Object of the Game

In Caper, you get to create your very own crew of Thieves by playing Thief and Gear cards. The game has six rounds, and in each one, you’ll work to outsmart your opponents and collect as much loot as possible.

When it’s time to play Caper, I have two important rounds to think about – the Thief Round and the Gear Round. In the Thief Round, I get to choose different Thieves to place at the Locations we’re using for the game. It’s like building my team of expert thieves, each with their own special skills and abilities.

But then comes the Gear Round, where I have to think strategically. I can place Gear cards on my Thieves to make them even more influential at a specific Location. It’s all about boosting their power and increasing their chances of success.

Here’s the catch – after playing a card, my opponent and I swap hands. So I have to consider whether it’s worth giving my opponent a powerful card or if I should keep it for myself. It adds a whole new level of decision-making and anticipation.

The goal is to have the most Capers at a Location, which means I have to outsmart my opponent and claim the valuable steal. And it’s not just about winning the steal – some Thieves and Gear also have special Abilities that can earn me Points and give me an advantage.

As you play, keep an eye on your Stolen Goods collection. The game will track the Points you earn from them. Remember, the player who amasses the most Points by the end of the game will emerge as the ultimate winner. Will it be you?

Choose Your City. Look for City icons at the bottom left of Thieves, Gear, and Location cards. You have three Cities to choose from: Paris, Rome, or London.

Put the cards from the other Cities back in the box. You won’t need them for this game. Here’s some information to help you decide, with more *’s meaning a City is more advanced.

If this is your first game, we suggest starting in Paris.

• Paris: With all the beautiful art, you’ll find plenty of stolen goods.
• Rome: There’s a rich history of crime here, so expect more exciting capers.
• London: As a major global hub, London is the perfect place to deplete your opponent’s coin supply.

Get the Decks Ready. Take the cards for each city and organize them into separate decks: Locations, Thieves, and Gear. Shuffle each deck individually and place them on the table.

Pick the 3 Spots. Lay the 3 Spot Maps in a row between us, leaving some room between each one. If you want some help, check out the pink side of the Maps; otherwise, go with the wooden side.

Show a card from the Spots deck across each Map. We’ll place our Robbers and Gear cards on our side of these Spots as we play.

These Spots give us a clue about how the game will go because their Rewards are a big part of how we score Points.

Playing the Game

How the Game Works:

Caper is a fun game that you can play in six rounds. These rounds are split into two types: Thief Rounds and Gear Rounds.

Round Structure:

When it comes to keeping track of the current round, we use a wooden cube on the Round Tracker. It’s a simple but effective method. If you’re wondering how many cards you’ll be dealt during each round, just look at the number shown on the deck matching its Round Type. These cards will come in handy and be played during that particular round.

Let’s Begin a Round!

When we start a new round, we each get a set number of cards from the deck shown on the Round Tracker. These cards will make up our starting hand for the round.

If the color of the Round Tracker matches the top of your Mastermind card, congratulations! You get to be the First Player for this round.

In this game, we start with the Thief Round. Each player gets 4 cards from the Thieves deck.

The person who has the Cream Mastermind card is the first player.

Playing a Round

During a round, the first player puts a card face-up on their side at a Location. Then the other player does the same.

After both players have played a card, they switch their entire hand of cards. Then, the first player starts a new turn and they repeat the process.

Thief Round

A Thief card has to be placed at one of the three Locations next to its Location Mat. Thieves can’t go on top of other Thief or Gear cards.

So, here’s the deal. You know those sneaky Thieves? Well, get this – you can totally put one of them right beside another Thief at a place. But here’s the catch: a place can’t have more than three Thief cards. Rules, am I right?

Now, pay close attention to this part. If a Thief card happens to have an Income at the bottom, guess what? You get to line your pockets with some serious Coins! All you gotta do is play that Thief card and collect some sweet moolah from the Supply. Easy peasy.

How to Use Gear in the Game of Caper

When you have a Gear card in your hand, you have the option to either play it or discard it. If you choose to play it, you must decide where to place it. You can either place it below a Thief card or on top of another Gear card that is already below a Thief card. The important thing is to make sure that the icons and colors of the cards are still visible.

If you look below, you’ll see a Thief card. This card has a limit of three Gear cards that can be placed on it. Let’s say you have a Gear card in your hand, but instead of playing it, you can choose to discard it and get something from the Supply. But here’s the catch – some Gear cards have a Cost value shown in the top left corner. To play those cards, you need to pay that amount of Coins. If you don’t have enough Coins, you can’t play the card. However, you can still discard it and gain a Coin.

Mastering Icon Abilities

Caper features a variety of icons, and you’ll quickly become familiar with each one. These key icons play a crucial role in understanding and using the cards during gameplay.

When it comes to the game Capers, one of the key rules is that the player who has the most capers at a specific location will earn the reward associated with that location. This means that if you want to come out on top, you need to strategically gather as many capers as you can at each location.

Coins: You need coins to get cool stuff.

When you flip an opponent’s topmost card, something unexpected happens. It’s like peering into a hidden world, waiting to be discovered. The act of turning over that card holds all the excitement and mystery of a secret treasure. You never know what you might find! It’s a thrilling moment, full of anticipation and uncertainty.

Stolen Goods: There are three unique kinds of stolen goods that can earn you points by collecting sets.

So, it’s crucial to remember that these Map Markers are about the cards at that Location, not just the cards on a single Thief. They provide important information about who you should count when it comes to scoring points and making strategic moves. Understanding and interpreting these icons will give you a competitive edge in the game.

Equip Yourself: A Thief gets a bonus if it has 3 Gear cards on it.

Most cards give their benefits at the end of the game. However, icons that give Coins or flip cards activate when played. Remember, some Locations have Modifiers that can impact the cards played there.

Flipping Cards

When playing the game, there’s a rule that you should keep in mind about Thieves. You can only flip the topmost card on a Thief – the one that was played most recently. It means that if the top card on a Thief is already flipped, you can’t flip a card that’s underneath it.

Even if a Thief card is flipped, you can still place cards on it or on Gear cards following the usual restrictions. Flipped cards lose all their special abilities, but they don’t affect the bonus Caper – you can still earn it.

A flipped Thief card still counts as a Thief card when it comes to forming sets. Similarly, a flipped Gear card still counts as a gear card, but it loses its specific color.

At the End of the Round

At the end of each round, when every player has only two cards left in their hand, players will take their final turn for that round. When you’re left with just one card in your hand, you will have to discard it.

When I discard my last card, I don’t get a replacement. When we both have no cards left, the round is over. We move the wooden cube down on the Round Tracker and start a new round.

Remember: In Round 5, we only have 2 Thief cards, so it’s our first and last turn of that Round.

Discard Area: Players put their discarded cards horizontally and face up near their Reference Card, so there’s no confusion with cards in play.

I discard Thief cards to the left of the Reference, and Gear cards to the right. Some cards can bring back cards from the Discard Area, and that information is public.

When the final Gear Round arrives, the game comes to an end. To determine the winners of each Location, I need to count the number of players at each Location.

But wait, there’s more! Keep an eye out for any extra bonuses from Thieves who have 3 Gear cards. The player with the most Gear at a Location will be crowned the winner of that Location.

Here’s how you’ll know who won: I’ll turn the Location so the Rewards are right-side-up for the winner to see. However, if there’s a tie for the number of Capers, no one wins that Location and it remains untouched.

Turn the Location cards towards their rightful winners.

Scoring

Now it’s time for the scoring part! Using the Score board and wooden cubes, we’ll score each category one by one:

1. Let’s start by scoring Points from the Location Rewards
2. I can score points from Thief cards.
3. I can score points from Gear cards.
4. I can score points for sets of unique Stolen Goods.

Scoring Stolen Goods

There are 3 different types:

• A Jewel
• An Antique
• A Painting
• Wild (Can be any type)

I can form sets with my Stolen Goods received across all Locations. A set can contain 1, 2, or 3 Stolen Goods. If a set has more than one Stolen Good, then each Stolen Good in that set must be different.

The Champ

Once I’ve gone through each of these rows and tallied up all of my Points, I can finally crown myself the victorious champion of Caper! It’s always such a thrilling moment when I come out on top.

When it comes to ties during a game, it’s important to know that the player with the most wins will come out on top. However, if there is still a tie after considering the number of wins, the Cream Mastermind will be declared the winner.
