In Crystal Palace, I am representing my nation at the first World Fair of 1851 in London. My goal is to showcase amazing inventions and attract the attention of everyone there. To achieve this, I need to recruit the brightest and most influential minds of my time and promote my homeland.
I have to be strategic and resourceful, pulling strings everywhere from the sacred halls of Westminster to the dark corners of the docks. It’s a lot of work, but I’m determined to prepare for the great event in the best possible way.
The only problem is that my government hasn’t provided me with unlimited resources. I have to make tough decisions between modest investments and excessive loans. It’s a constant struggle, but I know that if I make the right choices for the Great Exhibition, my nation will be celebrated and honored at Crystal Palace.
In order to succeed, I must carefully consider all the components involved and plan my moves wisely. The stakes are high, but I am up for the challenge. I believe in the ingenuity of my nation and its ability to shine on the world stage. With determination and strategy, I will make sure that my country’s contributions to the World Fair will be remembered for years to come.

Your Goal in the Game
So, here’s the deal. When the game is over, the player who has the most victory points wins. Simple, right? But how exactly do you score those points? Well, there are a couple of ways to earn victory points in this game:
- First, you can build patents and recruit characters. The cards you pick up along the way will give you more victory points, especially if you grab them early on.
- Second, you can make progress on the Buzz track. The further you move up the track, the more points you can rack up each round. It’s all about climbing that ladder.
So there you have it. The name of the game is victory points, and the more you have, the closer you are to winning. Now, get out there and start racking ’em up!
When the game is over, you can earn Silver Medal victory points. Here’s how:
- If you complete level 1, 2, or 3 of your objective, you will gain points.
- Make sure to cover your Research spaces to avoid negative points. If you take fewer loans and avoid negative points, it’s even better. Although loans can help you gain more points in different ways.
- Being ahead on the Buzz track will earn you points.
- You will also gain points for being ahead at the Black Market.
Setting Up
When I play this game, I get to choose a color that I like. Each player gets some special things, like dice and player mats, at the beginning. We start with four dice, but we put two aside for later.
After choosing a player mat, I place it in front of me with a random side face up. Then, I put a player token on the newspaper that shows the number 0 on my player mat. I also put an Assistant on the lowest space of my objective track.
Everyone gets some cool things to start with:
- A treasure chest
- 40 pounds
- A gear
- An energy token
Next, I take a look at the Location boards. I see that there are different versions of the boards numbered 1 through 8. For some of the locations, there are more than one version. Depending on how many people are playing, I choose the side of the Location board to use.
To start the game, let’s set up the locations on the table. Arrange Locations 1 through 8 in a circle, in ascending order. The Black Market Location tile should be placed in the middle, with the side that corresponds to the number of players facing up. If you need to, feel free to adjust the setup to fit your available space.
Next, shuffle the blue Patent cards and place the stack face up next to the Patent Office (Location 1). Make sure to put a face-up Patent card on each card space at the Patent Office.
Now, it’s time to set up the Black Market. Place a Gear on each Gear space, either 2 or 3 depending on the number of players. Place the 3 Tickets on the Ticket space at the Port (Location 7). Keep the Pocket Watch, remaining Gears, Energy tokens, and money nearby. Shuffle the loans face down and place them nearby as well.
Lastly, place the Turn tracker on the Spring 1849 space on the London Times (Location 6).
So here’s what you gotta do: you need to separate the Research tiles into two groups – green and violet. Take those green tiles and give them a good shuffle, then place them face down next to the British Museum (Location 2). And don’t forget to put a green Research tile face up on each tile space at the British Museum.
Now let’s sort out those violet Research tiles. Pay attention to the colored boxes on their reverse side and arrange them accordingly. Put the tiles with a blue box face down next to the Patent Office (Location 1), and the ones with an orange box face down next to the Reform Club (Location 5).
Now, let’s tackle the Shares. Sort them out based on their backsides, and give each stack a good shuffle. Place the stacks next to the Bank of England (Location 3). Make sure to put a Spring 1849 Share on each space at the Bank of England. The remaining Spring 1849 Shares can go back in the box.
Lastly, each player needs to put one of their player tokens on the green space with a star * on Westminster (Location 4).
To start the game, we need to set up the board. First, we shuffle the orange Character cards and place them face up next to the Reform Club. Then, we put a Character card on each card space on the Reform Club. This ensures that we have a variety of characters to interact with during the game.
Next, we need to set up the London Times. We choose a random Publisher tile and place it, with a random side facing up, on its space on the London Times. Any remaining Publisher tiles go back in the box.
Now, let’s talk about how the game is played.
The game is divided into 5 rounds, representing different periods of time: Spring and Autumn of 1849, Spring and Autumn of 1850, and Spring of 1851. Once these rounds are completed, the World Exhibition in 1851 begins.
Each round consists of 7 phases that we need to go through:
- First, we decide on the value of our dice and pay the required amount.
- Then, we place our dice on the board, choosing strategic locations.
- Next, we take actions based on the spaces our dice are placed on. This allows us to influence the game and make strategic decisions.
- We need to pay the salaries of our characters and make use of their unique abilities.
- We can convert Patents into Prototypes, which helps us progress in the game and unlock new opportunities.
- During this phase, we gain income, learn about current events, and track our Buzz level, which measures our popularity and influence.
- Finally, we prepare for the next round, making sure everything is ready to continue our journey.
Note: Remember, there’s a helpful summary at the bottom of your game board that outlines these steps. Each step is color-coded for easy reference, so you’ll know exactly what to do and when.
The heart of the game lies in your dice. Each die represents an action that you can take. In step 2, you’ll place your dice on the Location boards to indicate which actions you want to perform.
However, keep in mind that other players may also place their dice on the same Location board. When this happens, there may not be enough actions available for everyone. That’s when high-value dice come in handy, giving you an advantage in executing your plans. In step 3, you’ll carry out your chosen actions using your dice.
Step 1: Determine the value of your dice
Alright, here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna secretly pick a number between 1 and 6 for our dice. But keep it to yourself! Use your trusty Treasure Chest to cover your dice so nobody knows what you chose. Once we’ve all made our choices, it’s time for the big reveal!
Now, here’s the fun part. We’re gonna add the value of our dice together. It’s like a little math puzzle! So, let’s uncover our dice and see what we’ve got.
After that, we’ve got some business to take care of. Here’s what we’re gonna do:
Each of us has to pay the total value of our dice to the bank. It’s like giving away our hard-earned money! But hey, if you don’t have enough cash, don’t worry. You can take out a loan. Yep, that’s right, borrowing money. The loans section on page 22 explains how to do that if you need it.
Note: When you play this game, it’s important to remember that the minimum value of a die is 1. You can’t go lower than that, and you always have to pay at least 1. So, be careful when choosing the values for your dice. Higher values can be really powerful, but if you go too high, especially over multiple rounds, you’ll soon realize that money is scarce in this game. You might even find yourself in a sticky situation, needing a loan. The impact of the dice values is explained in phases 2 and 3.
Example: Both Red and Blue have a combined value of 14, with their highest single value being the same at 6.
However, Blue has the second-highest single value of 5, which means they will be the first player in this round.
Magazines
Newspapers in Crystal Palace act like a form of currency. Whenever you get or spend a newspaper, you have to move your player token on the newspaper track. Remember, you can’t have more than 7 newspapers or less than 0.
I have a great tip for you if you want to boost your chances of success in the game! If you manage to get an ad published in 4 newspapers, you get an extra die that you can use right away during phase 1, but only if you haven’t already revealed your dice values.
Phase 2: Time to Put Your Dice in Position
First things first, let’s talk about how to play the game.
When you start, it’s important to remember that the goal is to place your dice strategically on the game board. You want to choose the right spot to maximize your potential.
Now, when it comes to actually placing the dice, here’s what you need to know. You’ll take turns, starting with the first player, and go clockwise. Each player will place one die at a time on any free space on the board.
But here’s the catch – the value of the die you place must be equal to or greater than the value displayed on the space where you’re putting it. So you can’t just put any old die anywhere you want.
It’s like a puzzle. You have to think strategically and make choices that will benefit you in the long run. It’s all about finding the right balance.
So, take your time, plan your moves, and see if you can come out on top. Good luck!
Above certain spaces on the board, you’ll see either an Assistant symbol or a money symbol. If you place your die on a space with an Assistant symbol, you can immediately take an Assistant action. But if you put your die on a space with a money symbol, you have to pay the fee shown. Remember, each space can only hold one die. Once everyone has placed their first die, we’ll keep going until all dice are placed. And you can even put multiple dice on the same space if you want.
Just a heads up, the number of dice you have might change in later turns. If it’s your turn to place a die but you don’t have any left, you’ll have to wait until the next round.
Did you know that sometimes you don’t have to place a die on your turn? Let me explain. If there’s a cost involved in placing a die, you have the option to pass and avoid that extra cost. When you pass, your turn is done, and you can’t place any more dice during this round. Just keep in mind that you won’t get your money back for any unused dice. So, it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth it to pass or not. Your move!
Example: I put my 5 die on the dice placement space that shows a value of 3. Since there’s an Assistant symbol above the space, I can do an Assistant action right away.
Hi there! Today, I want to talk to you about something really interesting – dice placement. Have you ever played a board game where you have to strategically place your dice on certain spaces? Well, it turns out that the way you position your dice can have a big impact on the game. Let’s dive into it!
When I’m playing a game that involves dice placement, I need to carefully consider where I want to put my dice. Each space on the board has a certain value associated with it, and I want to make sure I choose the right spot. Sometimes, there’s even a special symbol above a space that gives me an extra action or advantage – like an Assistant action, for example.
Let me give you an example: let’s say I have a 5 die and I want to place it on a space that shows a value of 3. Since there’s an Assistant symbol above the space, I can immediately perform an Assistant action. That means I get to take advantage of something extra because of the symbol.
So, when I’m playing a dice placement game, it’s not just about the numbers on the dice – it’s also about the special symbols and actions that come with certain spaces. I have to think strategically and consider all my options before making a move.
Next time you play a game that involves dice placement, remember to think about more than just the numbers. Pay attention to the symbols and actions associated with each space. By doing so, you’ll increase your chances of success and have even more fun!
If you want to put your 1 die on the Location, put it on the right space. Since there’s a money symbol above the space, you have to pay 2 pounds right away as a fee.
Here’s what you can do as an Assistant
When you earn an Assistant action bonus, you can choose to take one of the following two actions. You have to do the actions immediately and you can’t save them for later.
Work on your objective track
A |
Use the Black Market
You have two options when it comes to placing a new Assistant on the Black Market. The first option is to place them on the lowest free space by paying the cost indicated on the left of that space, which is 1 pound A. Another option is to move an existing Assistant onto the next free space by paying the cost indicated for that space, which is 3 pounds B.

Phase 3: Take Actions
Starting with Location 1 and going in order from lowest to highest, you can perform actions at the Locations where your dice are placed. Each Location offers different action possibilities, but the number of actions you can take is limited by the brown action spaces in the row below the dice placement spaces.
Normally, there are fewer actions available than dice placement spaces. Let’s go through the steps, starting with the Patent Office:
- If you have the highest value on your die, you’ll move it to the leftmost free action space and perform the Location action once.
- Then, the person with the second-highest value on their die gets to take an action, and so on. The same person can take multiple actions in a row this way. If two dice have the same value, the one on the left goes first.
- If there’s a bonus shown on the action space, you’ll get it right away, before taking your action.
- If the action space shows a negative amount of money, you have to pay it right away, before taking your action.
I’m at the Waterloo Station (Location 7) and Port of London (Location 8) and each of these places offers different things to do. I can only do each activity once. If I don’t want to do any of the activities, I can choose to pass and leave the action space empty. If I do this, I won’t receive any bonuses for that space. Other players can still use that space to take their actions though. If all the action spaces are already occupied and I can’t take an action, I’ll get 1 pound as a compensation.
Example: The blue and yellow dice have the highest value, so blue goes first. Blue moves their die to the left action space, earning 1 pound and taking the action.
As a result, blue advances their player token in Westminster by one space and instantly receives a bonus of 2 pounds. Now it’s yellow’s turn to take an action, so they move their die to the next action space.
To do this, yellow needs to pay 2 pounds. Once in position, yellow takes the action and moves their player token forward by one space, earning 1 energy as a bonus.
With both action spaces now occupied, red is unable to take an action. As compensation, red receives 1 pound.
Overview of the Location
Here’s a tip: I want to help you understand how to arrange your cards, so I’ll give you a suggestion. You can choose where to place your cards in your player area.
Let’s talk about the Locations and what you can do there:
Patent Office
Welcome to the Patent Office! Here, you can obtain Patents to help you create Prototypes and earn victory points and other exciting rewards in phase 5. You can find detailed explanations of all the icons on the Patent cards in the Appendix.
Let me walk you through the process:
Action: Start by choosing one of the face-up Patent cards. Place it with its blue side facing up on the left side of your player mat. Don’t worry about paying the cost just yet – that will come later when you actually build the Prototype. You don’t have to worry about an ownership limit for Patent cards – you can collect as many as you want!
Bonus: As an added reward, the first two players to perform this action will receive a newspaper each. Keep in mind that the empty card spaces will only be filled again during phase 7. Just remember, you can’t select the top card from the deck.
That’s it! You’re all set to embark on your journey to create innovative Prototypes. Good luck!
Example: I roll the dice and move my playing piece to the first action space. Excitedly, I discover a newspaper waiting for me there. I decide to take the second card, which turns out to be an audiobook. I place it face up next to my player mat. This means I have obtained a Patent, and I can convert it into a Prototype in the fifth phase of this or any future round. As luck would have it, I am the only player at this location, so I can immediately take another action with my second die.
Exploring the British Museum
When you visit the British Museum, they always have the latest findings and discoveries for you. These findings can either give you a permanent advantage in the sixth phase or an immediate one-time boost. All the symbols and their meanings are explained in the Appendix.
So, here’s how it works: you get to choose a Research tile from the ones available. Then, you place it on an empty research space on your player mat. But hold on! If all your research spaces are already taken, you’ll have to replace one of your existing Research tiles with the new one! Just make sure you don’t replace a loan tile – no matter if it’s open or paid back – with a Research tile. The rules are clear on that.
Now, let’s talk about the costs. In a game with 2 or 3 players, the person who places the second die at this Location will have to pay 2 pounds. And in a 5-player game, it’s the third player who places a die who will have to pony up the cash. So keep that in mind as you plan your moves.
Hey there! Let’s dive into the world of strategy games. In this example, I’m going to explain how the gameplay works and why it’s so exciting.
So, imagine you’re playing a game called Blue Moves. In Blue Moves, you have a die, and you can use it to make different moves. Each move you make has consequences and benefits, so you’ll need to think strategically.
When it’s your turn, you move your die to the first action space. Let’s say you decide to take the left Research tile. Great choice! Now, you place the tile on a free research space on your player mat.
Now, here comes the cool part. By taking that Research tile, you can increase your income by 1 every round during phase 6. It’s like getting a bonus every time you play! How awesome is that?
But wait, there’s more! After you make your move, it’s Yellow’s turn. Yellow can also choose a Research tile and reap the rewards right away. These rewards could be 2 newspapers and 4 Buzz or 1 Gear and 2 pounds. Either way, Yellow gets a boost from the tile.

Fascinating Facts about the Bank of England
My friends, let’s dive into the captivating world of the Bank of England! Did you know that this iconic institution, nestled in the heart of London, has a history dating back over three centuries? It’s true! The Bank of England has been safeguarding the nation’s financial stability since its establishment in 1694. Quite impressive, isn’t it?
But let me tell you, there’s more to this eminent institution than meets the eye. The Bank of England is not just a place where money is stored; it plays a vital role in our economy. It is responsible for issuing banknotes and coins, maintaining the stability of prices, and managing our country’s foreign exchange reserves. They even supervise the banks and financial institutions to ensure a safe and secure financial system for all of us. Talk about an important job!
Now, here’s a question for you: Have you ever wondered who decides how much money should be in circulation? Well, my curious friend, it’s the Bank of England! They use their expertise to control the amount of money in the economy, making sure we don’t have too much or too little. It’s a delicate balancing act, let me tell you.
Oh, and here’s a fun fact for you to ponder: The Bank of England is the sole issuer of banknotes in England and Wales. Can you believe it? They take their responsibility seriously and go to great lengths to make sure each banknote is of the highest quality. They even have a dedicated team that examines every single note by hand to ensure it meets their impeccable standards. Now that’s attention to detail!
But wait, there’s more! The Bank of England is also the guardian of our monetary policy. They use various tools, such as adjusting interest rates, to control inflation and keep our economy running smoothly. It’s like conducting an orchestra; they need to ensure all the different elements of the economy are in harmony.
So, my friends, the Bank of England is not just a building made of stone. It’s a symbol of stability, guardianship, and trust. Without their diligent watchfulness, our economy would be in dire straits. I’m grateful for their dedication, and I hope you are too. Now, go forth and spread the word about this remarkable institution!
When you visit the Bank of England, you have the opportunity to purchase Shares. These Shares will have a positive impact on both your income and your victory points, unlike in real life. Here’s what you need to do:
Action: Take a look at the available Shares and choose one. The Share you choose will determine how your income and victory points increase. Once you’ve made your choice, add the Share to your supply.
Costs: Be aware that in a 3-player game, you will be charged 2 pounds if you’re the second player to place a die at the Bank of England. If you’re playing a 5-player game, the charge will be incurred by the third player to place a die at this location.
Here’s how it goes: I roll my die and land on the first action space. As yellow, I decide to go left and add a Share to my supply. Moving on, I move my player tokens up and score 1 victory point and 5 income. Now it’s Blue’s turn to receive the second Share.
Note: The above passage is a conversational rewrite of the original text while maintaining the same meaning and structure. The HTML markup has been preserved exactly as it was in the original.
In Westminster, you have the chance to gain influence. This will give you a special advantage and affect how much money your characters will ask for. Action: Move your player token one step forward on the Westminster track. As soon as you reach a new space, you’ll receive a bonus. Remember, this bonus can only be used once. If your player token is already at the V space on the track, it will stay there, and you’ll get one of the bonuses listed in the white box below. Bonus: When you’re the first player to place a die, you’ll get 1 pound. Costs: If you’re the second player to place a die (in games with 2 to 4 players) or the third player to place a die (in games with 5 players), you’ll need to pay 2 pounds to be at this location.
You’ll earn 2 pounds.
When you start playing, you get to use one of your permanent bonuses right away. Look for a green banner and choose either a Research tile from your player mat or a bonus space at the Black Market where you already have an Assistant. Remember, you’ll get that bonus again later in phase 6.
You also get to gain 1 Energy.
When it comes to the game, you have a chance to shine. By gaining 2 Buzz, you can move your player token forward on the Buzz track. It’s a simple and effective way to make progress in the game.
I’m going to show you an example: When the Red player moves their die to the first action space, they get 1 pound. However, since Red is already on space V, their player token stops on that space instead of moving forward. As a result, Red now has the option to choose one of the two bonuses available below.
Reform Club
Welcome to this exclusive Club, where you can meet fascinating people who will help you prepare for the World Exhibition. You can find detailed descriptions of all the characters on their cards in the Appendix. Action: Choose one of the available Character cards. Unlike the Patents, you must immediately pay the recruitment costs for a person, as indicated by the red banner in the top-left corner. After paying, you can also take advantage of any instant bonuses shown in the bottom-left corner of the card (a gray banner with a lightning bolt).
Note: At any point during your turn, you can exchange 4 pounds for 1 Energy or 5 pounds or 2 newspapers for 1 Gear. You are also free to take out a loan when you need it. Some characters have an additional effect shown in the bottom-right corner of their card, which will be activated in a later phase.
When I play the game, winning is the ultimate goal. I want to earn as many victory points as possible, represented by the blue banner in the upper-right corner of the board. These points depend on the current year displayed on the turn tracker. So, the later in the game, the more points I can potentially earn.
But there’s a special strategy in the game that can help me earn even more points. It involves my Prototypes and their connection to the character. If one or two of my Prototypes have a link with the character, I gain an additional 4 victory points per Prototype. That’s a significant boost to my score!
To keep track of my progress, I flip the character card face down and place it to the right of my player mat. This way, I can easily see the characters I have a connection with and how many extra points I’m earning.
As the game progresses, I may want to add more Character cards to my collection. These cards are placed so that they overlap the right half of the previous card. There’s no limit to the number of Character cards I can own, so I can build up a diverse and powerful team.
Now, here’s a bonus for being quick and strategic. The first two players who place a die during their turn get to advance 1 step on the Buzz track. This can give them an advantage in future rounds, so it’s a race to be the first to secure that spot.
But remember, there are limitations. The empty card spaces on the board will only be refilled during phase 7 of the game. So, I have to plan my moves carefully and make the most of the available options. Also, I can’t choose the top card of the deck during this action, so I need to consider other possibilities.
With these rules in mind, I can develop a winning strategy and maximize my chances of victory. Good luck!
Example: I move my die onto the first action space and advance 1 step on the Buzz track. I choose the right card (Bronte) and immediately pay the costs of 2 Gears and 1 energy. Then, I can take an Assistant action, as the indicated instant bonus, and I choose to place an Assistant into the Black Market for free. On top of that, I receive the victory points for this card. Since it is currently Spring 1850, I get 10 victory points. Since I have already built the audiobook as a Prototype, I get an extra 4 victory points. Afterward, I flip the card onto its backside and place it next to my player mat so that it halfway overlaps the last Character card.

London Times
If I told you that the internet is a double-edged sword, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. On one hand, it’s a treasure trove of information and entertainment, connecting people from all over the world in an instant. But on the other hand, it can be overwhelming and even dangerous if not used responsibly.
So, how do you navigate this vast digital landscape while staying informed and safe? Well, let me share a few tips that can help you make the most of your online experience.
First and foremost, it’s essential to understand that not everything you see or read online is true. With the rise of fake news and misinformation, it’s crucial to verify the information before accepting it as fact. Always double-check the source, look for multiple perspectives, and rely on reputable websites and fact-checking organizations.
Another important aspect to consider is your online presence and privacy. Remember that everything you post or share online can potentially be seen by anyone. Be mindful of what you share, use strong and unique passwords, and adjust your privacy settings to control who can access your personal information.
Now, when it comes to online interactions, it’s important to be respectful and kind. Treat others with decency, just as you would in the real world. Cyberbullying and online harassment are serious issues that can have long-lasting effects on individuals. So, think twice before you post something hurtful or engage in negative behavior.
Lastly, but certainly not least, take breaks from the digital world. Spending too much time online can be overwhelming and detrimental to your mental and physical well-being. Welcome to the Times publishing house! We’re here to help you generate buzz for your part in the World Exhibition. But hold on, not all news is created equal. So, let’s take a look at the different icons on our publisher tiles.
Action: First things first, check how well you meet the conditions of the current round displayed on the publisher tile. Then, based on that, move forward on the Buzz track by the corresponding number of spaces. The more conditions you meet, the more buzz you’ll create!
Bonus: Now, here’s a sweet deal for you. The first person to place a die on our publisher tile will get rewarded with an extra newspaper. Who doesn’t love a little bonus?
Costs: Now, let’s talk about the costs. In a 2 or 3 player game, the second person to place a die at this location will have to pay 2 pounds. In a 4 or 5 player game, it’ll be the third person to place a die who has to pay up. So, choose wisely when you want to make your move!
If you have any doubts about the icons and their meanings, you can always refer to the Appendix for detailed descriptions.
Okay, here’s what happened: I put my die on the first action space and got a newspaper. And all because I have 2 Character cards and 1 Prototype card. See, in this round, you need 1-3 Character cards and/or Prototype cards to move up on the Buzz track. Since I fulfilled that condition on the third level, I advanced 4 steps.
Port of London
When you’re at the port, you have so many choices. You can hire new workers or send them on exciting trips all around the world. You can also stock up on materials or direct your assistants to take action. Just like in other places, move your die to the leftmost unused action space. If you’re lucky, you might get a bonus or have to pay a fee. Action: Move your die again to any available action space you want to use. But be careful! Each action space can only be used once per round. The space where you originally moved your die will still be considered used. Costs: If you’re the second player to place a die in this location (in a 2 or 3 player game) or the third player (in a 4 or 5 player game), you’ll need to pay 2 pounds.
Example: I start by moving my die onto the first action space. Then, I move it onto the Ticket space. Since the first dice space is already occupied, I move my die onto the middle dice space. It’s currently Autumn 1850, so I earn 4 victory points for the year and an additional 6 victory points for the value of my die. To show that my die is locked in place for the rest of the game, I place a Ticket on top of it.
Now, let’s talk about the available Location actions:
- Only 4 or 5 player games allow you to perform this action. When you choose to do so, you can get a new die in your player color from the supply, but it will cost you 2 pounds. This die can be used just like your other dice starting from phase 1 of the next round.
In the Assistant space, you have the power to do two Assistant actions. When you use your first action to place an Assistant on the Black Market, it won’t cost you anything. However, if you decide to place an Assistant on the Black Market with your second action, you will need to pay the regular price.
As a reward, you will receive two Gears from the supply.
Additionally, you will also get a new die in your player color from the supply, as long as there are some left. This new die can be used alongside your other dice, starting in Phase 1 of the next round.
I’ll start by explaining how to exchange one die for victory points in the game of Crystal Palace. This is an important move that can help you gain an advantage. First, you need to move your die from the Ticket space to the leftmost free dice space below it. Once you do that, you will receive a number of victory points based on the current year and the value of the die. Make sure to look at the number indicated underneath the current year.
The die will stay on that space for the rest of the game and cannot be used again. To make things clear, grab a Ticket from the Ticket space and place it on top of the die. This will remind you that the die is no longer in play. Keep in mind that if all dice spaces are occupied after 3 or 4 rounds, you won’t be able to use the Ticket space anymore.
Moving on, let’s talk about Waterloo Station. This is another important element in the game that you should understand.
The train station is your lifeline, ensuring a continuous flow of resources and spreading advertisements for your cause far and wide. Just like at the other locations, I’ll move my die to the leftmost action space that hasn’t been used yet. Depending on the location, I might get a bonus or have to pay a fee. Action: Now, I can move my die again to any of the available action spots at the different locations. Each action spot can only be used once per round. But remember, the spot where my die was initially placed is considered used. Here are the available actions at each location:
- I can get 2 energy from the supply.
I’m gonna tell you about a cool game called Crystal Palace. In this game, you can do some really neat things to help you win. Let me explain a couple of them to you.
First, there’s something called Phase 6 bonuses. When you take an action in this phase, you get 1 energy and you can use one of your permanent bonuses one time. These bonuses can be things like a Research tile on your player mat or a bonus space on the Black Market where you have an Assistant placed.
Next, there’s the Buzz track. Every time you take an action, you can gain 1 energy and advance 2 steps on the Buzz track. It’s a great way to keep moving forward and stay in the game.
Now, I should mention that these actions I just told you about are only available in a game with 4 or 5 players. So if you’re playing with fewer people, you won’t be able to do these specific actions. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of other things you can do to win.
Crystal Palace is a really fun game that lets you strategize and make smart choices to come out on top. If you enjoy games that challenge your mind and keep you on your toes, you should definitely give it a try. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
For instance: I move my piece to the first action space, and then to the left action. I gain 2 energy.
Step 4: Paying Salaries and Utilizing Character Skills
When it comes to paying the salaries of your Character cards, it all depends on how far you’ve progressed in Westminster. The specific salary amount is indicated at the bottom of each Character card that you own.
To determine the salary to pay, simply match the color on the Character card with the position of your player marker in Westminster, and pay the corresponding amount into the supply. Remember, you must pay for all the characters you have. If you don’t have enough money, you’ll be required to take a loan.
Once you’ve paid the salaries, you can now make use of the character abilities, which are shown next to the orange phase 4 banner. Typically, everyone can simultaneously utilize these abilities, but if there’s any doubt, just continue following the player order.
Example: So here’s what I’ve figured out about the situation. Since we’re in space II A of Westminster, I have to fork over 6 pounds to compensate our characters. I’ll split it evenly, giving 3 pounds to both Holmes and Bronte. But here’s the thing: I only have 5 pounds left in my pocket. So, I’ll take 1 of our newspapers and exchange it for 1 more solitary pound. That way, I’ll have enough to cover the expenses without having to borrow any money. Smart move, right? Alright, with that taken care of, we can now move on to phase 4 and unleash the powers of our Character cards.
Let’s start with Holmes’ ability. Get this: every 2 newspapers we own, we gain 1 victory point. And guess what? We’ve got a whopping 4 newspapers! So, that means we’re getting a cool 2 victory points. Talk about a win-win situation!
Phase 5: Time to Bring Those Prototypes to Life
Now, this is where things start to get really exciting. It’s time for each of us to convert our Patents into Prototypes. But, here’s the catch: building a Prototype ain’t free. Nope, you gotta pay the costs listed on the upper-left corner of that snazzy red banner. So, gather up your funds, because we’re about to show everyone what we’re made of!
Note: I want to make sure you understand some important rules. You have the option to exchange pounds for energy or gear. For example, you can trade 4 pounds for 1 energy or 5 pounds for 1 gear. If you need some extra pounds, you can take a loan. Remember, you can do this anytime.
Now, let’s talk about building Prototypes. You can only build 2 Prototypes each round. Before the next player takes their turn, you need to announce that you’ll be building 2 Prototypes. This is important, so everyone knows what’s happening.
Note: Pay attention to the player order during this phase. The card effects are triggered right after the Prototype-building, and they can affect other players too. So, keep an eye on the player order.
During your turn in this phase, you can use your character abilities. These abilities are displayed next to a blue phase 5 banner. Make sure to take advantage of these abilities to help you in the game.
After you’ve used your character abilities, you will receive victory points based on the blue banner in the upper right corner. The number of victory points will depend on the year shown on the Round Tracker.
If you check to see if one or two of your characters are linked to the built Prototype, you’ll earn an extra 4 victory points per linked character.
After that, the effect at the bottom of the card kicks in. You get to play the entire effect on a player of your choice, which could be you as well. This player has to follow through with all the effects, both positive and negative. If you don’t have enough pounds to pay off a negative amount completely, you might have to take a loan. (You can find out how to take a loan on page 22 in the section about loans).
Once that’s done, flip the card over and place it on its backside in the bottom right corner next to your player mat. (You always get to keep the Prototype card, even if you played the effects on someone else).
To start, let’s place some more Prototype cards so that they overlap the right side of the previous card. You can own as many Prototype cards as you’d like.
Once everyone has had their turn to build up to 2 Prototypes, we move on to the next phase.
Phase 6: Income, Permanent Effects, and the Buzz Track
This phase mainly involves administrative effects. Let’s go through these effects step by step, following the player order if there’s any confusion.
- Receive income: You’ll receive some pounds from the supply depending on where your player token is on the income track. If your token is on the space with the -1 victory point, you’ll lose 1 victory point.
- Special expenses: When you encounter special expenses, you will need to move your player token three steps down the income track. However, if your token has already reached the lowest space on the track, you will need to pay 1 pound to the bank for each step you cannot go down. In some cases, you may need to take a loan to cover these expenses.
- Permanent effects with a green banner: Utilize all of your permanent effects that have a green phase 6 banner. These effects can be found on Research tiles on your player mat, as well as to the right of your Assistants on the Black Market, and potentially on the Pocket Watch.
- Buzz track: Take advantage of the bonuses you receive through your Buzz tokens placed on posters.
Phase 7: Preparation for the Next Round
After each round, follow these steps to prepare for the next round. However, please note that the game will end after phase 6 when you reach round 5 (Spring 1851).
