Buck euchre – learn to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Buck Euchre

Buck Euchre is an exciting twist on the classic Turn Up Euchre game. It takes the challenge up a notch! In this fun and strategic trick-taking game, four players compete to win tricks. Each player aims to capture at least one trick, but things get intense when the player who called trump must take at least three tricks. At the start of the game, each player has 25 points, and points are deducted for failing to meet the trick requirement. If you’re not feeling confident about winning a trick, no problem – you can opt out of the round.

About the Cards and the Deal

Hey there! Let me tell you about Buck Euchre, a super fun card game that uses a special deck of 24 cards. It’s perfect for a group of friends or family to enjoy together!

In Buck Euchre, you’ll find cards ranging from 9 to Ace, and each suit has its own pecking order. The trump suit is the boss, and for the non-trump suits, 9 is at the bottom and the mighty Ace is at the top. Interestingly, one of the specialized twists in this game is that the Jacks have a special role. There’s a Jack of the same color as the trump suit called the “left bower,” which is second only to the Ace. And of course, the Jack of the trump suit itself, known as the “right bower,” is the absolute ruler of the deck!

Here’s how we get started: I’ll be the dealer and I’ll give each player 5 cards. But wait, there’s a little surprise! I’ll give them out in two different batches—first, two cards each, and then three more. The rest of the cards go face down on the table, except for the top one, which I’ll flip over. This lucky card will tell us which suit gets to be the trump suit for this round. If it’s a Club, boom, Clubs it is! But if it’s one of the other suits—spades, diamonds, or hearts—then it’s decision time!

Here’s the deal—Order Up or Pass!

Let’s start the game! I’m the dealer, and I’ll give each player a chance to decide if they want the turn up card to be trump or not. The turn up card is the card that’s face up on the table.

Starting with the player on my left, they’ll look at the turn up card and decide. If they want that suit to be trump, they’ll tell me to pick it up. If they don’t want it to be trump, they’ll say pass.

If the player tells me to pick up the card, I’ll do that and then place a card from my hand face down on the table. The suit of the turn up card will then become trump for the rest of the round.

But what happens if everyone (including me) decides to pass? In that case, I’ll turn the turn up card face down. We’ll go around the table one more time, giving each player another chance to declare a trump suit or pass. If everyone passes again, we’ll play the hand without a trump suit.

I want to talk to you about an interesting card game called “trump.” Have you ever heard of it? It’s a game where each player has the chance to drop out of a round if they want to. Let me explain how it works.

First, let’s determine the trump suit. This is an important part of the game. Once that’s decided, we can move on. The player to the left of the dealer starts the dropping out process, and it goes around the table from there.

If a player decides to drop out, they place their cards face down on the table. They don’t get any penalty points for doing this. It’s a way for them to opt out of the round if they don’t think they have a good hand. However, there’s a catch – if the turn up card is a Club, players are not allowed to drop out.

Now, let’s get to the play itself.

When it’s my turn to play, I can choose any card from my hand. The first player in the round is the one sitting on the left of the dealer. They get to lead the first trick. The other players after that must play a card in the same suit as the one that was led. If they don’t have a card in that suit, they can play any card they want. Remember, if there’s a Jack of the same color as the trump suit, it must be played as if it’s part of the trump suit. The player who wins a trick gets to lead the next one. The game continues like this until all the tricks have been played.

SCORING

To score points, we subtract one point for each trick that we capture. The player who picked the trump suit or ordered it must capture at least three tricks. If they don’t, they get 5 points added to their score.

Alright, here’s the deal:

If you play a round and you don’t capture any tricks, you’ll add five points to your score. Not great, right?

Now, let’s say there’s no trump suit in the hand. Well, in that case, everyone has to capture at least one trick. If you don’t, guess what? You still add five points to your score. Ouch!

But here’s the good news: if you dropped out of the game, you don’t have to worry about adding or subtracting any points – you’re off the hook!

So, who wins?

Simple. The first player to reach zero points or fewer is the winner. But wait, there’s more. If you manage to capture all five tricks in a round, you automatically win the game. Talk about a victory!

Remember, the goal is to keep your score as low as possible. So, make sure to strategize and aim for those tricks while keeping an eye on those points. Good luck!
