The goal is pretty simple – be the fastest to come up with a word that starts with the same letter as the picture on a card. Easy, right? Well, not so fast! You’ve gotta be careful not to stumble over your words as you race against the clock!

Setup

First, we need to decide who will be the first Blurbler. That person will receive a stack of cards and keep them face-down.

Role of the Referee

If you’re not playing in a race, you become a Referee.

As a Referee, you have the power to make important decisions:

• Is a word allowed? If a word is considered not allowed, the race will go on until someone wins with a word that is allowed.
• Who won the race? The winner is the first player who finishes saying an allowed word. If the Referees can’t agree or it’s a tie, neither player gets the card. Instead, we’ll put it aside and start a new race with the next card.

I’m the Referee, and I have the power to settle any disagreements. If there’s a dispute and I can’t make a decision, nobody wins the card. Instead, we’ll put it aside and start the race again with the next card. Now, let’s talk about how the game is played.

1. So, here’s the deal: The Blurbler, that’s me, puts the pile right smack in the middle, right between me and the player on my left. And guess what? You and that player are gonna race first, while everyone else becomes a Referee.

When I’m ready to start the first race, I quickly flip over the top card and slap it face-up on the table. Now, it’s your turn to race against me. We both have to quickly think of a word that starts with the same letter as the image on the card.

What Happens in the Next Races

Once we finish a race, I pass the stack of cards to the person sitting next to me, and we start again. This cycle goes on until I race each player at the table.

What Happens Next?

Once I’ve raced against each player, the player sitting to my left becomes the new Blurbler. We then start the next round from the beginning.

Choosing the Right Word

Here are a few rules you need to keep in mind when choosing a legal word:

• The word you choose must start with the same first letter as the image on the card. For example, if the image shows a “spoon,” your word must start with the letter “s”.
• Also, you can only win a race with a word once per game. Once your word wins, it can’t win again in the same game.

When Does the Game End?

• If we’re playing with 4-6 players, the game ends after each of us has been the Blurbler twice.
• With 7-8 players, the game ends after each of us has been the Blurbler once.

At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins! If there’s a tie, the youngest player takes the victory.

Playing with Younger Kids

Let me share with you two suggestions that can level the playing field for younger players when competing against older players. You can choose the one that suits you best.

Unlike older players, younger players don’t have to worry about using legal words. In fact, they can even win a race with an illegal word, as long as it starts with the same letter as the image on the card.

One option is to have younger players follow the regular rules, just like everyone else. However, you can introduce additional limitations for the types of words that older players can use.

For example, older players could be restricted to using only nouns or verbs. You could also require them to use words with at least six letters or words with a minimum of two syllables.

Rules Variants

• King of the Hill: In this variation, the winner of a race becomes the new Blurbler. The new Blurbler then races against the player to their left first. The first player to reach ten points wins.
• The Mastermind: In this version, if a player uses an illegal word during a race, any player can shout out a legal word and steal the race, even if they weren’t originally part of it.
• The Genius: This version adds additional restrictions to the criteria for legal words. For example, you could limit it to only nouns, verbs, words with a minimum of 6 letters, or words with a minimum of 2 syllables.
