How to Play Blast Off
The rules of Blast Off are as straightforward as they are captivating. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to navigate your spaceship through a maze of obstacles and reach the final destination: the unknown planet X. But be warned, dear traveler, for this journey is no walk in the park!
The controls at your disposal are simple yet powerful. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate your spaceship through the treacherous maze. The up arrow will propel your ship forward, while the left and right arrows will rotate it in their respective directions. And if you need to slow down a bit, just tap the down arrow to gently decelerate.
As you traverse the maze, you’ll encounter various challenges that will test your skills and reflexes. Hurdles such as asteroid belts, gravitational pulls, and wormholes will be thrown in your path. It’s up to you to deftly maneuver your ship and overcome these obstacles to reach your goal.
Scoring Points and Winning the Game
Every obstacle you successfully navigate will earn you points, so keep your eyes peeled and your hands steady. And don’t forget to collect the fuel canisters along the way, for they will provide a much-needed boost to your journey. The more fuel canisters you collect, the farther you’ll be able to go!
The ultimate goal in Blast Off is to reach planet X with the highest score possible. Each successfully overcome obstacle will add to your total score, so aim for precision and speed. The goal of this game is to be the first person to get rid of all your cards. You can do this by matching colors, numbers, or words at the right time and completing missions correctly!
Getting Started
First, you need to separate the 16 Mission Statement cards from the rest of the deck. Shuffle them up, then place them face down to the side.
Now, shuffle the remaining cards and deal 6 cards to each player. Make sure to keep them face down. The rest of the cards will be the draw pile, which you’ll place in the center of the playing area.
Next, turn the top card from the draw pile face up. This will be the start of the discard pile. Take a look at your cards and get ready to play!
Remember: If the game starts with a Wild card, the dealer gets to choose the color and number or word it represents.
About the Game
Hey there! So, I wanted to tell you about this cool game I learned recently. It’s called Match a Card, and it’s really fun to play. The best part is, it’s super easy to learn!
Here’s how it works:
Game Play
When you play Match a Card, there’s a dealer who starts the game. The person sitting to the left of the dealer gets to go first, and then the game moves to the left.
Okay, now it’s your turn! Here are your options:
Match a Card
When you’re playing the card game, you need to match a card from your hand to the top card on the discard pile. Simply place your card on top of the pile to make the match, and that ends your turn. Remember, you can only make one match per turn. Matches can be made based on color (orange, green, purple, or red), number (1, 2, 3, etc.), or word (like “Blast Off”).

Always Stay Stocked with Draw Cards
If you can’t find a match in your hand, it means you have to draw a card from the draw pile. If you can play the drawn card, go ahead and play it. But if not, just add it to your hand. And remember, drawing a card ends your turn.
Note: If the draw pile runs out of cards, don’t worry. Simply leave the last card played on the table, and then shuffle the rest of the discard pile to create a fresh draw pile.

When it’s my turn, I can start a Countdown by playing a rocket card. I can play it on any card on top of the discard pile. Then, I shout “Countdown!”
We all have to count together, in a specific order: “10-9-J-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-Blast Off!”
While we’re counting, we don’t take turns anymore. Instead, we race to get rid of cards that match the numbers we’re calling out. If I have a matching card in my hand, I have to slap it down on the discard pile right away. But if someone else beats me to it, I have to take my card back. I have to be quick because I might have the next card that’s called!
The numbered cards and Blast Off cards can be any color, as long as we play them in the right order.
When nobody can play the next correct card in the sequence, just skip it and move on to the following card. Keep going until someone plays the Blast Off card. If I’m the one who plays the Blast Off card, I’ll turn over a Mission Statement card (you can find more about them in the “Mission Statements” section below). The game continues clockwise from the player who played the last card during the Countdown.
A Few Notes about the Countdown
- You’re not allowed to play another Countdown card when a Countdown is already in progress.
- At any time, you can play a Wild card instead of another card!
- If nobody has a card with the number 10, move on to the next card (number 9). If nobody has a card with the number 9, move on to the next card (number 8), and so on.
- If the last card in the sequence is a Wild card, in addition to turning over a Mission Statement card, I must also say loudly the color and the number or word for the next play.
If no one plays a Blast Off (or Wild) card, a Mission Statement card won’t be revealed. The Mission Statements are special instructions that come into play when you use the Blast Off! card during a Countdown. When you announce a new Mission, you draw a Mission Statement card and read it out loud for everyone to hear. Keep the card face up so that it can be referred to if needed. All players must follow this new rule on their turns until a new Mission is announced. For an exciting twist, check out the “Mission Out of Control!” variation below.
Did you know that if you forget to follow a Mission at the right time and another player catches you, you have to draw four cards from the draw pile? But hey, keep it on the down-low. If nobody catches you, you can keep playing as usual.
The winner of the game is the first player who runs out of cards. If you want, you can also have runners-up by continuing the game until there’s only one player left with cards.
