So, let me explain how the game works. In Barenpark, you’ll start with an empty park board. Your goal is to fill it up with different types of bear enclosures and attractions. Each attraction has a unique shape and size, so you’ll have to plan carefully to make everything fit together.
At the beginning of the game, you’ll be given four park boards to choose from. Each board has a different layout and difficulty level. After you pick your board, you’ll receive a set of tetromino tiles. These tiles are like pieces of a puzzle that you’ll use to build your park.
On your turn, you’ll roll the die and choose one of the available pieces based on the results. Then, you’ll place it onto your park board, trying to cover as many icons as possible. - First, put the Supply Board in the middle of the game area. This is where you’ll keep the Green Areas, Animal Houses, and Enclosures.
- Next, stack the Green Areas on their assigned spots. Use all of the Toilets and Playgrounds, but only four Food Streets and four Rivers per player. Keep the rest of the Green Areas in the game box. You can check the Supply Board and the table below for the specific quantities.
In the game, you need to choose the right Animal Houses based on the number of players. This information is displayed on the Supply Board and in the table below. Keep the rest of the Animal Houses in the game box. You can identify the values on the tiles by looking for a diamond symbol with a white background.
So here’s what you do to play the game:
- First, stack the tiles based on their shape on the designated spaces. Make sure to sort them by number in each pile, from lowest at the bottom to highest at the top. For example, in a two-player game, each pile will have the tiles arranged as 6-4-2, from top to bottom.
- Next, place the Enclosures on the designated spaces. It doesn’t matter how many players there are, you always use all the tiles.
- Now, lay out the Bear Statues next to the game board in numerical order. The number of players determines the values you should use. You can find these values on the tiles themselves, shown in an octagon with a golden background color.
- Finally, shuffle the 12 Park Areas that don’t have an Entrance. Split them into two piles of six, and make sure that only the top tile of each pile is visible to all players.
That’s it! You’re now ready to start playing!
Everyone gets their own Park Area with an Entrance. Put it in front of you with the Entrance closest to you and the icons facing the right way. This is your park that you’ll be working on. (The different nationalities on the Entrances don’t matter).I visited an animal park and became the starting player in this game. But if none of us have visited an animal park, we can just choose a starting player randomly. As the starting player, I received a Toilet, and the second player got a Playground. If there’s a third player, they also get a Playground, and the fourth player gets a Food Street. However, if we’re playing with three players, the third player gets a Food Street instead of a Playground. We each keep our tiles in front of us, which becomes our supply for the game.
Now, let’s talk about how the game is played. We take turns in a clockwise order, starting with the starting player. Each player takes their turn, and this goes on until the game ends. A turn consists of three steps:
1. Place a Tile
2. Evaluate Icons
3. Place a Bear Statue

When you’re playing the game, the first thing you need to do is take one tile from your supply and put it in your park. You can also choose to replace a Green Area with any of your choosing. If there aren’t any more tiles in a pile, you can’t take any more from it. The Animal Houses have white symbols that show how many points they are worth.

Let me tell you about a cool game I love to play called Park Area. In the game, there are rules for placing new Park Areas in your park. It’s really simple, so let me explain it to you!
First, you need to take the top Park Area from one of the two piles. If one pile is empty, don’t worry, just choose the other one. Once you have your new Park Area, it’s time to add it to your park.
Here are the rules for placing the new Park Area:
- You have to put the new Park Area next to another Park Area in your park. They need to be side by side, with their edges perfectly aligned.
- All the icons on the Park Area need to be facing the right way. So make sure the bottom of the icon is pointing towards you.
- Just one more thing – you can’t place the new Park Area closer to you on the table than the Entrance to your park. Keep it fair for everyone!
Now, here’s something important to remember: you can only have four Park Areas in total. So if you already have four, you can’t get another one, even if you cover your fourth construction crew during the game. Keep that in mind!
Now it’s time to add a Bear Statue to your park.
Okay, let’s see if you finished a Park Area (with or without Entrance), meaning you covered all the spaces with tiles except the Pit.
If you did, great job! Now you get to choose a Bear Statue tile with the highest value from the supply and place it on the Pit of the completed Park Area. And if you managed to complete multiple Park Areas in one turn, you can take a Bear Statue for each area you completed.
Passing
If it’s your turn, but you don’t have a tile in your supply that you can place in your park, then you have to pass. But don’t worry, you get to take a free Green Area of your choice from the Supply Board – either a Toilet, Playground, Food Street, or River – and add it to your supply.
Just remember, your turn is over as soon as you pass. And you can only place the free tile on your next turn. So, if you have a tile to place, you can’t pass.
End of the Game
Once you finish all four Park Areas, I give everyone else one more turn. Then it’s time to score your parks. To do that, just add up all the numbers on your tiles in the park, including the Bear Statues.
Example: The park that they’re working on (but unfortunately didn’t finish on time) is worth a total of 76 points.
In the game, the person with the highest number of points is the winner. If there is a tie, the tied players add up the values of the tiles they have left, and the one with the highest total wins. If there is still a tie, then there can be multiple winners.
The Expert Version: Achievements
For experienced players, we suggest adding Achievements to the game. These give you extra points if you meet certain requirements.
Setting Up: Choose three Achievements out of the ten available (either randomly or by agreement). We suggest starting with “Polar Bears,” “Green Areas,” and “Animal Houses.”
There are three copies of each Achievement, each with a different number of points. Place the three tiles of each Achievement in separate piles where everyone can see them. Arrange the tiles in each pile based on their number, with the highest value on top.
When you’re playing a game with two players, each pile should have its Achievement with the lowest value removed.
Now, let’s add a fourth step to your turns:

If you fulfill the requirements for one or more Achievements, you can choose the top tile from the appropriate pile and put it in front of you. Remember, you can only claim one tile of each type, even if you meet the requirements multiple times.
