DIXIT
Welcome to Dixit, where a single picture can speak volumes. In this game, I’ll take turns selecting one of my cards and describing it with just one sentence. However, there’s a twist – my card will be mixed up with cards from other players, making it a bit more challenging.
SETTING UP THE GAME
To start the game, we each choose a rabbit and place it on the 0 square of the score track. Then, the deck of 84 pictures is shuffled, and 6 cards are given to each player. The remaining pictures go into the draw pile. After that, we each take voting tokens based on the number of players, with each token having a specific value. For example, if we’re playing with 5 players, we each receive 5 voting tokens numbered 1 to 5.
Let’s Play!
The Player in Charge
Alright, it’s my turn to be the storyteller in this game. I’ve got six pictures in my hand, and I need to choose one to base my sentence on. But here’s the catch – I can’t show anyone else my picture!
So, I think about the images I have and come up with a sentence. It can be as short or as long as I want, or even just a sound that represents something. It can be something I make up or something from a poem, song, movie, or even a proverb. The possibilities are endless!
Determining the First Storyteller
Once I started playing this game, I was immediately hooked. It’s a game of creativity and imagination that keeps everyone engaged and entertained. Let me tell you how it works.
The first thing we do is choose who will be the storyteller for the first round. That person is in charge of coming up with a phrase that the rest of us will try to illustrate with our pictures. It’s a big responsibility, but also a lot of fun.
After the storyteller announces their phrase, the rest of us look through our collection of pictures and choose the one that we think best represents the phrase. We don’t show our chosen picture to anyone else, we keep it a secret.
Once we’ve all made our choices, we give our picture to the storyteller. The storyteller then shuffles all the pictures they’ve collected, including their own, and lays them out on the table for everyone to see. Each picture is assigned a number, starting from the left.
Now, it’s time for the guessing game. We all try to figure out which picture belongs to the storyteller. We take turns pointing to the picture we think is the correct one and explaining why we chose it. It’s a lot of fun to hear everyone’s interpretations and see how different people can have different ideas about the same phrase.
Once we’ve all made our guesses, the storyteller reveals which picture was theirs. If we guessed it correctly, we earn points. But if nobody guessed it, or if everybody guessed it, the storyteller doesn’t earn any points, and neither do we. It’s a tricky balance between being clear enough with your phrase so that someone can guess it, but also vague enough to stump everyone.
Then, it’s time for the next round. We choose a new storyteller, and the game continues. It’s a game that never gets old thanks to the unlimited combinations of phrases and pictures.
So, if you’re looking for a game that will unleash your creativity and challenge your thinking, you’ll love this one. Grab your friends and get ready to dive into a world of imagination and laughter.
Remember, the key to success in this game is to think outside the box and let your imagination run wild. The more unique and unexpected your picture is, the better chance you have of fooling your friends and earning those precious points.
Discovering the Master Storyteller
The Big Decision
My job is to uncover the picture of the master storyteller from a collection of revealed pictures. This means I have to make my choice secretly, without the storyteller’s involvement. To accomplish this, I simply place my voting token face down in front of me, indicating my chosen picture. Once everyone has cast their votes, we reveal them by placing them on the corresponding pictures. It’s at this point that the storyteller unveils which picture was actually theirs. However, there’s a rule we must abide by: we cannot vote for our own pictures! It’s all about discovering the truth through observation and deduction.
Scoring Points
- If all of us manage to find the storyteller’s picture, or if none of us find it, then the storyteller doesn’t earn any points. However, the rest of us score 2 points each for our keen eyes and good guesses.
Alright, let me give it a shot:
Here’s the deal: when we play this game, we all become storytellers. We have these cool picture cards, and our goal is to tell a story based on one of the cards. But it’s not just about telling a story; it’s about making it interesting and, most importantly, making others believe it!
- I get 3 points if everyone votes for my card and no one guesses which card is really mine.
- Everyone else gets 1 point for each vote they get on their card, except me, of course. I don’t get any extra points for my card.
After we’re done voting, we move our rabbit tokens along the score track. Each point we earned moves us ahead on the track. The more points you get, the farther you go!
You and your friends are ready to embark on an exciting storytelling adventure! As the green player, I get 3 points because one of the yellow players found my picture. How exciting!
But wait, there’s more! The yellow player found my picture as the fourth one, earning them 3 points. And thanks to the blue player, they also get an additional point. That’s pretty amazing!
The blue player also gets a point, courtesy of the white player. It’s always nice to receive some recognition for your creativity.
Unfortunately, the white player didn’t score any points this round. Don’t worry, there’s always next time!
Now, let’s talk about the end of the round. Each player will complete their hand with 6 pictures. Are you ready for the next round? The storyteller will be the player on the left side of the previous one, continuing in a clockwise direction for the rest of the game.
As we continue playing, keep in mind that the game will end when we draw the last card from the pile or when a player reaches the end of the scoring track. The player with the most points at the end is crowned the ultimate winner. So, put on your storytelling hat and let’s see who comes out on top!
Before we go, here are some tips to enhance your gameplay:
1. Be creative and think outside the box when describing your pictures.
2. Pay attention to what the other players might choose, and try to match their hints.
3. Use your imagination and have fun!
Now, let the storytelling begin!
When I describe my picture too accurately, everyone can easily guess it, and I won’t earn any points. But if my description is unrelated to my picture, no one will choose my card, and again, I won’t get any points! So, my challenge as the storyteller is to come up with a sentence that’s neither too detailed nor too vague, so that only a few players can correctly guess my picture. It might be challenging at first, but you’ll find that inspiration strikes more easily after a few rounds of the game!
DIFFERENT WAYS TO PLAY
In a game of Dixit with three players, we each have seven cards instead of six. And when it’s our turn to be the storyteller, we give two pictures instead of just one. But here’s the catch: out of the five pictures on display, the storyteller’s picture has to be one of them. It adds a little twist to the game.
Now, let’s talk about scoring. Normally, when only one player correctly guesses the storyteller’s picture, they both score three points. But in our version, they both score four points. It’s a little bonus for getting it right!
Here’s an exciting variant called Mimes or Songs. Instead of saying a sentence to describe their picture, the storyteller has the option to hum a tune or do a mime that relates to the picture. It’s a creative way to spice things up! And the other players still have to find the storyteller’s card based on the clue. The scoring remains the same.
I hope you enjoy these variations of Dixit! They add an extra layer of fun to an already great game. And by the way, if you’re looking for more gaming tips and tricks, you should check out Amber.
