The Goodge family created this game, drawing inspiration from popular card games like Spades and Rook. In The Goodge Rules, your goal is to bid on how many points you believe you can collect during each round. The player with the highest bid becomes the Goodge, gaining special privileges and responsibilities.

How to Play

So, how do you play The Goodge Rules? Let me break it down for you. First, each player will place a bid, stating how many points they think they can collect. The player with the highest bid becomes the Goodge for that round. As the Goodge, you have some important decisions to make. You get to exchange cards with the kitty, name the trump suit, and lead the first trick. It’s up to you to strategize and make the best choices to score points.

Scoring

Shall we talk about scoring? In The Goodge Rules, points determine the winner. Your score is based on how many points you manage to collect. Here’s the catch – if you become the Goodge, you must capture at least as many points as you bid. Otherwise, you will actually lose points for the round. So, it’s a double-edged sword! Make sure you’re confident in your abilities before placing a bid.

The Game Continues

The game continues with multiple rounds until one player reaches a total of 500 points or more. That player is crowned the ultimate winner of The Goodge Rules! It’s an exhilarating race to the finish, and you never know who might come out on top. Will it be you?

When you open the box, you’ll find everything you need to start playing. Inside, there’s a deck of 51 cards with five different suits: Spades, Diamonds, Stars, Hearts, and Clubs. Each suit has cards numbered 1-10. But wait, there’s also a special card called the Crown. It doesn’t belong to any suit, and it adds an exciting twist to the game.

Along with the deck of cards, you’ll also get an instruction booklet and a few scoresheets. Don’t worry if you run out of scoresheets, though. You can easily print more from Regal’s website.

SETUP

Alrighty, let’s get this game started! First things first, grab that deck of cards and give it a good shuffle. Now, it’s time to put three cards face down in what we like to call the Stash. The Stash is a special pile that the person who wins the bidding will get to mess with later on.

Once the Stash is all set, deal out the rest of the deck evenly among the players. If there are three of us playing, we each get 16 cards. If there are four players, we’ll each get 12 cards. Got it? Good. Let the fun begin!

The Game

So, here’s how the game goes down: we play a bunch of rounds, and each round starts with a bid.

The Bid

Okay, let’s talk bidding. The player who’s sitting to the left of the dealer goes first. They gotta start with a bid of at least 50 points. We’ve got a grand total of 250 points up for grabs in this game. If a player doesn’t feel like bidding, no worries, they can just say “pass”. Once you pass, you’re out of the bidding game.

Now, once a player makes their bid, the next player to their left gets a shot at bidding. But here’s the catch: they gotta bump up the bid by 5 points each time. As you can imagine, this keeps going until everyone except one player has passed on the bidding. And remember folks, once you pass, you can’t just jump back in.

The Goodge

Alright, now let me tell you about the Goodge. The player with the highest bid gets this glorious title. But here’s the thing: the Goodge has to capture at least as many points as they bid. If they don’t, they’re gonna lose some points off their score. And that’s not goodge at all.

So, I pick up the Stash and add those cards to my hand. Next, I have to choose three cards from my hand and place them face down as the new Stash. The winner of the last round gets to take those Stash cards at the end.

Now, it’s time to pick the trump suit and start the first trick. I can play any card from my hand to lead the trick.

Playing the Tricks

The first card that’s played sets the Lead Suit for that trick. Everyone else has to play a card of the same suit if they have one. But if they don’t, they can play any card from their hand.

Don’t forget about the Crown card! It becomes part of the trump suit. If the lead card is a trump card and a player only has the Crown card, they have to play it.

When we play this card game called The Goodge Rules, winning a trick is the ultimate goal. To win a trick, there are a few things to keep in mind. The highest card in the lead suit or the highest trump card, which is called the Crown, wins the trick. Once you win a trick, you collect it and place the cards face-down in your collection pile.

As the game progresses, you’ll continue playing tricks until it’s time for the final trick. The person who wins this final trick gets a sweet bonus. They not only collect the trick but also snag the Stash, which they add to their collection pile. It’s like a little victory lap to end the game.

SCORING

Now, let’s talk about scoring in The Goodge Rules. Not all cards are created equal when it comes to points. Some cards have more value than others. The 1’s are the big winners, worth a whopping 20 points. The 5’s also have some value, giving you 15 points. The 10’s are not too shabby either, worth 10 points. And let’s not forget about the Crown, the ultimate card in the game, scoring you a whopping 25 points.

Once all the cards are played, it’s time to tally up the scores. Each player looks at how many points they’ve won and adds that number to their score. However, there’s a catch. If the Goodge, which is another name for the player who made a bid, didn’t capture enough points to reach their bid, they have to make a sacrifice. They deduct their bid from their score. For example, let’s say a player made a bid of 120 points but only managed to capture 100 points. They have to deduct 120 points from their score, which can be a tough blow.
