Catego: The Simple Dice Game

Hey there! Have you ever heard of Catego? It’s a really cool dice game that was created by a super talented game designer named Reiner Knizia way back in 1990. Reiner, who comes all the way from Germany, is famous for creating a bunch of awesome board games that people love to play.

When you play Catego, the goal is to grab the highest number on the scorecard. The higher your number, the more points you earn! It’s a simple but exciting game that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

How to Play

So, who gets to go first in Catego? Well, it’s time to roll the dice! Each player rolls the dice, and the person with the highest total goes first. Simple as that!

Now, before you start playing, you’ll need a scorecard. You can print one out or just draw one on a piece of scrap paper. Each player will have their own row of scoreboxes on the scorecard.

When we play the game, our main goal is to collect as many points as we can. We do this by rolling the dice and putting the total into one of our scoreboxes. Each box has a different number of points it’s worth. The player who gets the highest total for a scorebox gets those points added to their score.

I start the game by rolling both dice. Then I have to choose which scorebox to use for the total that I rolled. I can pick any available box in my row. Once I’ve made my choice, it’s the next player’s turn.

Now it’s the second player’s turn. They roll the dice and pick an empty scorebox to put their total. They have to use the total they rolled, and they can’t skip a turn.

And we keep playing like this for eleven rounds. By the end of those rounds, the scorecard will be filled up.

If you want to play the game with 3 or 4 players, you can do that too. In a four-player game, you can form teams of two, which adds another twist to the game. Each player still has their own row, but now the team total is used to determine who earns the points.

HOW TO WIN

After you have completed all eleven rounds, it’s time to tally up the score. Go through each level of points and circle the scorebox that has the highest total. If both players have the same total in both of their scoreboxes, neither player earns points. Then, calculate each player’s points earned. The player with the highest total is declared the winner of the game.
