Get Ready for the Mpourloto Adventure!

Hey there, welcome to the world of Mpourloto! It’s a super fun trick-taking game where you’ll team up with a partner and face off against another dynamic duo. The aim of the game? Simple – be the first team to reach 1000 points! How do you do that? Well, it’s all about winning tricks with certain powerful cards and playing clever melds of cards together. Let’s dive in and find out more, shall we?

Let’s Set Things Up

Before we jump into the action, let’s get the game set up. You’ll need a 52-card deck to play Mpourloto, but don’t worry, we’ll modify it slightly to make it just right. First things first, remove all the 7s and lower cards from the deck. That leaves you with a deck consisting of Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, 10s, 9s, 8s, and 7s. We’re all set now!

When it comes to playing a card game, choosing a dealer is important. To keep things fair, the dealer should be chosen randomly. Once the dealer is selected, they will pass the deck to the person on their left for cutting.

Once the deck is cut, the dealer will distribute a 5-card hand to each player. After the hands are dealt, the dealer will flip over the next card to reveal the potential trump suit. The rest of the cards are placed face down in the center of the table.

The player on the left of the dealer will have the first opportunity to accept or pass on the trump suit. If they don’t want it, the chance moves to the next player on their left. This continues until a player accepts the trump or all 4 players pass.

If all 4 players pass, a new round begins. This time, any player can accept and name any suit as the trump suit. If no one accepts again, all the cards are gathered and a new round of dealing begins.

Hey there! So, once we’ve figured out what the trump suit is, something pretty cool can happen. If I happen to have the 7 of the trump suit in my hand, I can trade it for the card that got flipped face-up in the center of the table. Neat, right? And then, the dealer keeps dealing, giving each player 3 more cards. Oh, and the dealer also gets the final card that was left in the center, as their last card.

What about the Cards?

Now, let’s talk about the rankings and values of the cards in Mpourloto. There are actually three different ranking systems we need to know. There’s one for the trump suit, another one for the non-trump suits, and finally, there’s a ranking system specifically for melding cards.

When it comes to the trump suits, the ranking goes like this: Jack is the highest, followed by the 9, Ace, 10, King, Queen, 8, and finally, the 7 is the lowest. And for each of these cards, they have corresponding values, which are 20 points, 14 points, 11 points, 10 points, 3 points, 4 points, 0 points, and 0 points, respectively.

Now, let’s move on to the non-trump suits. In this ranking system, the Ace takes the top spot, followed by the 10, King, Queen, Jack, 9, 8, and the lowly 7. Just like before, each of these cards has a specific value. The Ace is worth 11 points, the 10 is worth 10 points, the King is worth 4 points, the Queen is worth 3 points, the Jack is worth 2 points, and the 9, 8, and 7 are all worth 0 points.

When it comes to ranking cards in the game, there is a traditional order that is followed. The Ace is considered the highest, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, and 7, which is the lowest. These rankings are important in determining the value of melds, which I’ll explain in more detail below.

MELDS

Now, let’s talk about melds. In the game, players start by announcing their melds. It’s important to announce and show your melds in order to score their values. You can announce as many melds as you have in your hands. There are different types of melds you can make.

The first type is sequences. Sequences consist of 3, 4, or 5 cards of the same suit, following the ranking I mentioned earlier. For example, a sequence could be Ace of hearts, King of hearts, Queen of hearts, and Jack of hearts. A sequence of three cards is worth 20 points, a sequence of four cards is worth 50 points, and a sequence of five cards is worth 100 points.

When it comes to melds of 4 of a kind, they’re all about having four cards of the same rank. It’s like when you have four cards that are all the same, like the 6 of hearts, the 6 of clubs, the 6 of diamonds, and the 6 of spades. If you manage to do this, you get 100 points! Pretty cool, right?

But wait, there’s more! There’s something called Mpourlotos. It’s when you have the king and queen of the trump suit. These two cards are special and they’re worth 20 points. So if you have the king and queen of the trump suit, you’re on your way to scoring some serious points!

Now, Let’s Talk About Gameplay

The game starts once everyone has announced their melds. I begin by playing a card from my hand, and then the other players take their turns in a clockwise direction. When it’s your turn, you must play a card of the same suit as the one that was led if you have one. If you don’t have a card of the same suit, you can play a trump card. And if you don’t have a trump card either, you can play any card. When playing cards to follow suit, you should always try to beat the highest card that has been played so far. But if you can’t beat it, you can play any card that follows the rules I just mentioned. If the highest card is of the suit led, you should try to play a card of the same suit that beats it. But if you can’t, you can play any card of that suit. And in the case of trump cards, you should follow suit if you have one, but if you don’t, you should try to beat the trump card. And if you can’t beat it, you can play any trump card.

When we all play a card to the trick, the person who played the highest trump wins. If no trumps were played, the person who played the highest card of the suit that was led wins. The winner of that trick will be the one who leads the next one.

We will play all the tricks, and the last one is worth 10 points for the team that wins it. If the other team hasn’t won any tricks, the last trick is worth 90 points.

SCOREKEEPING

After each round, both teams will count their scores. This includes all the melds that were announced, the value of the cards won in tricks, and which team won the last trick.

If the team that chose the trump has more points than the other team, both teams will add their points to their total game scores.

If my team’s score for determining trumps is equal to or lower than the other team’s score, the other team gets all the points for the game. It’s a straightforward rule, really!

This is the end of the game

The team that reaches a total of 1000 points first wins the game. If both teams reach 1000 points at the same time, the team with the higher total wins. And if they’re tied, they’ll play two more rounds to decide the winner. It’s all about getting to that 1000-point mark!
