Welcome to Calamityville!
Step back in time to the exciting era of the gold rush! In this game, you have the opportunity to build your own town and watch it thrive with the income from gold. But be warned – when the gold rush eventually comes to an end, your town may go broke. And that’s not all – there’s a mischievous donkey that lives in the middle of the game board. Watch out for the “Donkey Goes Wild” card, because it can destroy your buildings! To succeed, you’ll need to save your money, protect your buildings, and collect as much gold as you can.
Setting Up the Game
Place the game board in the center of the playing area. Shuffle the newspaper cards and place them on the board in their assigned space. Each player will choose a marker to represent them during the game. Make sure to place your marker on the train station. Finally, one player is assigned the important role of the banker.
Alright, let’s get started! When we begin the game, each player will have two thousand dollars. We need to shuffle the gold nuggets and place them face down in the river. Oh, and don’t forget to put the wild donkey in the middle of the corral on the game board. Now we’re all set to begin!
Here’s How to Play
So, I’ll start at the train station, and then we’ll take turns going clockwise around the group. On your turn, you’ll roll the dice. If you roll a newspaper, you’ll draw the top newspaper card and read it aloud. Follow the instructions on the card, and then move your piece a number of spaces equal to the number on the die. If you don’t roll a newspaper, just move your piece without any extra steps. Oh, and remember to discard the newspaper card after you’ve read it.
In this game, if I land on an empty space on the board, I can buy property for 200 dollars. The bank will give me the deed and I’ll have to pay rent if I land on a space that someone already owns. I can also customize vacant spaces with different things for my benefit.
If the newspaper card mentions the “Donkey Goes Wild,” the donkey will target any property except mines. It has to stay in the corral and can only knock down one building at a time. If I run out of money, I’m out of the game and my properties go back to the bank. The game keeps going until all the gold in the town runs out.
END OF GAME
When the newspaper card says the gold has run out, the game ends. The properties become worthless and the town turns into a ghost town just as quickly as it was built. We count our money and the player with the most wins!
