Explorers & Pirates Game Rules
Ahoy there, mateys! Avast ye and listen up. I’m about to lay down the rules of the exhilarating game known as Explorers & Pirates. Get ready to set sail on a swashbuckling adventure!
Arrr, so here’s the scoop. In this game, you’ll be commanding your own crew of brave explorers as you navigate the treacherous waters of the open sea. Your mission? To discover new lands, uncover hidden treasures, and establish prosperous settlements. But beware, me hearties, for danger lurks around every bend!
Now, let me break it down for you. First things first, each player will start with their own ship, ready to explore. You’ll take turns, moving your ship across the board in search of uncharted territory. As you sail, you’ll encounter different types of tiles – islands, gold fields, and foggy areas. Each tile holds its own surprises, matey.
When you reach an island, you have the chance to establish a settlement. This not only earns you valuable victory points but also allows you to gain resources like gold, goods, and fish. These resources are essential for expanding your crew and developing your settlements into flourishing cities.
But watch out for the foggy areas, me matey. They may seem mysterious and alluring, but they can also bring danger. The fog hides hidden dangers, like pirates and sea monsters, just waiting to raid your ships and plunder your riches. It’s a perilous gamble, but the rewards can be great if you dare to venture into the unknown.
In addition to the main game board, there are also scenario boards that add exciting new challenges and objectives to the game. These scenarios vary in difficulty and complexity, offering endless possibilities for adventure. You can choose to play a single scenario or combine multiple ones for a truly epic gaming experience.
As you sail the seas and encounter different events and challenges, you’ll need to make strategic decisions that can make or break your success. Will you focus on expanding your settlements, or will you take a risk and explore uncharted lands? The choice is yours, but remember, me hearties, fortune favors the bold!
So gather your crew, grab your compass, and prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime. Explorers & Pirates awaits, me matey, and the high seas are calling your name. Get ready to set sail and make your mark in the annals of history. Yo-ho-ho, let the adventure begin!

This is it, the final scenario in this expansion. And let me tell you, it’s a big one. We’ve got three missions packed into this one: “Pirate Lairs,” “Fish for Catan,” and “Spices for Catan.” Trust me, it’s gonna be a blast!
Alright, let’s get this show on the road. First things first, let’s set up the game board frame. If you’ve already got the board from scenario 4 all set, then awesome! Just use that as a guide to extend the frame like this: add the B1 frame pieces to the edge. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. You’re gonna want to use sea hex E to fill the gap between hex D2 and the sea hex piece F1.
Moving on, grab sea hex piece G and place it to the right of sea hex piece F2. To fill the gap between sea hex pieces G and A2, use one of the orange sun-backed sea hexes with the sea side facing up. Unless, of course, you want to mix things up a bit, in which case, feel free to build the frame your own way. But if you’d rather stick to the tried-and-true method, just follow the example below.
That’s it for the setup! Now, we’re ready for some serious adventuring. Good luck out there!
Let’s Get The Starting Island Ready!
We’ll start by shuffling the terrain hexes we’ve chosen for the starting island. Then, we’ll place them randomly in the designated area, making sure the terrain side is facing up. Once that’s done, it’s time to arrange the number tokens just like in the example.
Putting Together The Unexplored Areas
Before we begin exploring, we need to make sure the unexplored areas are ready. We’ll remove one sea hex from the green moon-backed standard hexes. Then, we’ll combine the remaining 7 standard hexes with 3 fish hexes, 3 spice hexes, and 3 pirate lair hexes. We’ll shuffle them all together and place them, with the green moon icon facing up, in the northern unexplored area. We’ll do the same with the orange sun-backed hexes, but this time in the southern unexplored area.
Let’s Get Set Up!
Now it’s time for each player to gather their pieces. Look below to see which pieces are yours.
Alright, here’s what you need to do:
So, grab the “Pirate Lairs”, “Spices for Catan”, and “Fish for Catan” mission cards and the corresponding VP cards and put them right next to the game board. Easy enough, right? Now each of you takes one of your markers and sticks it on the “S” space of the mission cards. Got it so far? Good.
Next, take those 24 spice sacks and put them beside the game board. They’re gonna come in handy later on. And don’t forget about the 6 fish hauls! Yep, put those beside the game board too. We’re almost there.
Finally, take the 6 pirate lair tokens and shuffle ’em up, number side down. Once they’re all mixed up, go ahead and make a nice little stack of ’em beside the game board. Phew, that was a lot of steps, but we made it!
The Quests
Yes, there are three thrilling quests waiting for you to embark on – “Pirate Lairs,” “Fish for Catan,” and “Spices for Catan.”
Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through every step of these adventures using the game rules in the scenarios.
The Grand Finale
Picture this: it’s your turn, and if you manage to rack up 17 victory points, you emerge as the conqueror of “Explorers & Pirates.”
