We’re going to play a game where we take turns placing cards in either our hometown or the capital.
When you place a card in the capital, you get to do something special. But if you place a card in your hometown, it will earn you points at the end of the game. So, you have to decide which one is more important.
Here’s the catch: at the end of each round, the total value of a color in your hometown can’t be higher than that color’s value in the capital. If it is, you’ll lose those cards. So, you have to be careful not to get too greedy!
After three rounds, we’ll add up all the points and see who has the most. That person will be the winner!
Setting Up the Game

- First, we need to place the 4 Capital Cards in the middle of the table, facing up.
- Next, we’ll shuffle the Profession Cards and create a face-down Deck next to the capital cards. Take the top card from the deck and place it face up on the corresponding Capital Card. Look for the special action symbol on top of the capital card.
- Now, it’s time to shuffle the Modifier Cards and deal one card to each player. The player with the highest value (+4 is the highest, and -3 is the lowest) becomes the Starting Player for the first round. After that, we’ll collect the cards again, shuffle them, and place them in a face-down deck next to the capital cards.
- Lastly, let’s put the Gold Discs in a pile next to the modifier cards.
Playing the Game
When you play the game, you’ll go through 3 rounds. Each round has 3 steps, and you do them in the order I’ll explain.
1. Picking Cards
In the first step, the person who starts the round gives each player a set number of profession cards:
- If there are 2-3 players, each player gets 6 profession cards
- If there are 4 players, each player gets 5 profession cards
Everyone chooses 2 cards from their hand and puts them face-down in front of them. Once all players have chosen their cards, they pass the rest of their cards to the person on their left.
Then, the process repeats: every player picks 2 more cards and passes the remaining card(s) to the person on their left. The player who receives the final card(s) keeps them.
Welcome to the game! Let’s get started. First, everyone takes their chosen cards. If there are 2-3 players, you’ll have 6 cards each. If there are 4 players, you’ll have 5 cards each.
Step 2: Play Cards
The Starting Player goes first, and then we take turns clockwise.
On your turn, you must play one card from your hand face up.
- You can play the card into your HOMETOWN, which is in front of you.
- Or, you can play the card into the CAPITAL, which is in the middle of the table.
If you play a card into the CAPITAL, you must immediately do the special action that corresponds to that card.
Remember, group cards of the same color together in your hometown and in the capital. Make sure the values on the cards are visible by overlapping them.

My take: So, I’m playing this game and I decide to put down a blue card in the Capital and take the agent action.
Extra Cool Moves

Hey there! When you play a card into the CAPITAL, you gotta do the special action that goes with it. Here are the special actions for the Scholar (green) cards:
Scholar (green)

When you play this game, one of the things you do is draw a profession card. This card is important because it tells you what profession you have and gives you special abilities. To get a profession card, you have to draw the top card from the deck and put it in your hand. But if the deck is empty, you don’t get a card.
Merchant (yellow)

So here’s what you can do: take a gold disc from the pile and put it in your play area. But if the pile is empty, then too bad, you don’t get a gold disc.
I’m talking about the Agent (the blue one)

When you play Capital Lux, one of the actions you can take is drawing a card from the modifier deck. This card gives you special abilities or altered effects for your actions. To do this, you simply draw the top card from the deck and take a look at it. However, be careful not to show it to anyone else. After you’ve seen the card, place it face down on top of one of the capital cards. But remember, if the modifier deck is empty, you don’t get to draw a card.
If you’re playing as the Cleric (the pink player), you have a special ability. You can take the lowest valued blue, yellow, or green card from the Capital and place it face up in your HOMETOWN.
Here’s an example of how this works. Let’s say Bob is the Agent, and he secretly looks at a modifier card. Based on what he sees, he decides to place it above the Merchant. |
Mary, who is playing as the Cleric, has a different ability. She chooses to take a blue card. So, she looks at the blue cards in the Capital and takes the one with the lowest value. Then, she places this card into her hometown. |
The round ends after these actions are taken.
Hey there! Let me explain what happens when a player runs out of cards in our game. It’s pretty interesting, so stay with me!
So, when one player doesn’t have any more cards left at the end of their turn, all the other players still get to have one more turn before the round officially ends. It’s like a bonus round, you know?
But wait, there’s a little twist. After everyone has taken their last turn, any cards that are still in a player’s hand have to be placed face up in their HOMETOWN. It’s like a little reminder of the game that was. Okay, now let’s move on to the next step.
It’s Time to Check Limits and Discard Cards
- First, we need to take a look at any modifier cards that are sitting on top of the capital cards. Those cards can change things up a bit, so we definitely want to reveal them.
- Next, each player has to compare the total value of each color in their HOMETOWN with the total value of that color in the CAPITAL. It’s like a little math exercise, but don’t worry, it’s not too complicated.
Hey, here’s something important to note. Those modifier cards I mentioned earlier? Yeah, they can actually increase or decrease the total value for a specific color in the Capital. So, they have the power to change things up a bit!
So, here’s the deal: When it comes to colors, you need to keep an eye on your hometown’s total value and compare it to the capital’s total value. If your hometown’s total value is higher, then you have to say goodbye to all the cards of that color from your hometown.
Now, let’s talk about gold. If you go over the limit in any color, don’t panic just yet. You have the option to spend some gold discs to make up for the difference and avoid discarding cards.
Here’s how it works: For every disc you spend, your limit in one color increases by 1. And don’t worry about those used discs, they go back into the gold pile.
For example, let’s say you need to discard blue and yellow cards because you went over the limit. Instead of losing those cards, you can discard 3 discs and keep them. The only card you absolutely have to say goodbye to is the pink one.
Now, let’s talk about bonus cards.
Here’s the deal: For each color, the player with the highest total value in their hometown gets a special treat. They get to snatch the highest valued card in that color from the capital as a bonus card. Sweet deal, right?
When it comes to ties, we need to establish a fair way to determine the winner. In this case, if two players have the same score, we follow a specific rule. The player who was first in the turn order gets the highest card. Then, the player who comes next in the turn order gets the second highest card, if there is one, and so on.
To make things interesting, there is also a bonus card. It’s important to keep this card face down in front of you, not in your hometown. This bonus card will give you extra points at the end of the game.

So, here’s what happened: John, Mary, and Bob all have the same total value in yellow cards from their hometown. Since John was the first to play, he gets a bonus card valued at 6.
Mary, who is sitting to the left of John, takes the card valued at 4. Unfortunately, there are no more yellow cards left in the capital, so Bob doesn’t get a bonus card.
Getting Ready for the Next Round
Here’s what you need to do to prepare for the next round:
- Shuffle all 4 modifier cards again and create a new deck.
- The player with the highest total value of cards (including all colors) in their hometown becomes the starting player in the next round. Bonus cards don’t count towards this total.
Just a heads up: Keep all the remaining cards in the capital and in the players’ hometowns for the next round.
End of the Game
Once the 3rd round is over, the game comes to an end. Now it’s time to tally up everyone’s final points:
- Scholar: If you play a green card in the capital as your last card, the round doesn’t end. Instead, you have to immediately draw a new card from the deck.
- Rare case: At the start of the third round, if there aren’t enough cards left in the deck to give each player a full hand, deal out the remaining cards equally among the players.
So you want to know how to win the game, huh? Well, let me break it down for you. The score is determined by three things: the value of the cards left in your hometown, any bonus cards you’ve won, and one point for each unused gold disc. Simple enough, right?
Now, here’s the deal. The player with the highest score wins. But what if there’s a tie? Well, in that case, the player with the most cards of value 6 wins. If it’s still a tie, then we look at the number of cards of value 5, then 4, and so on. It’s all about those high-value cards, my friend.
Oh, and just to clear up any confusion, let me give you a couple of clarifications. First, there’s no limit to the number of modification cards you can play above each color in the capital. Go wild with those modifications, my friend. And second, when you play a pink card in the capital, you can’t choose another pink card. Nope, you’ve got to pick one of the other colors and take the lowest valued card of that color into your hometown. Gotta keep things interesting, right?
So there you have it, my friend. To win the game, you gotta rack up those points by managing your cards and grabbing those high-value ones. Good luck!
