It was a hub of trade and happiness until something unexpected happened – a sudden downfall. You see, without strong leadership, this once thriving port fell into a state of catastrophe.

And guess what? Fierce creatures sensed this vulnerability and started swarming in. Chaos and destruction followed in their wake – it was a real disaster. Trolls went on an attacking spree, terrorizing the town. Draugr haunted villages nearby, causing fear and panic. Travelers and merchants were not spared either, as monsters viciously attacked them on the roads.

Getting Started with the Game

Let’s begin by setting up the game board. Find a spot in the middle of the table and place the game board there. It will be our center of action.

Next, we need to set the round marker. This will help us keep track of which round we are currently playing. Put the round marker in the space that says “Round 1.”

Now, let’s get the Market Stall tiles ready. These tiles provide different options for us to explore during the game. Shuffle the Market Stall tiles and place them face-up in the empty spaces on the board. The number of players participating will determine how many tiles we need.

  • If there are 2 players, we will need 1 Military Tile and 1 Economic Tile.
  • If there are 3 players, we will need 1 Military Tile and 2 Economic Tiles.
  • If there are 4 players, we will need 2 Military Tiles and 2 Economic Tiles.

Any extra Market Stall tiles can go back in the box for now.

First, I’ll tell you where to place the Small and Large Public Longships. Put them on the spaces that match their size on the board. The Private Longships go off to the side near the Shipwright’s Hut, but if you’re playing with fewer players than shown, put the Private Longships marked 3+ and 4+ back in the box.

Next, you’ll need to shuffle a bunch of cards. These include the Rune Cards, Destiny Cards, Merchant Ship Cards, Troll Cards, Draugr Cards, Journey Cards, and Monster Cards. Once shuffled, put them on their respective spots on the board.

Now, let’s get all the game pieces ready. Put the Food, Wood, Viking Warriors (Swordsman Dice, Spearmen Dice, & Axemen Dice), Coins, Favor tokens, and Blame tokens near the board where everyone can reach them.

Lastly, we need to determine who goes first. The player who has most recently earned glory in battle gets the First Player Marker. If there’s no battle hero among us, we can just randomly select the starting player.

So here’s how it works: each player takes turns choosing a Viking Leader Board. Starting with the player to the right of the start player, we go counter-clockwise.

When you choose a Viking Leader Board, it tells you what special ability your leader has, as well as how many Viking Warriors you can have.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When we play the game, each of us will choose the color we want and get some starting resources: 1 Food, 1 Wood, 1 Coin, 1 Favor token, and 1 Swordsman Die.

Next, we will put a disc on the scoreboard and another one on our player board to show our chosen color. We’ll also put a worker meeple in the general supply (we can earn more by using the Worker Huts location), and keep the rest in our personal supply (4 in a two-player game). Any extra worker meeples go back in the box.

Finally, we each get a random Destiny Card, and then we can start playing.

How to Play

The game has 8 rounds. During each round, we send our workers into town to gather weapons and supplies. We need these to defend against the enemies outside the walls.

Hey there! Are you ready to join me on an exciting journey to the land of Viking Warriors? In this game, we’ll have the chance to fight off Trolls, battle Draugr, and hunt down powerful Monsters that threaten our town and ships.

Now, here’s the deal – most locations on the board can only be occupied by one worker per round. So, if there’s something you want, you better send your worker there first!

When we reach the end of the eighth round, the player who has earned the most Glory will be crowned the winner of the game.

Ready for Action

Let me break it down for you. When we play a round of Champions of Midgard, we’ll follow the steps laid out in the top right corner of the game board. This handy guide will help us navigate through the game and serve as a helpful reminder during our play sessions. Let’s go through the steps below.

Setting the Stage

When I’m getting ready to start a new round, I make sure that I have everything I need. I need to make sure that the board and card locations are all set up correctly. It’s important to pay close attention to the blue board locations because they need some special attention.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Alright, here’s what you gotta do:

First off, take the top card from the Troll Deck and put it in the Troll Space on the board. Make sure you put it face-up.

Now, let me tell you a bit more about this. See, the Troll Space is where you’ll find the card that’s causing all the trouble. It’s right there for everyone to see, so you gotta keep an eye on it.

By doing this, you’re setting the stage for some serious adventure. The Troll Space is like the starting point of your journey. It’s where things get real and the excitement begins.

So, get that card in the Troll Space and get ready for some wild times. You never know what’s gonna happen, but one thing’s for sure – it’s gonna be a thrilling ride!

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When playing the game, I need to follow a few simple steps. First, I place the top 2 cards of the Draugr Deck face-up in the Draugr Spaces on the board. This is an essential part of the game that sets the stage for further actions.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Alright, listen up! We’ve got a job to do. Grab those Journey Cards and let’s get this show on the road. Here’s what we’re gonna do: take those cards and put one on each empty Journey Space on the board. Easy, right?

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Got your Runesmith Location all set up? Good. Now it’s time to dive into the fun part – placing the Rune Cards! Here’s what you need to do:

1. First, make sure you have 4 empty spaces next to the Runesmith Location. These spaces are reserved for the Rune Cards.

2. Take your deck of Rune Cards and shuffle it thoroughly, mixing up the cards so that no specific order is maintained.

3. Now, one by one, place 1 Rune Card face-up in each of the empty spaces next to the Runesmith Location. This will create a lineup of Rune Cards for you to work with.

And that’s it! With these Rune Cards in place, you’re all set to start your mystical journey. So go ahead, explore the exciting world of runes, and uncover the hidden meanings they hold.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When we’re playing the game, one of the things we need to do is place a Monster Card face-up in each empty Monster Space on the board. It’s important to note that in a 4-player game, the rightmost Journey Space and Monster Space are used as well. So, make sure you keep that in mind while playing and follow this rule. It’s just one of the many steps we take to make the game more interesting and enjoyable. Have fun!

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Step 6: Let’s find out what’s in store for us by revealing the top Merchant Ship Card! This card will go on top of any others that have already been revealed.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Step 7: I’m going to add one Viking Warrior to each of the Swordsmith, Hafter, and Blacksmith locations. Oh, and I’ll also put one Food in the Smokehouse location.

By the way, the Blue locations always get an extra item every round, even if they’re already occupied. It’s a nice little bonus that can make those spots more appealing in future rounds.

Worker Placement

During this part of the game, I’ll take turns placing my workers on different spots on the board and making things happen. Most spots can only fit one worker at a time.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let me walk you through how this game works. It’s pretty simple, I promise!

So, to start, the player with the First Player Marker goes first. From there, each player takes turns placing one worker at a time on an open space on the board and doing the action that goes with it. Just keep going in a clockwise direction until no one has any workers left.

Once that’s done, it’s time to assign Viking Warriors. But don’t worry, I’ll explain that too!

The board has different colored spaces, and each color tells you how to resolve that space. It’s all about making things clear and easy to understand.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When you put your worker meeple on a brown location, something happens right away. The instructions for that location are carried out immediately. It’s like pressing a button and seeing an instant response.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let’s talk about those blue locations in the game. You might have noticed that they look a little different from the rest. That’s because they’re considered special and get extra attention when we’re setting up for each round.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Combat locations are marked in red on the map. These places are where battles happen. When you put one of your workers on a combat location, you are claiming it for a fight with the monster that belongs to that spot in the next phase – Assign Viking Warriors and Resolve Combat.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Just so you know, Public Longships are special places that have both brown and red colors. They have 1 effect that happens right away, and another effect that happens when we assign Viking Warriors and resolve combat.

I’ll explain all that in more detail below.

The board has lots of different places, and each one has different effects. I’ll tell you about them so you can understand what all the symbols mean.

Some places let you get Viking Warrior Dice or collect resources like Food, Wood, Coins, Favor, and Blame. You can get as much of those as you want! But Viking Warrior Dice have a limit. You can only have 8 at a time, and you’ll see a picture of a longhouse on your Viking Leaderboard to help you keep track.

If I ever have more than 8 Viking Warriors, I’ll take as many dice as I can and give the extra ones back. I can’t have warriors without enough space for them in my longhouse!

Using Locations for Worker Placement

Using Market Stalls for Worker Placement

Assigning Viking Warriors

Now it’s time for me to assign my Viking Warrior Dice. If I placed a worker on a Combat Location – like a Troll Card Location, a Draugr Card Location, or the Longships – I get to assign my dice. But remember, we all do this at the same time.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you want to send Viking Warriors to fight the Troll, you should put them on the Troll Card.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When it comes to battling Draugrs, the experts – Viking Warriors – should be positioned directly on their matching Draugr Card.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I think about longships, I imagine these incredible vessels that carry Viking warriors to faraway lands to battle monstrous creatures. It’s an adventure unlike any other, and in order to embark on this journey, I have to make some important decisions.

First, I need to decide how much food and how many Viking warrior dice to assign to each longship. These dice represent the resources and strength needed for the voyage. It’s crucial to plan carefully and not exceed the capacity of each ship.

If I have any Viking warriors left after making my assignments, I can send them out to hunt for more food. It’s a way to make the most of my available resources and ensure that we have enough provisions for the journey.

But it’s not just about resources and strength. Some enemies we may encounter have special combat restrictions. We need to consider these limitations and come up with strategies to overcome them.

Preparing for a longship voyage requires a combination of careful planning, resource management, and strategic thinking. It’s an exciting and challenging endeavor that will test my skills as a leader. Are you ready to join me on this epic adventure?

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If an enemy has a symbol that says “no swords/axes/spears,” you can’t choose a Viking Warrior of that type to fight against that enemy. You can still send any other type of Viking Warrior on a longship to face the enemy, but the prohibited Warriors will be destroyed by the enemy before the first round of combat. They won’t get to participate and will be discarded without being rolled.

You’re allowed to assign no dice to a combat location if you want.

Once all players have finished assigning their Viking Warriors, we move on to Combat Resolution.

Sometimes it might be advantageous for a player to wait and see what their opponents do before assigning their Viking Warrior dice. If that happens, any player can ask to resolve this phase in turn order, starting with the player who goes first and then proceeding clockwise.

The Battle Results

In the Battle Results stage, we go through the following steps:

1. First off, if you decided to send your workers to the Hunting Grounds, it’s time to see what you’ve caught. Roll all your dice that you didn’t use for other actions and count how many enemies you’ve hit. Each hit translates to one unit of Food. However, keep in mind that there is a limit of 6 units of Food, even if you hit more enemies.

2. Moving on, if you sent Viking Warriors to fight the fearsome Troll, get ready for an epic clash! The Viking Warriors and the Troll engage in combat until one side emerges victorious. It’s a battle for the ages!

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Blame: If the Troll isn’t killed by any player, we all get a Blame token in the round clean-up. Blame doesn’t look good in the end, as it decreases our Glory. However, if someone manages to kill the Troll, they can get rid of one of their Blame tokens (if they have any) and make someone else take one Blame token from the supply. The townsfolk can be quite fickle when it comes to who they appreciate or criticize for protecting them.

Step 3: Now, starting with the left Draugr and moving to the right Draugr, all players who have sent Viking Warriors to attack the Draugr Card(s) must resolve combat against them. However, if no player has assigned Viking Warriors to fight the Draugr, we move on to the next step.

First things first, let’s talk about how we resolve our journeys and fight off those pesky Monsters. It’s pretty straightforward, but here’s a step-by-step breakdown, starting from the leftmost distant shore location and moving towards the rightmost one:

  1. We reveal the Journey Card and see what it has in store for us. This card’s got some cool effects, which you can learn more about in the rules appendix. If the card says we have to lose something, we gotta take it from our Warriors and Food on the Longship. Oh, and even if we didn’t assign any Warriors to a Longship at a distant shore location, we still reveal and discard the Journey Card.
  2. In order to keep my Viking Warriors well-fed, I need to make sure I have enough Food in the longship. The locations that are closest to the left edge of the board require less Food because they are closer to the port. For these shorter journeys, 1 Food will feed 2 Viking Warriors.

What Happens in Combat?

When it comes to combat, whether I’m fighting against Trolls, Draugr, Krakens, or other Monsters, the process is the same. Each enemy has an Attack Value and a Defense Value. To defeat them, I need to inflict damage equal to or greater than their Defense Value – this is known as delivering lethal damage.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

In combat, I roll my Viking Warrior dice to try and hurt the enemy. But here’s the twist: while I’m attacking, the enemy is also attacking me! So even if I defeat them, I still get hurt in the process. The fight continues until one of these things happens:

  • The enemy gets defeated.
  • All of my Viking Warrior dice are defeated.

Here’s how a round of combat plays out:

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Ready to unleash your Viking warriors and engage in epic battles? With the roll of the dice, you can command your fearless troops and confront your enemies head-on. It’s time to tap into your strategic prowess and decide how many dice to allocate for this fight. But be warned – the outcome will depend on the forces you summon and how well you can anticipate your foe’s moves. Victory is within reach, and your dice hold the key to unlocking it.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

(Optional) If you want to change your dice roll, you can discard 1 Favor token to reroll some or all of the dice you just rolled. You can do this more than once if you have multiple Favor tokens and you want to use them.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

So, here’s the deal. When you roll the dice and get a Weapon Result, you’re gonna put a Damage token on the enemy’s card. Simple as that. Oh, and some of the dice faces show two weapons, which means you get two hits instead of just one. Pretty neat, huh?

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I face an enemy, I remove Viking Warrior dice from my pool. I take out as many dice as the enemy’s Attack Value. But, for each Shield Result I roll, I get to keep one of my dice. This means that my losses are reduced by one for each Shield Result that I roll.

Next, I need to check if I have dealt lethal damage to the enemy. Here’s what I need to do:

  • If the enemy’s Health Value is equal to or less than 5, I have dealt lethal damage.
  • If the enemy’s Health Value is greater than 5, I have not dealt lethal damage.

It’s important to keep in mind that the Viking Warrior dice are a double-edged sword. While they allow me to discard dice equal to the enemy’s Attack Value, I can also reduce my losses by rolling Shield Results. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for success in battle.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

  1. If I manage to deal enough damage to defeat the enemy, I get to take the enemy card and receive my well-deserved reward. My brave Viking Warriors will return to my personal supply, ready for the next battle! For example, let’s say I defeat the enemy and it’s worth 6 Glory and 4 Coins. I would move my marker on the score track ahead by 6 and gain 4 Coins from the supply. Oh, and I should keep the defeated enemy card face-down in a separate pile. I don’t need to reveal how many enemies I’ve defeated to my opponents.
  2. If I haven’t dealt enough damage to defeat the enemy, but I still have Viking Warriors left, don’t worry! I can start a new round of combat and give it another shot.
  3. However, if I haven’t defeated the enemy and I’ve run out of Viking Warriors, it means my warriors have been defeated, and I won’t receive any rewards. I should also remove any Damage tokens that were placed on the Monster.

All enemies give you Glory when you defeat them. defeating Trolls also gives you Wood, defeating Draugr gives you Coins, and defeating Monsters gives you Favor.

Cleanup

  1. Retrieve your workers from all locations. Put Public Longships back on the board and Private Longships in your play area.
  2. If the Troll was not defeated, remove the Troll Card and give each player 1 Blame token.
  3. Remove any undefeated Draugr Cards.
  4. Remove any revealed Journey Cards.
  5. Discarded Troll and Draugr cards go to the monster discard pile in the bottom right corner of the board.
  6. Add 1 Coin to each undefeated Monster card. This is an extra reward for the player who eventually defeats this Monster. Monsters can earn multiple Coins before they are defeated.

If I’m on Round 8, it’s time for the final scoring. If not, I’ll move the Round Marker and get ready for another round. Don’t forget to check the top right of the board for a quick reference to the game steps. And if you need help understanding the icons used in the game, there’s a reference card available. Happy playing!

The End of the Game

Once we reach the 8th Round, the game comes to an end, and it’s time for the final scoring. Let’s go through the steps together, starting with the player who is farthest behind on the Glory Track.

First, you need to organize your defeated Monsters and Draugrs by color and place them in front of you. Then, it’s time to calculate your score using the following criteria:

  • How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMessDestiny Cards – If you meet the requirements of a Destiny Card that you have, you have fully fulfilled your destiny and earn a larger Glory bonus. If you tie with someone else for the requirements, you have only partially realized your potential and earn a smaller Glory bonus. You can only earn Glory for your own Destiny Cards. Fulfilling or tying with another player’s Destiny Card doesn’t give you any Glory, it just stops them from getting it. You need to have at least 1 of the necessary items to satisfy a Destiny Card.
  • How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMessEnemies Set (1 of each color) – You impress the townspeople by facing different combat challenges! You’ll earn 5 Glory for each complete set. Note that Trolls don’t have a color and won’t count for end game scoring.
  • How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMessRunes (used or unused) – Runes represent power and each card has a specific amount of Glory associated with it.
  • How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMessPrivate Longships – Building different types of longships will earn you Glory and show off your high status.

When you play Champions of Midgard, there are some key elements that you need to understand. Let me break it down for you.

First, let’s talk about the Favor of the Gods. You see, in the game, you earn Favor tokens. These tokens are valuable because each one is worth 2 Glory at the end of the game. So, it’s important to hold on to your Favor tokens and not let them go to waste.

Next, we have Coins. In the game, you collect Coins as you play. These Coins are not only good for buying things, but they also help you score Glory. For every 3 Coins you have remaining at the end of the game, you get 1 Glory. So, the more Coins you have, the more Glory you can earn.

Now that you understand these elements, you can see how they add another layer of strategy and decision-making to the game. It’s not just about defeating monsters and completing quests, but also about managing your resources wisely to maximize your Glory.

So, remember, when you play Champions of Midgard, keep an eye on your Favor of the Gods and make sure to hold on to those valuable tokens. And don’t forget about your Coins – they may seem small, but they can make a big difference in your final score. Good luck!

Hey there! Guess what? I’ve got something important to share with you. It’s all about how people perceive you and the impact it can have on your reputation. It’s a pretty big deal, so let’s dive right in, shall we?

You know, there’s this thing called blame. It’s like a double-edged sword – it can either elevate you or drag you down. And when it comes to your reputation, that’s a big deal.

So, here’s the deal – blame can cause you to lose glory. And believe me, losing glory is never fun. But how exactly is it calculated? Well, lucky for you, I’ve got a handy chart that breaks it all down:

Reputation with Townsfolk
Glory Loss
Beloved No Glory Loss
Popular 1-5% Glory Loss
Neutral 5-15% Glory Loss
Disliked 15-25% Glory Loss
Reviled 25-50% Glory Loss

See, the amount of glory you lose depends on your reputation. If you’re beloved by the townsfolk, then lucky you! You won’t lose any glory at all. But if you’re not so popular, well, get ready to say goodbye to a chunk of your glory.

Overall, the meaning behind all this is pretty clear – your reputation matters. It’s important to understand how people perceive you, and how that perception can impact your standing in the world. So, take a moment to think about how you want to be seen by others. Are you beloved? Popular? Neutral? It’s up to you, my friend.

How to play Champions of Midgard Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I play Midgard, I strive to be the player who amasses the most Glory. That title, the Champion of Midgard, goes to the winner!

But what happens in the event of a tie? Well, the player who triumphed over the greatest number of enemies, including those pesky Trolls, takes the victory. And if there’s still a tie, we all celebrate together!

Variants

To make your Champions of Midgard experience even more unique, there are some optional variations to try out. These variants are best saved for when you’re more familiar with the game, so I recommend sticking to the basic rules for your first few rounds. Enjoy the game!

Variant #1 – Hall Of Records

The townsfolk in Midgard keep a record of all the valiant leaders and their battle achievements.

When you play with all the cards from defeated enemies revealed in front of you, it gives you more information to make strategic choices about Destiny Cards. This variant adds an extra layer of decision-making to the game.

In this alternative, called “Mistrustful Villagers,” the townspeople doubt anyone who wants to replace the old Jarl.

At the start of the game, each player receives a Blame token. This variation usually leads to a more exciting endgame, as there tend to be more Blame tokens in play.

The people of Midgard desperately needed someone to step up and make things right. And who better than you? In Champions of Midgard, you get to be a Viking Leader, on a mission to bring glory to your clan and fill the shoes of the old Jarl.

When playing the game, I need to follow a few simple steps. First, I place the top 2 cards of the Draugr Deck face-up in the Draugr Spaces on the board. This is an essential part of the game that sets the stage for further actions.

Have fun!
