Have you ever heard of 12 Beads? It’s a cool strategy game that’s been around for a long time, with its origins in South Asia. People in different countries call it different names, like “Bara Tehni” in Pakistan and India, and “Baro Guti” in Bangladesh. But no matter what you call it, the game is always played with two players.
CONTENTS
The game board for 12 Beads is really interesting. It’s a square-shaped board with 16 mini boxes, and there’s a big diamond shape that goes through all of them. Each mini box has four corners where you can put your beads.
Since it’s a game for two players, each player gets 12 beads in their favorite color. For example, you might choose red beads, while your opponent chooses green beads.
Setting Up the Game
Welcome to a game of strategy and skill! In this game, we have a board with 25 slots or positions where colorful beads can be placed. Each player has their own set of beads – Player one and Player two.
At the beginning of the game, Player one places their beads either on the upper or lower side of the board, but not both. Player two does the same, but on the opposite side of Player one’s formation. Look at the photo above to see how it looks. You’ll notice that the center position is empty when we start.
How to Play
Now, let’s talk about how the game works. Each player takes turns moving one of their beads. The player who moves first is decided by a coin toss. Whoever wins the toss gets to go first and move one of their beads.
When it’s your turn, you can move your bead along the positions on the board by following the vertical or horizontal lines. Make your moves wisely, because every move matters! Strategy and careful thinking will help you outsmart your opponent and win the game!
When playing the game, the main objective is to get rid of all the opponent’s beads. Now, let me explain how you can eliminate your opponent’s beads. You have the power to remove your opponent’s bead when your own bead lands on an empty spot, right after your opponent’s bead.
To make things clearer, take a look at these images that show the rules of the game. In this first image, player two (represented by the color green) has just moved one of their beads. Since there is only one spot left in the center at the beginning of the game, they had to move their bead to that position.
So let’s talk about the game. It’s all about getting rid of the other beads. Right now, it’s your turn, and you’re the red player. What you want to do is find a spot that’s empty and right after where your opponent’s bead is. The trick is that you have to cross over the opponent’s bead and then place your own on the empty spot. And look, one of your red beads found the perfect place, right after your opponent’s bead. Take a look at the picture to see what happens next.
In the game, when it’s my turn, I get to choose if I want to cross over one of the opponent’s beads.
If I decide to cross over, I have to make sure that I land just after the position that’s straight across from where I started.
When I do this, it means I’ve removed one of the opponent’s beads.
Take a look at the picture below to see what it looks like after I’ve made my move:
Alright, now it’s time for player two (green) to make a move. They have a chance to get rid of one of the opponent’s beads that just landed on an empty spot. Player two can do this by crossing over and eliminating one of the red beads, like this:
So here’s how it works: when the green bead crosses over the red bead, the red one gets kicked out of the game. Then, the green bead moves to the center of the board. After that, it’s player one’s (the red player’s) turn, and the game keeps going.
TO WIN
If you want to win, all you have to do is eliminate all of your opponent’s beads before they can eliminate yours.
A TWIST
In some parts of South Asia, they play this game a little differently. Instead of using a board, they just draw some lines on a piece of paper, like the ones on the board, and start playing. It’s a popular game in that region.
