special flying machine. Pretty cool, huh? Let me tell you how it works.
For each flying machine part, there are two clues. These clues will lead you to a specific tile where the part is hidden. The first clue tells you the row, which is the direction from east to west. The second clue gives you the column, which is the direction from north to south.
Now, here’s the exciting part. As soon as you uncover the second clue for any part, you’ll be able to place that part right on the tile where the row and column intersect. It’s like putting together a puzzle, and each part you find gets you one step closer to discovering the complete flying machine.

So, let’s put on our sneakers, get moving, and enjoy living our best, healthiest lives!

1 So, when I start looking for clues, I get a hint that the solar crystal might be in the second row. But here’s the tricky part – keep in mind that the storm can mess with the tiles, so the clue might not stay in the same spot!
2 Once I find the second clue, something exciting happens! I can figure out exactly where the part is hiding and place it on the right tile. And guess what? From now on, whenever the storm blows, the part moves with the tile!
Notes:
Underground Passageways (3 Tiles)
Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the surface? I have. And let me tell you, there’s a whole secret world down there, just waiting to be explored. Today, I want to talk to you about tunnels – amazing underground passageways that come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Tunnels are like hidden bridges, solid as a rock and ready to take you places you’ve never been before. Whether you’re looking for a shortcut or an adventure, tunnels have got you covered. They can take you under mountains, across rivers, or through busy cities. It’s like having a secret superpower that allows you to bypass all the chaos and noise above ground.
One of the key things to understand about tunnels is that they come in many different sizes. Some are big enough to fit a train, while others are just wide enough for a person to crawl through. But no matter their size, all tunnels share a common purpose – to connect people and places. They are the ultimate connectors, bringing us closer together and making the world a smaller, more accessible place.
But tunnels aren’t just convenient passageways. They are also feats of engineering brilliance. Building a tunnel requires careful planning, precise calculations, and a whole lot of hard work. Engineers have to consider the soil, the water, and the rocks in order to create a safe and stable passage. It’s like solving a giant puzzle where every piece has to fit perfectly, and one wrong move could lead to disaster.
I find tunnels fascinating because they are a perfect blend of human ingenuity and the power of nature. They are proof that we can work with the Earth’s resources to create something incredible. And the best part is that tunnels have been around for centuries. From ancient underground cities to modern subway systems, tunnels have been a part of human history since the beginning.
So, if you’re someone who loves adventures and mysteries, tunnels are definitely something you should explore. They are a window into the hidden world beneath our feet, and they offer a chance to see things in a whole new light. Next time you see a tunnel, take a moment to appreciate the engineering marvel and the stories it holds. You never know what secrets you might uncover.

Hey there! Let me tell you about this super cool ancient city I discovered. It had this amazing underground system of tunnels! They were perfect for getting around and staying safe from the scorching desert sun.
The tunnels were really handy. You could use them to move between any two excavated Tunnel tiles with just one action. Pretty efficient, right? Oh, but here’s the catch – you couldn’t move to a tunnel tile that had two or more Sand markers. Gotta watch out for those!
But wait, there’s more! The tunnels also provided shelter from these sneaky cards called “Sun Beats Down” cards. If you had your pawn on one of those excavated tiles, you didn’t even have to drink water when one of those cards showed up. Phew, saved you from a lot of dehydration! Make sure to check out the “Draw Sand Storm Cards” section for more details on that.
Now let me tell you about the awesome Launch Pad! (It’s just one tile, by the way.)

This is a crucial step because it’s where we all need to meet up and put together our flying machine. Remember to keep the area free of sand!
2. Keep an eye out for Sand Storm Cards

Now that you’ve taken action, it’s time to step into the shoes of the mighty Sand Storm! I’m going to tell you what you need to do. First, grab some cards from the Sand Storm draw pile. The number of cards you need to take is the same as the current level of the Sand Storm meter. For example, if the level is at 3, you’ll grab 3 cards.
Once you have the cards, it’s time to reveal them, one by one. Look for the wind rose icon at the bottom of each card. Then, place the revealed cards near the Storm discard pile.
After you’ve revealed and applied the effects of the cards, it’s time to get rid of them. Discard them face up into the discard pile.
Remember: You have the power to look through the discard pile whenever you want during the game.
Here’s the Deal: Wind Changes Direction

When you play these cards, they really pack a punch! The number of squares on the card determines how many tiles get blown into the sandstorm hole on the board. It’s like a sandstorm sweeping through!
And here’s the twist – if there are any pawns, Sand markers, or flying machine parts on the tiles, they get carried along with the shifting tiles. It’s a wild ride!

Let me explain a simple concept to you. It’s called shifting and it can be a bit confusing at first. But don’t worry, I’ll break it down for you.
Imagine you have a card that tells you to shift 2 tiles to the left. What does that mean? Well, it means you need to move the tile that is immediately to the right of the hole into the hole.
Let’s say you have a row of tiles like this:
1
2
3
4
If you follow the card’s instruction and shift 2 tiles to the left, you would move the tile with the number 3 into the hole, like this:
3
1
2
4
See how the tiles have shifted? The tile that was to the right of the hole has now moved into the hole.
Shifting can be a little tricky at first, but with practice, you’ll get the hang of it. Just remember, when a card tells you to shift a certain number of tiles, it means you need to move the tile that is immediately to the right of the hole into the hole itself.
So, here’s what you do: once you’ve moved the first tile, repeat the process for the next tile right next to the Storm.

Hey there! Let’s talk about moving tiles and adding sand markers, shall we? Here’s the lowdown: whenever you move a tile, whether it’s already on the board or a newly excavated one, you gotta slap a Sand marker on it. It’s as simple as that! So, don’t forget to sprinkle some sand on those tiles, just like you would with any other tile. It’s all part of the game!

There’s no limit to how much sand can pile up on a tile. However, once you stack a second Sand marker, that tile becomes blocked to all movement until there is only one or no marker on it.
To indicate that the tile is impassable, place the 2nd and any subsequent Sand markers with the “X” side facing up.
Here’s an important note: If you need to place a Sand marker on a tile that already has a flying machine part, make sure you first lift the part off the tile, add the marker, and then put the part back on top of the pile.
Now let’s talk about “Dig Out.” If you find yourself on a tile with 2 or more Sand markers, you become “buried” in the sand. Before you can take any further actions, you must remove Sand markers from the tile until there is only one or none left. Your teammates can also lend a hand by spending their actions to help remove sand from your tile.
And finally, let’s discuss “Respite From The Storm.”
If there isn’t a tile available to move, you can take a break from the storm. No Sand marker will be placed, and the missing tile won’t be moved.
Here’s an example:

First, I draw a card called “Wind Blows 3 North.” Then, I move the tile below the storm to the North. After that, I move the second tile also to the North.
Since there isn’t a third tile to move, I stop moving tiles. Now, I add 1 Sand marker onto each tile that I moved. It’s important to note that with two Sand markers on these tiles, they are now blocked and cannot be moved.
Buried in the Sand
If I ever have to place a Sand marker on a tile and there are no more left, it means my team has been buried in the sand, and we lose the game!
Storm Picks Up

Hey there! Let me tell you a little bit about the Storm Picks Up cards in the Storm deck. They’re pretty important!
So, in the deck, there are actually 3 of these Storm Picks Up cards. Now, when you draw one of these cards, something interesting happens. The Sand Storm meter goes up by one tick mark. Cool, right?
But here’s the really cool part. When the meter reaches the skull and crossbones, it means that the Storm has become super intense. Trust me, you don’t want to be caught up in that. If it happens, everyone playing the game gets swept away by the wind, and that’s game over. Yikes!
Sun Beats Down

Did you know that there are 4 Sun Beats Down cards in the Storm deck? It’s true!
When you get a Sun Beats Down card, all players who aren’t on a tile with a Tunnel or protected by a Solar Shield have to drink 1 water from their canteen. Make sure to lower the water meter on your canteen to the next lower tick mark.
Here’s an important thing to remember: if any player reaches the symbol on their canteen, they become incredibly thirsty and the whole game ends in defeat. So stay hydrated!
What happens when the Storm Draw Pile Runs Out?
If the Storm draw pile runs out, don’t worry! Just grab the Storm discard pile and shuffle it. Then, stack the cards face down to create a new Storm draw pile. And if this happens in the middle of someone’s turn, keep drawing Storm cards as needed from the new pile.
Let’s Talk About the End of the Game
How to Win the Game
What Happens if You Lose the Game
