Welcome to Mysterium Park
In Mysterium, there are two types of players. You can either be a psychic, trying to solve a murder, or a ghost, helping the psychic crack the case. As a ghost, your goal is to use strange visions to guide the players and help them narrow down the suspect and location pool. Eventually, you want to lead everyone to guess the correct solution. As a psychic, you work together with others to eliminate suspects and locations, and deduce the final solution before time runs out.
It’s important to know that the ghost can’t speak. Instead, they communicate through vision cards, which they use to give clues. The players, on the other hand, can’t directly talk to the ghost or ask it any questions. However, they are allowed to communicate with each other because this is a cooperative game.
Let’s Set Up the Game
Phase One:
When we play the game, the ghost is in charge of shuffling the deck of plot cards. They’ll draw one card and keep it hidden in a cardholder. Then they’ll draw two more cards and place them facedown next to the first one. No one else gets to see these plot cards. The first card is for round one, the second card is for round two, and the third card is for the final solution. The rest of the plot cards are put back in the box.
Next, the ghost will take the three tickets and put them nearby. They’ll also shuffle the vision cards and draw seven cards into their hand.
Now it’s time for the psychics to set up. They’ll take the game board and place it on the table. The turn marker goes next to the number 1 on the board. Each player chooses their character color and gets a marker and a token. The witness token is placed near the board too.
Hey there! Let me walk you through the first phase of the game. We’ll start by shuffling the character cards and dealing out 9 of them. These cards will be placed on the board in random spots. The rest of the characters go back into the box.
Alright, now let’s move on to round two. This time, we’ll shuffle the location cards and follow the same sequence. The ghost should also discard their last plot card and use their second plot card for this round.
Phase two
If we manage to complete rounds one and two on time, we can move on to the second phase. Here’s how it works:
We’ll shuffle the three remaining characters and locations separately. The characters will go on the second row of the board, and the locations will go on the third row. The ghost will discard their second plot card and place their third and final plot card in the cardholder.
GAMEPLAY
Phase One
Okay, here’s the deal: the game has two phases, each with two rounds. You’ve got a total of 6 turns to complete both rounds, otherwise, it’s game over.
First, let’s talk about round one. Your goal here is to figure out who the suspect is. Each player takes a turn clearing their unknown target. And yup, you’ll do the same in round two, but this time you’re narrowing down the location of the murder.
Plot Cards
Now, the ghost – that’s you – checks out this plot card. It tells you which players need to clear which card. And oh yeah, it also reveals the witness. Choosing this character means you get some bonus actions!
Visions
When I’m the ghost, I start with a hand of 7 vision cards. These cards give me clues about the cards I need to clear. I can look through them and then give one or more cards to a player as clues. But here’s the catch – once I give the clues, I can’t go back to that player. I have to give them all the clues at once.
After giving the clues, I can redraw up to 7 cards before it’s time to repeat the process with the remaining players.
But what if I can’t find any clues in my hand of cards? That’s where the tickets come in. I have three tickets that I can use to discard as many cards as I want from my hand. Once I’ve discarded the cards, I can draw new ones to replace them. But remember, I only have three tickets, so I have to use them wisely.
Game Turn
So, here’s the deal. When we play this game, there’s this fancy thing called a plot card. The ghost, that’d be me, takes a peek at it and gets familiar with what it’s all about. Then, I start giving you guys some clues. And that’s when the fun begins!
Your job is to look at the clues I give you and try to figure out what they mean. It’s like solving a mystery, you know? When you think you’ve got it, you can choose a card that you think matches your visions. Easy peasy.
Once everyone has made their choice, you let me know what you picked. And here’s the twist – if someone chose the witness card on the first round, I’ll spill the beans and let them know. They have to change their marker and put the witness token in that spot. But don’t worry, you still have a chance to change your answer too, if you want to.
Once we’ve all chosen our cards and completed the witness (if needed), the ghost will let us know if we got it right or wrong. If our guess is correct, we replace our marker with our token and get ready for the next round. We discard our clue cards and wait for the new round to begin. But if we’re not correct, we take back our marker and keep our vision cards. We’ll have to make a new guess in the next turn. After everyone has been told whether they were right or wrong, the marker is moved down and a new turn begins.
If everyone manages to guess their cards correctly, we move on to the next round. If we’re on round one, we start round two. And if we complete round two, we move on to the second phase. But if we can’t finish both rounds before the 6th turn, the game is over and we lose.
Phase Two
Once I’ve completed rounds 1 and 2, it’s time for the next phase. After setting up, I take a look at my final plot card. I’m only interested in the roman numeral, which will tell me which character and place I will be hinting at. From my hand, I can choose one card for the character and one card for the location. I shuffle them together and reveal them to the players. We can then discuss our thoughts on the cards and make a decision. We either have to come to a unanimous agreement or put it up to a vote. If there’s a tie, we vote again, but this time only for the tied options. Once we have our answers, I reveal who the true culprit is.
END OF GAME
The game ends in two ways: either when time runs out and all players haven’t completed rounds 1 and 2, or when we guess the final solution. If time runs out, we all lose – the players and the ghost. If we make a guess but get it wrong, we also lose. But if we manage to guess correctly, we all win!
