Dou dizhu – learn how to play with

DOU DIZHU

Let me tell you about a game called Dou Dizhu. It’s a really fun game that you can play with 3 or 4 people. The rules change a little bit depending on how many players there are, but the main goal of the game is always the same.

The game is made up of a bunch of rounds. After each round, everyone pays up. There are two teams in the game: one team has just one player, called the landlord, and the other team has two or three players who are up against the landlord. The goal for each team is to play their cards and get rid of all of them before the other team does.

SETUP

If there are 3 players, you’ll need one deck of 52 cards and one red joker and one black joker. If there are 4 players, you’ll need two decks of cards and two red jokers and two black jokers.

Hey there! Let me tell you about how the dealer is chosen and how the cards are shuffled in the Dou Dizhu game. The dealer is picked randomly at first and then moves in a counterclockwise direction with each new round. The deck of cards is mixed up by the dealer, and then the player to their left will cut the deck. After that, the deck is placed in the middle of the table.

A cool thing happens next! The dealer will turn over the top card of the deck and put it faceup in a random spot near the center of the deck. The player who draws this card will be the one to start the auction. Exciting, right?

Now, it’s time for the players to get their cards. Starting with the player who drew the special card, each player will take turns drawing cards one at a time in a counterclockwise order. For a game with three players, they will end up with a 17-card hand. If there are four players, they will have a 25-card hand. This means that after distributing the cards, there will be 3 leftover cards for a 3-player game and 8 leftover cards for a 4-player game. These leftovers will be used in the auction later on.

Let’s Talk About Card Rankings

Now that you know how the cards are dealt, let’s discuss how the cards are ranked in Dou Dizhu. Here’s the ranking from highest to lowest: Red Joker, Black Joker, 2, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3. The suits of the cards don’t matter, so it’s all about the numbers and the Jokers.

Time for the Auction

Once I have my cards in hand, the real excitement begins. It’s time to determine who will be the landlord. The player who happened to draw the faceup card gets the first chance to make a bid. You have a choice to either pass or bid 1, 2, or 3. However, if you decide to bid, it must be higher than the previous highest bid.

If everyone at the table passes, we’re going to have to reshuffle the deck and start over. But if a bid is made, the auction will continue until two consecutive players (or three players in total) pass or until someone goes all in with a bid of 3. Even if you initially passed, you still have a chance to jump back in and make a bid when it’s your turn again.

The player who places the highest bid successfully becomes the landlord and gets to take a peek at the remaining three or eight face-down cards in the deck. Talk about a sweet reward for taking a risk!

It’s All About the Gameplay

When you play the game, you can use any legal combination of cards. After you, the other players can either pass or play a higher-ranked version of the same combination. However, there are two exceptions to this rule that I’ll explain later. Even if a player has passed before, they can still choose to play a combination if their turn comes again.

The players take turns in an anticlockwise direction around the table. They can either play higher combinations or pass until two or three consecutive players pass. The winner of the trick gets to lead the next one. The cards they won are turned face-down and moved away from play.

There are 13 different types of combinations, and some of them are played differently depending on the number of players.

Types of Combinations

The first type of combination is a single card. They are ranked as described in the ranking section.

There are different types of combinations in the card game. Let’s explore each one:

The first type is called a pair. It’s when you have two cards of the same rank.

The second type is a triplet, which means you need three cards of the same rank.

The third type is a triplet with an extra card. This combination requires three cards of the same rank plus one additional card. The ranking is determined by the triplet. It’s important to note that this play is not allowed in a four-player game.

The fourth type is a triplet with an extra pair. To create this combination, you need a triplet and a pair. It is ranked based on the triplet.

The fifth type is a sequence. For this combination, you need five cards in consecutive order. However, the sequence cannot include 2s or jokers.

The sixth type is a sequence of pairs. This combination requires three or more pairs in consecutive order. Just like the sequence, it cannot contain 2s or jokers.

The seventh type is a sequence of triplets. It requires two or more triplets in consecutive order. Again, 2s and jokers are not allowed.

I’m going to share with you two more interesting combinations that can be found in the game of Rummy. The first one is called the ninth. It consists of a series of three cards of the same rank, with an extra card added. To make this combination, you’ll need at least two sets of consecutive triplets, and each triplet must have an additional card attached to it. But remember, the added cards cannot be the same as any of the triplets or other added cards. It’s important to note that twos and jokers cannot be used to make up the triplets, but they can be added as extra cards. However, you cannot use two jokers together, even though they are technically different cards. Just be aware that the ninth is not a legal combination in a 4-player game.

The second combination I want to tell you about is called the tenth. It consists of a series of triplets with additional pairs. To create this combination, you’ll need at least two sets of triplets, and each triplet must have a pair attached to it. The triplets don’t need to be in consecutive order, but they must be of the same rank. The pairs cannot be the same rank as any other pair in the combination or as any of the triplets. You can use twos as pairs, but not as triplets. And in 4-player games, the same colored jokers can be used as a pair. So, these are some additional combinations you can try in the game of Rummy. Have fun exploring and discovering new ways to play!

When you’re playing cards, there’s a special move that you can make called a bomb. It’s like when you have four cards that are all the same rank. You can play a bomb at any time during the game, and it’s a really powerful move. In fact, a bomb is one of the highest-ranking combinations you can make, with the exception of something even more powerful called a rocket.

Let me explain more about bombs. When you play a bomb, it beats all other combinations except a rocket. So if someone else plays a different combination, and you have a bomb, you automatically win that round. Now, here’s the interesting part – if there are more cards in your bomb, it’s an even stronger move. In a four-player game, a bomb can have more than four cards. The more cards your bomb has, the higher it ranks, regardless of the rank of the cards inside. So, for example, a bomb with five 3s would beat a bomb with four 7s. It’s all about the number of cards in your bomb!

Now, let’s move on to the rocket. This is the most powerful move in the game. In a three-player game, a rocket is made up of both jokers. But in a four-player game, it’s even more impressive – a rocket consists of all four jokers! When you have a rocket, you can basically play it on any trick you want, and it beats everything else. So if you have a rocket, you’re pretty much guaranteed to win that round.

Let’s talk about a special kind of card combination known as a quadplex set. There are actually two variations of this set. The first one is a quad, which means having four cards of the same rank, along with two additional cards. The second variation is a quad with two pairs – still four cards of the same rank, but this time paired with two different pairs. It’s important to note that all the single cards and pairs must have different ranks from the other cards in the combination. You can include 2s and jokers, but you can’t use both jokers in a single combination. When ranking quadplexes, it’s based on the quads themselves, and they can be beaten by bombs. However, it’s important to know that quadplexes are not a valid combination in a 4-player game.

PAYMENTS

Now, let’s talk about payments in the game. Once a player runs out of cards in their hand, the game comes to an end. If the landlord is the first one to empty their hand, they win the round, and each of the other players has to pay them the amount that was bid during the game (either 1, 2, or 3 payments). On the other hand, if any other player runs out of cards first, their team wins, and the landlord has to pay each of the other players the number of payments that were bid during the auction.

If you played bombs or rockets, they can impact the score. In games with three players, each rocket or bomb doubles the number of payments. In games with four players, bombs of 6 cards or more and all rockets double the payments. Lower bombs don’t affect the payments.

THE GAME ENDS

The game ends whenever you want it to. If you’re looking for a winner, the player who has won the most money should be declared the winner.
