Aquaretto With Zooloretto Rules
A Unique and Exciting Game with Animals and Water
Hey there! Have you ever heard of Aquaretto? It’s a really cool game that combines animals and water to create a fun and unique experience. In this article, I want to tell you all about it and also introduce you to the rules of the game.
First, let’s talk about what Aquaretto is. It’s a board game where players take on the role of zookeepers. But, this is not just any zoo – it’s an aquatic zoo! You’ll be managing different enclosures filled with all sorts of water-dwelling creatures. Your goal is to attract as many visitors as possible and make sure they have a great time at your zoo.
But wait, there’s more! Aquaretto is actually an expansion of another game called Zooloretto. In Zooloretto, players create their own zoos, but in Aquaretto, the focus shifts to aquatic animals and water habitats. So, if you’re already familiar with Zooloretto, you’ll love Aquaretto even more!
The Rules of Aquaretto
Now that you know what Aquaretto is all about, let me explain the rules of the game. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it may seem at first.
Each player starts with an empty zoo and three animal stalls. On your turn, you can do one of three things: take a tile, place a tile, or take money. The tiles represent different animals that you can add to your zoo. You’ll need to decide which animals to add to attract visitors and earn points.
But here’s the catch: you have limited space in your zoo, so you’ll need to be strategic about where you place your animals. You want to create attractive enclosures that will draw in visitors. You can also expand your zoo by adding more animal stalls, but be careful not to overcrowd your zoo.
In addition to managing your zoo, you also need to keep an eye on the visitors. Visitors will come to your zoo and pay admission fees. The more visitors you attract, the more money you’ll earn. And money is important because it can be used to expand your zoo or attract even more visitors.
The game continues until all the animal tiles have been placed. Players then count up their points, which are awarded for visitor attractions and enclosures. The player with the most points wins the game!
In Conclusion
Aquaretto is a truly unique and exciting game that brings together animals and water in a fun and strategic way. Whether you’re a fan of Zooloretto or new to the world of zookeeping games, Aquaretto offers a fresh and engaging experience that will keep you coming back for more. So gather your friends, set up your zoo, and get ready to dive into the world of Aquaretto!

Note: If you’re familiar with Zooloretto and Aquaretto, this variant is perfect for you!
To play this variant, you’ll need components from both Aquaretto and Zooloretto basic sets.
Here’s what you need to do to prepare:
- Place only as many trucks in the middle as there are players in the game. If there are 2 players, use 3 trucks.
- Each player should take only 2 coins.
Follow all the other preparation instructions from the rules of both games. This means that each player needs a zoo board, a zoo expansion board, a water zoo board, a depot, and 4 expansion boards. If there are fewer than 5 players, remove the recommended animal tiles from both games. Shuffle the tiles from the two games separately and create separate stacks with them.
If you like the game, here’s a tip: for the end of the game, create two separate stacks with 15 tiles each. One stack should have Zooloretto tiles, and the other should have Aquaretto tiles.
When you’re playing the game, follow these steps:
A. Add a tile to a delivery truck
There are some restrictions when you’re placing tiles on trucks:
- You can only place Zooloretto tiles OR Aquaretto tiles on each truck. You get to decide which game’s tiles will go on a truck if you’re the first to place a tile in that round.
- In each round, there must be at least one truck with Zooloretto tiles and at least one truck with Aquaretto tiles.
For example, let’s say all trucks except one have Zooloretto tiles on them. You can only place Aquaretto tiles on the remaining truck.
B. Take a delivery truck to end your turn
When it comes to taking a truck, there are a few restrictions you need to be aware of:
Important: You can’t take the first truck until there’s at least one truck with Zooloretto tiles and one truck with Aquaretto tiles.
During your turn, you can only take one delivery truck, and it must have at least one tile face up on it.
You can only place Zooloretto tiles in the zoo and Aquaretto tiles in the water zoo or depot, following the usual tile placement rules. Your coins and coin tiles can be used interchangeably, regardless of the game they originated from.
C. Do a money action
If you choose this action, you can only perform a money action in your zoo or water zoo.
End of the Game
So here’s how it works: when you grab the first tile from one of the two stacks with the wooden discs, the remaining tiles from that stack are taken out of the game at the end of the round. From the next round onwards, you’ll only be drawing tiles from the other stack.
Just a heads up: this means that the rules for placing tiles and taking the first truck will change too.
Now, if you happen to draw the first tile from the second stack with the wooden disc, the current round will continue as usual until the end. Once each player has grabbed a delivery truck during this round, that’s when the game ends and it’s time for the final scoring.
Let’s tally up the points:
Hey there! Let’s talk about how we score the water zoo and depot in Aquaretto, shall we? Follow along, and I’ll explain it all to you.
So, in Aquaretto, we score the water zoo and depot based on the rules. However, there’s one exception to keep in mind. If you have one or two cashiers, you’ll receive points for all the coins you have, no matter which game they come from. Pretty neat, right?
Now, let’s move on to Zooloretto. In Zooloretto, we score the zoo and barn based on the rules as well. But, there’s a little twist here too. If you have a manager in your water zoo, you’ll get -1 point for each animal type in the barn. Something to keep in mind!
Okay, now that we have that covered, here’s what you need to do. Add up the scores from both games, and that’s it! The player with the most points wins. Easy peasy.
And just so you know, if there’s a tie, we follow the same rules as before to resolve it. Clear enough, right? Now, go out there and have some fun! Good luck!
