Let’s talk about the first map, Map B. It has a compass rose in the bottom right corner and is designed to mimic the ruins upon which Gloomhaven was built.

Now let’s move on to the second map, Map C. It doesn’t have any specific theme, but it offers a more open board that encourages a friendlier game.

To set up the game, take three prestige building cards from the bottom of the deck and place them on the three spaces at the top of the adviser and proposal board. Then, deal four adviser cards to the four spaces at the bottom of the board (this is called the adviser offer).

Let me explain what happens when two prestige buildings of the same type (both shape and color) are dealt out. You know the ones that are super fancy and special? Well, if that happens, here’s what we do. Take the building that is on the rightmost side and put it on top of the deck where we draw new buildings from.   • The resource card for your race’s resource is now your resource reference. You can flip it over and use it during the game.

Once everyone has chosen their race, we take the remaining resource cards and, starting with the last player, we each choose an additional resource to control. You pick a resource card from the leftover cards and take the set of three corresponding resource trade stall tiles.

Now, you place the chosen resource card on the designated space on your player mat. But remember, you can’t claim a resource card that is forbidden by your race. Look for the red resource symbols in the center of your player mat.

So, here’s how it goes down. Once both of us have snagged our first resource card (which means your second one, counting the one that your race gives you), we take turns picking our third resource. It’s pretty straightforward, right?

When you’re playing a game with 2 or 3 people, there will be some resources that no one claims. These are called neutral resources. We set aside the trade stall tiles for these resources. During the game, any player can place these tiles on the board using a trade action (see p.12).

Next, starting with the last player, everyone takes turns placing one of their race’s resource trade stall tiles on a grey space on the board that has a number equal to or lower than the player count v. Then, they place one of their claim tokens on top of the tile.

Now, all players should put one of their delivery tokens on the “1” spot on their player mats w. They should also place another delivery token on the corresponding resource’s “own” spot on the resource tracker board x.

When I look at the city, I see that it is divided into three distinct sections. There’s a thematic map that’s divided by a river on one side and a wall on the other side. In the middle of this map, there’s a big black square. Then, there’s another map called the symmetric map, which is divided by three rivers that come out from the center. In the middle of this map, there’s a special area called the Ghost Fortress.

It’s interesting to note that we can’t build anything on the rivers, the wall, or the black square. These spaces are off-limits for construction. The same goes for the spots reserved for the prestigious buildings like the Gatehouses and the Ghost Fortress. We have to respect these limitations when developing our city.

How to Play the Game

Welcome to the world of Gloomhaven! In this game, we’ll be working together to create something amazing. Our goal is to build advanced resources and deliver them to prestigious buildings, all while trying to score as many points as possible.

But before we jump into the gameplay, let’s talk about two important concepts: upgrading resources and earning points.

Upgrading Resources

When you play the game, you’ll notice that the race mats and resource cards show different combinations of resources needed to make higher-level resources. Let’s take a look at an example: metal and knowledge can be combined to create machinery. This means that if you want to build a machinery resource building tile, you can only place it next to the prerequisite resource tiles. And you need to have a claim token on each of those resource tiles.

So here’s the thing: when it comes to tiles, being connected means that they are right next to each other or there’s a clear pathway between them using a string of road tiles that are touching each other. Now, let’s talk about advanced resource buildings. When you build one of these, something special happens. You see, these buildings have prerequisites – other resources that you need to have before you can build them. And here’s the cool part: when you score an advanced resource building, you score the prerequisite resources too! But wait, there’s more – if you have multiple sources of a prerequisite resource connected to your resource building, you get to choose which one to use and distribute points from. It’s like having options, you know?

Example 1: When I build the machinery tile, I use the resources it needs. If someone else owns the metal tile, they earn 1 point, and if someone else owns the knowledge tile, they earn 1 point too.

If a resource that the machinery tile needs is also an advanced resource building (for example, if it’s a tier 3 resource being built), that building also gives points to its prerequisites. However, the points paid out come from the points that the building being built earned (see example 2).

In general, whenever a resource building gives points to its owner, it must also give points to its prerequisites using the points it earned. It’s important to note that if I own the prerequisite myself, I don’t give myself any points for that resource. It only matters if someone else owns a prerequisite.

Example 2: Let’s say I build a cloth tile. But here’s the thing – I can’t just magically make it appear. I need some resources first. So I use the livestock tile, and that earns me 1 point. And I also need the machinery tile, which earns me a whopping 4 points!

But hold on, it’s not that simple. The machinery tile has its own prerequisites, which means I have to pay out some points again. So the owner of the knowledge tile earns 1 point, and the owner of the metal tile earns 1 point. That means I have 2 points left for myself as the owner of the machinery tile.

If you see a number in parentheses below the main point value, it means there are more prerequisites. And that number tells you how many extra points that resource earns on top of the points it pays to its prerequisites.

So here’s the deal: when a machine helps make cloth, it gets 4 points. But that “+2” you see below means that after 1 point goes to knowledge and 1 point goes to metal, the machine’s owner is left with 2 points.

Resources come into play when they’re sent to fancy buildings. As soon as the resource is connected to a building that needs it, it gets delivered – no matter when it happens. Sometimes, one action can deliver multiple resources all at once.

The player who owns the resource that gets delivered puts a delivery token on the resource icon on the building tile. And that player gets points equal to the value shown in the banner below the resource icon.

When you place a delivery token in a square, you can’t deliver the same resource to that building again. If there are multiple resource tiles of the same type that can be delivered to the prestige building tile, you get to choose which one supplies the resource and earns you the points.

Remember that you have to pay for the prerequisites for the resources you deliver. This comes out of the points you earn from the delivery, as explained on the previous page. Also, delivering a tier 3 resource can have a cascade effect. This means that if you earn points for a tier 2 resource, you might have to pay some of those points to another player who supplies a basic resource for your tier 2 resource (see example 5).

So, here’s an interesting scenario: Let’s say we have a University that is placed right next to a population resource tile. In this situation, the player who has the color blue gets to collect the population and deliver it to the University. To indicate this, the blue player places their delivery token on the population icon. As a reward for their successful delivery, the blue player earns 3 points.

In this example, I’m going to show you how building with different resources can earn you points in the game. Let’s imagine a scenario where Yellow wants to build a road that connects her brick resource building to the Merchant’s Guild.

When Yellow finishes building the road, she immediately delivers the brick to the Merchant’s Guild and earns 6 points. However, there’s a catch. Yellow needs to use Blue’s stone resource to make the brick, so she has to pay Blue 1 point for using their resource. She also pays 1 point to herself for using her own population. So in total, Yellow earns 5 points from this action, and Blue earns 1 point.

In another example, let’s say White decides to build a government resource building adjacent to the Merchant’s Guild. Before the resource is delivered, points need to be distributed for the construction of the government building.

White earns 2 points because his jewelry building tile is being used. Additionally, Purple earns 4 points because her book building tile is being used as well. However, Purple has to take those 4 points and pay 1 point to the owner of the crops (Yellow) and 1 point to herself for the knowledge resource. So in the end, White earns 2 points, Purple earns 3 points, and Yellow earns 1 point for this building action.

Once the government resource is delivered to the Merchant’s Guild, White earns 10 more points. However, he has to pay 4 points to Purple for using her book tile. White also pays 2 points to himself for the jewelry. Purple, on the other hand, pays 1 point to Yellow for using her crops to make the books. So for the delivery, White earns 6 points, Purple earns 3 points, and Yellow earns 1 point. In total, White earns 8 points, Purple earns 6 points, and Yellow earns 2 points.

Neutral Buildings

Hey there! Let’s talk about neutral buildings in the game. When you’re playing with only two or three players, you’ll come across two neutral resources. It’s important to note that no one gets points when a neutral resource building earns them. Instead, all basic neutral resources are considered to be worth 2 points instead of just 1 when points are given out for a prerequisite.

Now, let’s say you’re playing and you decide to build a machinery building using a neutral metal resource. In this case, only the owner of the knowledge tile is awarded a point. The other players don’t get anything.

But here’s where it gets interesting. If you then deliver the machinery resource to a prestige building and earn 4 points, one of those points goes to the owner of the knowledge tile. However, 2 points are lost for the metal tile. So, the owner of the machinery tile ends up with only 1 point, even though there’s a “(+2)” written on the machinery delivery. Basically, the value in parentheses is reduced by one for each neutral direct prerequisite.

By the way, whenever a fancy building that needs a neutral basic resource is placed on the board, you get that resource right away, no matter if it’s connected or not. Then, a neutral delivery token is put on the fancy tile (pick a color that no player is using).

The Game’s Structure

Starting with the first player and going in order, we each make one move by playing a card from our hand into our discard pile. Usually, this move is a “Call to Work,” but one of our cards is a “Call to Vote,” which lets us take back all the cards we’ve played.

After finishing all the actions in our turn, including any follow-up moves (see next section), the active player token goes to the next player in line. We repeat this process until the end of the game is triggered.

Call to Work

When I have a hand of action cards in front of me, I have a decision to make. I can either play one of the cards face-up on the table and carry out its main action, or I can play one face-down and instead take a basic action. If I choose to play the card face-up, I have to be sure that I can fully resolve its main action.

The Choice to Lead or Follow

Once I have played a face-up card as my call to work action and resolved it, it’s time for the other players to join in. Starting with the player sitting to my left and going in player order, they can choose to follow my lead.

Each player has two options – they can either perform the follow action specified on the card I played, or they can opt for a basic action. After every other player has made their choice, it’s the end of my turn and the active player token is passed on.

Recruit

When it comes to recruiting new advisers in the game, I have a standard main recruit action. It’s pretty simple – I just pick a card from the adviser offer and add it to my hand. Plus, as a bonus, I also get some fleeting influence.

Now, there are a couple of things I need to keep in mind before I can recruit an adviser card. First off, I have to either own or be able to access the resource that’s shown in the lower left corner of the card. That’s a bit of a requirement.

And secondly, I also have to pay some money. The cost is displayed right above the card on the adviser and proposal board. It could be either 1 or 2 coins, depending on the card.
