Just One: A Cooperative Party Game

Hey there! Get ready for a super fun game that’ll put your English knowledge to the test. It’s called Just One. And guess what? It’s not a game where you compete against each other. Nope! In this game, we’ve got to work as a team and score points together.

Here’s How You Set Up the Game:

First things first, let’s shuffle the deck of cards. We then choose 13 cards at random and create a pile in the center of our play area. These cards stay face-down. The remaining cards go back into the game box since we won’t be needing them for now.

Okay, everyone, grab an easel and a dry erase marker. These will come in handy as we play the game.

Now, let’s determine who goes first. We’ll do this by randomly choosing one of you folks. Once we have our first player, we’re all set to begin!

How to Play Just One:

Alright, here’s how it’s gonna go. The first player, the one we randomly selected, becomes the active player.

When you’re playing the game, I grab the top card from the pile without peeking and put it on my easel. The easel is designed to hold the card in place, making it easy for everyone to see.

On the card, there are five numbered words. I pick one of those numbers and share it with you. That way, you know which word you need to give clues for!

If you don’t know a word, tell me, and I’ll choose a different one for you.

If your word is okay, everyone else will write a clue on their own easel. Remember, you can’t talk to each other or suggest words.

Each clue can only be one word. Be creative and pick something unique. We want to avoid using common words that everyone will think of.

Once everyone has written their clues, close your eyes. Then, the other players will show each other their words and compare them. To be accepted, a clue must be valid. This means it can be a number, a special character, an acronym, or even a sound effect!

If two or more players write down the same words, we cancel out that clue by hiding it facing downwards on the easel.

In the game of wordplay, there is a rule that replaces words with actions. The rule applies when words lose their value because they are the same as other words. These worthless words can be from another language or they can be related to the secret word. For instance, if the secret word is “prince,” it would be incorrect to use the word “princess.” Likewise, invented or similar-sounding words like “where” and “were” are also considered invalid.

When you play the word-guessing game, the first thing you need to do is compare and cancel out words. Then, I’ll show you the remaining words and give you clues to help you guess the mystery word. But remember, you only get one guess!

A Different Way for Three Players

If there are only three players, we make a small change to the game.

Instead of one easel, each player gets two. That means everyone can write two different clues, one on each easel.

Other than that, we follow the same rules as in the regular game.

How We Score

If you correctly guess the mystery word, everyone gets a point. We also put the card face-up next to the deck of 12 remaining cards. Each face-up card is worth one point.

If you guess wrong, you don’t get any points, and both the card in play and the top card of your deck go back in the game box.

You can also choose to skip guessing the mystery word if you think the clues aren’t helpful enough. When you do this, the card in play goes back in the game box, and the player to your left becomes the active player.

In the rare case that all the clues are canceled because some words are the same and others are invalid, or when all the clues are the same or invalid (oh dear!), the card with the mystery word goes in the game box and it’s the next player’s turn.

END OF GAME

The game ends when all 13 chosen cards are used up, whether you guess them correctly or not. The goal is to win all 13 points, but that doesn’t always happen.
