Abroasta – learn to play with

ABROASTA

Welcome to Abroasta, a thrilling card game that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Created by the brilliant minds of Tom Acker and Rachel Secenghier, this hand-shedding race is designed for four players.

The objective of Abroasta is simple: be the first to get rid of all the cards in your hand. Once you accomplish this impressive feat, it’s time to slap the smallest discard pile on the table. But wait, there’s a twist! As soon as one pile is slapped, all the other players scramble to claim what they think is the smallest of the remaining piles.

While Abroasta can technically be played with more or fewer than four players, the rules and gameplay are smoothest with a quartet. Adding more players can make things a bit more complicated. If you’re curious about the details for different player counts, click here.

THE CARDS & THE DEAL

In the game of Abroasta, four players use a regular deck of 52 French cards. To start, decide who will deal the cards, mix them well, and then distribute thirteen cards to each player face down. It’s important not to look at the cards you receive. After each round, the dealing responsibility moves to the next player on the left.

Once all the cards have been handed out, the dealer initiates the start of the game by saying “go!”

THE PLAY

The game begins with the Aces. The objective is to play the cards in ascending order as quickly as possible. Initially, you place the Aces on the table to form four separate piles, regardless of the suit. Remember, you are only allowed to play one card at a time. The play continues until one of the players successfully gets rid of all the cards in their hand.

When you play this game, the goal is to get rid of all your cards first. But here’s the twist: you have to keep an eye out for the smallest pile of cards and be ready to claim it!

Once you’ve emptied your hand, it’s time to slap and grab that tiny pile. But don’t forget, the other piles are fair game too! The players who still have cards in their hands should forget about those cards and focus on claiming the next smallest piles.

The first player to snatch up a pile gets to keep it. So be quick and nimble!

SCORING

For every card you claim, you earn 1 point. But remember, the cards left in your hand don’t count as points – except for the 4 of Clubs! If you’re stuck with that card at the end of the round, you’ll earn an extra 8 points.

WINNING

The game keeps going until one or more players reach 100 points. Once that happens, the player with the lowest score is the winner. So aim for low points and victory will be yours!
