BEACH HANDBALL SPORT RULES
Welcome to the exciting world of Beach Handball! If you’re looking for a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping sport, you’ve come to the right place. In Beach Handball, I’ll show you how to ace the game, from understanding the rules to mastering the techniques.
Beach Handball is a thrilling sport that combines the action of traditional handball with the sun, sand, and sea. It’s a game that requires agility, teamwork, and quick thinking. Get ready to dive into the world of Beach Handball and discover the rules that make it an exhilarating experience!
First of all, let’s talk about the basics. In Beach Handball, the aim is to score goals by throwing the ball into the opponent’s net. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins. But it’s not just about scoring goals; you also need to defend your own net and prevent the other team from scoring.
Beach Handball is played on a sandy court, which adds an extra challenge to the game. But don’t worry, I’ve got some tips and tricks to help you navigate the sand like a pro. Since the sand can slow you down, you need to be quick on your feet and agile in your movements. Look for opportunities to outmaneuver your opponents and create openings for your team to score.
Now, let’s talk about some of the key rules of Beach Handball. One of the most exciting aspects of this sport is the variety of ways you can score. From jumping shots to spin shots, there are endless possibilities to surprise your opponents and find the back of the net. But remember, precision is key. Take your time to aim your throws and make sure you hit your targets.
In Beach Handball, you are also allowed to take three steps with the ball before you either pass it or shoot. This gives you the opportunity to showcase your agility and footwork. Keep in mind that the defense is always ready to steal the ball, so don’t hesitate to pass it to a teammate if you’re in a tight spot.
Another important rule in Beach Handball is that you cannot touch the ball with any part of your body below the knee. This means you have to rely on your hands and arms to control and pass the ball. It may take some practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to make incredible plays.
In addition to the rules, it’s also important to understand the spirit of Beach Handball. This sport is all about having fun, working together as a team, and promoting fair play. Respect your opponents, celebrate your successes, and learn from your mistakes. The beach is your playground, so make the most of it!
Now that you know the ins and outs of Beach Handball, it’s time to hit the sandy court and put your skills to the test. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, Beach Handball offers an exciting and thrilling experience like no other. So grab your friends, head to the beach, and get ready for an unforgettable game. I’ll see you on the sand!
Hey there! Do you know about beach handball? It’s this really cool team sport where two teams of four players compete to shoot a ball into the other team’s goal. But here’s the twist – it’s played on sandy courts, has fewer players, and some different rules compared to regular handball.
The story of beach handball began in Italy back in the 1990s, around the same time when beach volleyball was gaining popularity. A clever handball coach named Simonetta Montagni thought, “Why not bring handball to the sandy shores?” So she started experimenting with the game to make it work on the sand.
And guess what? Her idea caught the attention of the new president of the Italian Handball Federation. He saw the potential and asked his coaches to come up with a set of rules for this exciting new game.
When I created the game, my main goal was to transform the many beach volleyball courts into beach handball courts. This meant making the beach version of the sport smaller and including a rectangular scoring area instead of the half-circle one found in traditional handball.
As the sport started to spread across Europe, it eventually made its way to South America. In South America, the sport quickly gained popularity, and in 1995, the European Handball Federation Working Group was formed. Just five years later, in 2000, the first-ever Beach Handball European Championship took place in Gaeta, Italy. Nowadays, the International Handball Federation oversees the sport.
Beach handball was recently featured in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, so it’s only a matter of time before it becomes part of the actual Olympics.
Before 2021, the Norwegian Handball Federation used to issue fines to women’s teams for dress code violations. This practice began with the Norwegian Women’s team but eventually expanded to all teams with female players.
Now, let’s talk about the setup for beach handball.
SETUP
EQUIPMENT
– Goals: The goals used in beach handball have the same size as those used in traditional handball. They are three meters wide (9.9 feet) and two meters high (6.5 feet).
– Handball: Beach handballs are usually the same as traditional handballs. They have a circumference of 58-60 centimeters (22-23 inches) and weigh around 1 pound. Sometimes, waterproof handballs are used for beach handball.
Now, let’s move on to the court.
THE COURT
Did you know that beach handball courts are smaller than traditional handball courts? Beach handball courts are only 27 meters long and 12 meters wide, which is less than half the size of a regular handball court that measures 40 x 20 meters. And, as you can imagine, beach handball courts are made entirely of sand.
Now, here’s an interesting rule. In front of each goal, there’s a shooting line that’s 6 meters away. Only the goalie is allowed to go behind this line, while the other team members have to shoot from beyond it to score. This means that all players, except the goalie, have to stay within a 15 x 12 meter zone in the middle of the court.
GAME FORMAT
When it comes to beach handball games, they follow a best-of-three format. Each set lasts for ten minutes, and the team that scores the most goals in a set wins the set point. If both teams win a set, the third set is played as a shootout. In the shootout, both teams take turns having one-on-one shot attempts at the goal.

SCOREBOARD
Scoring in beach handball is just as easy as it is in regular indoor handball. All you have to do is throw the ball past the opposing team’s goalie and into the net. However, not all throws are created equal when it comes to earning points.
- 1 point – A regular throw that gets past the goalie
- 2 points – A fantastic, eye-catching goal
- 2 points – When the goalie scores a goal
- 2 points – Penalty goals from six meters away

As I mentioned earlier, a beach handball match has two sets, each lasting ten minutes. The team that scores the most goals in a set is declared the winner of that set.
If the score is tied at the end of the set, something exciting happens. It’s called the golden goal rule. Basically, the next team that scores wins the set. It’s like sudden death – whoever scores first, wins.
Now, let’s say both teams have won a set each. In that case, things get really intense. The third set is done as a shootout. And let me tell you, shootouts are adrenaline-pumping! In a shootout, each team gets to pick five players. These five players go head-to-head with the opposing team’s goalie. They each get a pass from their own goalie and then try to score a goal. It’s a one-versus-one situation, and it’s all about skill and strategy.
The team that scores the most goals in the shootout wins the set and ultimately the game. But here’s the catch: what happens if both teams have the same number of shootout goals? Well, the shootout continues until one team makes a shot and the other team misses. It’s a nail-biting moment that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Now, let’s look at some rules that apply to the game:
– Players can’t take more than three steps without dribbling or passing the ball to a teammate. So, no running like crazy!
– Only the goalies are allowed to enter the six-meter scoring box. They’re the ones who guard the goal and make those amazing saves.
So, as you can see, the game can be filled with twists and turns. It’s all about strategy, skill, and that rush of adrenaline. So, get ready to experience the thrill of the game and witness some spectacular shootouts!
- I can shoot from within the scoring box if I throw the ball while in mid-air after jumping from beyond the line. It’s a cool way to score!
- I can only use my hands to touch the ball. No feet or legs allowed! It’s all about hand-eye coordination.
- I have to be careful not to be too physical on defense. Excessive physicality is against the rules.
- The defenders can’t slap the ball out of my hands. That’s not fair play.
- I can’t pass the ball to my own goalie. I have to find another way to set up a play.
- If the ball stays in the sand for more than three seconds, it’s considered a turnover. I need to keep the ball moving!
- Goalkeepers are special. They don’t have to follow the dribbling rules when they are in their goal zones.
- It’s really exciting when the goalie scores! Their goal is worth 2 points, which is more than a normal goal.
NO DRIBBLING
Did you know that dribbling is a crucial part of regular handball? Just like in basketball, I have to bounce the ball on the ground while I’m moving with it. But here’s an interesting twist: in regular handball, I’m allowed to take three steps between dribbles. That means the ball isn’t on the ground as much as in basketball.
Now, let’s talk about beach handball. Picture this: there’s a sand court instead of a regular court. And guess what? It’s nearly impossible to dribble the ball on sand. Why? Well, the ball loses all its momentum on the sand, so bouncing it doesn’t work. As a result, dribbling is almost non-existent in beach handball. Instead, teams rely heavily on passing to make their way up and down the court.

END OF GAME
When it comes to handball, the ultimate goal is to score more points than the opposing team. Victory is achieved by winning two out of the three total sets. However, in the event of a tie, a tie break is held. This entails the goalie throwing the ball to one of their teammates, who then takes on the opposing goalie in a one-on-one attempt to score.
I absolutely love writing, and one of my passions is inspiring people to have fun and engage in games. For three years, I organized a pub crawl where I hosted drinking games on a regular basis. It was an amazing experience, as I had the opportunity to connect with my guests and create memorable moments. My enthusiasm for games comes naturally to me, thanks to my large game-loving family.
In addition to my love for games, I am also an avid traveler and music enthusiast. I have started personal blogs dedicated to exploring my two passions, travel and music. Through my writing, I hope to share the joy and excitement of these experiences with others.
