Welcome to the Just One Game!
I’m here to explain the rules in a way that’s easy for you to understand.
First, I’ll tell you the objective. The goal of the Just One Game is to score as many points as possible by guessing the right words. Sounds fun, right?
Now let’s talk about how the game is played. In each round, you will take turns being the guesser. The guesser will close their eyes while the other players choose a word. Once the word has been chosen, everyone else will write a one-word clue on their whiteboards.
Once all the clues are ready, the guesser opens their eyes and tries to guess the word based on the clues provided. But here’s the twist – if any of the clues match, they get crossed out, leaving only unique clues for the guesser to decipher. This adds an element of surprise and mystery to the game!
You might be wondering how to score points. After each round, the guesser earns one point for each correct guess. However, there’s a catch! If the guesser gets the word wrong or if any clue matches, no points are earned.
The fun doesn’t stop there! At the end of the game, all the players will add up their points. The player with the most points wins!
Now that you know the rules, grab some friends or family members, and let the guessing begin! Have a blast playing the Just One Game!

Welcome to Just One, a fun and interactive cooperative party game where we work together to achieve the highest score!
In this game, our goal is for one player, known as the active player, to guess a Mystery word. The excitement lies in the fact that each of us secretly writes a clue on our easel, without coordinating with each other.
It’s essential to be creative and original when choosing our clues. We wouldn’t want to write the same clue as someone else because identical clues get canceled before the active player sees them.
Once the game ends, we calculate our score based on the number of Mystery words we managed to find.
How to Set Up

- I’m gonna shuffle the cards and randomly draw 13 cards. These are gonna be our face-down deck in the middle of the table. The rest of the cards can go back in the box; we’re not gonna need them for this game.
- Each player gets an easel and a fancy erasable marker.
- We need to pick a player to be the first active player. Let’s choose someone randomly.
Game Time
The game is all about taking turns, and it goes on until we run out of cards in the deck.
Each turn has 4 parts:
- We gotta choose the mystery word. This is the word that we’re gonna help the active player guess, without saying the actual word.
- Now it’s time to pick some clues. Each player is gonna write down a clue on their easel to help the active player figure out the mystery word.
- Once we’ve all written down our clues, we’ll compare them and see if any are too similar or repetitive. We wanna make sure we have a good mix of different clues.
- Finally, it’s time for the big guess. The active player is gonna try to say the mystery word, using all the clues we’ve given them. Let’s see if they can get it right!
Choose The Mystery Word
Imagine this: you’re playing a card game. It’s your turn and you can’t wait to see what card you’ll get. You reach for the deck and draw the top card.
But there’s a twist – you can’t look at the card yourself. Instead, you place it on your easel for everyone else to see. The words written on the card are there for all to behold.
One side of the easel has a support that holds the card in place, making it easy for everyone to read and interpret the words.
This simple action has significant importance. It adds suspense, mystery, and a touch of creative flair to the game. It’s fascinating to see how different people interpret the words and come up with unique ideas.
No two players will interpret the words in the same way. Each person brings their own perspective and imagination to the card, resulting in a range of interpretations that spark conversation, laughter, and boundless creativity.
So, here’s what happens: I pick a number between 1 and 5, and that number tells you the Mystery word you have to give a clue for.
Remember: If you don’t know the chosen word, just ask me to pick a different number.
Choosing Clues
Now, pay attention! Without talking to each other or showing anyone, each player writes down one clue on their easel. But here’s the catch: your clue can only be one word. It can be a digit, a number, an acronym, an onomatopoeia, or a special character. Yup, all those count as words.
For example: If I pick 007, that can help someone guess Bond. Or if I pick Riiiiiinnng or SMS, those can help someone guess Telephone. And don’t forget, even the character $ can help someone guess America.
Clues that Won’t Work
Can you believe that some clues are just not allowed in the game? It’s true! Let me tell you about a few words that you can’t use when trying to make someone guess the mystery word.
First off, the word might look very similar to the mystery word, but it’s actually written in a completely different way. For example, if the word you’re trying to guess is “Shirt,” you can’t use a clue like “Shurt.” It has to be the exact word.
Secondly, using a word from a different language is also a no-no. Let’s say the word you’re trying to guess is “Shrub.” You can’t use a clue like “Buisson” because it’s written in French, not English.
Another thing to avoid is using a word that belongs to the same family as the mystery word. Say the word you’re supposed to guess is “Prince.” You can’t use a clue like “Princess” because they’re in the same family.
You also can’t use made-up words. So if the word you’re trying to guess is “Cake,” using a clue like “Swee’ting” won’t work. It has to be a real word.
Lastly, you can’t use a word that sounds the same as the mystery word but has a different meaning. For example, if you’re trying to guess the word “Weather,” you can’t use a clue like “Whether.” They might sound the same, but their meanings are different.
So you see, there are a few rules when it comes to giving clues in the game. Make sure you keep these in mind, and you’ll be all set to play!
Comparing Clues
Now that we’ve all written our clues, it’s time for an intriguing moment. I’ll close my eyes, and you’ll flip your easels around to compare your clues with each other. Look closely and find any clues that are the same or just don’t make sense. We’ll cancel those clues by tipping over the easel to hide them.
The Same Clues
There are a few ways that clues can be considered the same in the game of Just One:
- Identical words: When two clues are exactly the same word, like “Mouse” and “Mouse”.
- Word variants: Clues that are from the same word family, like “Prince” and “Princess”. These are also considered the same.
- Variations of a word: Plurals, different genders, and spelling mistakes are not counted as actual differences. For example, “Princes” and “Prince”, “Actor” and “Actress”, and “Philosophy” and “Filosofie” are all the same.
Note: If all the clues have been cancelled, put the card with the Mystery word back in the box and move on to the End of Turn phase.
Make Your Guess
So, once we’ve eliminated any identical or invalid clues, we can move on to the next step. The active player will now open their eyes and take their best shot at guessing the Mystery word. But here’s the catch – they only get one guess. That’s it!
The Outcome
Success
If the active player manages to correctly guess the Mystery word, they should proudly place this card face up next to the deck. Victory!
Failure
However, if the active player’s guess is wrong, it’s time for some tough luck. They must return this card, along with the top card of the deck, back to the game box. Better luck next time!
Skip
If the active player doesn’t feel like taking a shot at the Mystery word, they have the option to skip their turn. In that case, they need to return this card to the game box. Maybe they’ll have better luck next round.
- When I’m playing the game, if my guess sounds the same as the Mystery word, it’s a valid guess.
- During the final turn, if I guess wrong, I also have to remove a card that I previously guessed correctly.
After My Turn
After my turn, the player on my left becomes the new active player and a new turn starts.
Remember: I have to clear my old clue before starting a new turn.
Ending the Game
The game ends when there are no more cards left in the deck.
To calculate my score, I count how many cards I guessed correctly and compare it to the score table provided.
| 13 | Wow! You nailed it! Can you keep up the incredible work? |
