INTRODUCTION TO KEMPS
Welcome to Kemps! Kemps is a team-based card game that brings together the excitement of cards and the enjoyment of alcohol. In Kemps, players form pairs to make teams. The objective is to collect a set of four cards with the same rank, and then discreetly communicate with your partner to shout out “Kemps!”
To play this game, all you need is a deck of cards and some alcohol. We gather in a circle around a table, making sure nobody sits next to their partner. The dealer gives each of us four face-down cards, which we must keep to ourselves. Then, the rest of the deck is placed next to the dealer.
Now, here’s the fun part: we have to come up with a secret non-verbal cue that only our own team members know. We can even throw in some fake cues to confuse the other players who are paying close attention. It adds an extra layer of excitement to the game!
If there are more than six of us playing, we can easily add a second deck of cards.
IT’S GAME TIME!
The game I’m about to tell you about is all about having four cards that are the same. It could be four 2s, four 5s, or any other number you can think of. The tricky part is that you have to let your teammate know, without the other team finding out. You do this by using a special signal. Once your teammate gets the signal, they have to shout “Kemps!” before the other team can shout “Counter Kemps!”
Each round lasts about 5 minutes. The challenge is to be quick enough to get your four of a kind, but not so focused on that that you miss your teammate’s signal and get countered.
Getting Started and Swapping Cards
To start the game, the dealer flips over four cards from the deck and puts them in the middle of the table. Then, everyone tries to grab cards from the table while getting rid of their own cards. Just remember, you can’t have more than four cards in your hand.
In the world of card games, there’s a nifty little trick that can really mess with your opponents’ heads. It’s called a fake-out, and it involves pretending to grab certain cards to figure out what your opponents are up to.
Everyone keeps grabbing cards until they’ve had enough, like when you’ve had too much ice cream and you’re all, “No more, please!” When that moment hits, the dealer clears the table and the four leftover cards become the “dead card pile.” Then, the dealer deals four fresh cards to each player, and the game starts all over again.
Now, let’s talk about the “Four of a Kind.” When you’ve got four cards of the same rank, you have to let your partner know that it’s time to declare “Kemps.” But here’s the twist: you have to do it in a way that doesn’t give your strategy away to the other players. Sneaky, right?
Here’s the catch – if you wrongly declare “Kemps” because you thought your teammate was signaling you, well, tough luck, my friend. You lose the round. It’s a risky move, but one that can pay off big time if you play it right.
Hey there! So, if you think your opponents are trying to secretly communicate with each other, try crying out “Counter Kemps” to catch them in the act! If your hunch proves right and they reveal their hand, you’ll win the round. And guess what? The other team will have to drink a shot as a penalty. Pretty sweet deal, right?
But here’s the thing, if you get it wrong and there’s no cheating going on, then you’re the one who has to chug a beer. Tough luck, my friend.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. All members of the losing teams have to take a sip at the end of each round. And here’s the kicker: if two people happen to call out “Kemps” simultaneously, then everybody has to drink twice. Double trouble!
