Introduction to All Fives
All Fives is a fun card game that belongs to the trick-taking genre. It’s actually a variation of another game called All Fours. All Fives is also played with dominoes, but we’re focusing on the card version here.
The Deal and Trumps
At the start, each player is handed six cards, which are given out in groups of three. Once everyone has their full hand, we set aside the remaining deck. Then, the top card from that deck is flipped over. We use that card as a possible trump card.
When we play a card game called “trump,” the player on the left side of the dealer gets to choose the trump suit. They have two options: they can either accept the top card on the deck as the trump, or they can ask for a new one. If the dealer doesn’t agree to give them a new trump, that player gets a point, and the game begins. But the dealer can choose to replace the current trump card with a new one if they want to. In that case, they’ll deal three more cards to each player and reveal a new trump card. This process can go on until everyone agrees on a new trump card.
Now, let’s talk about how to play the game.
The game starts with the player on the left side of the dealer. Each player gets to play one card, and they must follow the suit that was led if they have a card of that suit. The player who has the highest-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick. But if a player can’t follow suit, they have two choices: they can either play any card they want or play a trump card. A trump card is a special card from the trump suit, and it outranks all other suits. The highest-ranking trump card wins the trick. The winner of the previous trick gets to lead in the next one.
In a game, I continue playing until all the cards in my hand are played or until I have taken all the tricks.
Scoring
To score, I add up the number of trumps played and the number of tricks I have won.
Trumps:
A queen is worth 2 points.
To win the game, I need to be the first player to score 60 or more points. If two players both reach 60 points in the same round, the player with the highest score wins.
