Cangkul – learn how to play on

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to the world of Cangkul!

Cangkul is a fun and exciting card game that can be played with 3 to 5 players. It’s a bit similar to another game called Burro, but with its own unique twists. In Cangkul, the goal is simple: be the first player to play all your cards and empty your hand. And how do you do that? By playing and winning tricks!

Let’s Get Started: Setup

To begin a game of Cangkul, you need a dealer. You can choose someone randomly, or take turns being the dealer in subsequent rounds. The dealer shuffles the deck of cards and then deals each player a hand of 7 cards, one card at a time. The dealing goes clockwise, so everyone gets a fair chance. The remaining cards form the draw deck, and they go in the center of the table, facedown.

Knowing the Card Rankings

In Cangkul, the cards follow a traditional ranking system. The Ace card is the highest, followed by King, Queen, Jack, and so on, all the way down to 2 as the lowest. There are no trump suits in this game, so you’ll need strategy and skill to win!

Time to Play: Gameplay

Once the game starts, it’s your turn to play. You’ll be the first one to make a move, and then it’ll go in a circle, clockwise from you. What you do is pick a card from your hand and play it. The other players have to play a card of the same suit. But here’s the tricky part: if they don’t have a card that matches the suit, they have to draw cards from the deck until they find one. Once they have a matching card, they can play it. This process keeps on going until everyone has played a card of that suit. The player with the highest-ranking card wins that round. All the cards in that round go aside, and the winner gets to start the next round with any card from their hand. Just like before, everyone else has to play a card of the same suit. This keeps on happening until the game is over.

If I can’t follow suit and I draw the last card from the draw pile without finding a card of that suit, my turn will be skipped, and I won’t be able to play a card. The same thing happens if I have to draw a card and the draw pile is already empty. Instead of putting the trick aside, the player who couldn’t play a card receives the cards from the trick.

If there are multiple players that are affected, then each player takes one card from the trick, starting with the first player who couldn’t play a card, until all the cards are in someone’s hand.

Let me walk you through an example to help you understand how the game works. So, we have four players – Player One, Player Two, Player Three, and Player Four. Player One starts the game by playing a 5 of clubs. Then, it’s Player Two’s turn, and they play a 3 of clubs. But wait, Players Three and Four can’t play any cards because the draw pile is empty, and they don’t have any clubs. So, Player One wins the trick. As a result, Player Two doesn’t draw any cards, but Player Three draws the 5 of clubs, and Player Four draws the 3 of clubs. Now, it’s Player One’s turn to lead the next trick.

Let’s Wrap It Up!

Now, let’s talk about how the game ends. The game comes to a close when a player successfully gets rid of all their cards, leaving them with an empty hand. When this happens, that player becomes the winner. However, the game can also be played in a different way – to find the loser. In this case, the loser is the player who is left with cards still remaining in their hand when everyone else has played out all their cards. So, it’s all about emptying your hand and becoming the ultimate champ!

Now that you have a good understanding of the game, let’s get started! Are you ready to play and have some fun?
