Surviving Avalon is no walk in the park! If you or your buddies want a more laid-back experience and just want to enjoy the story without the fear of failing, follow these steps and handle any adjustable situations as if there was one less person in your group.
For example: Let’s say three players activate a Menhir and read the message: “Set the Dial to 8 (-1 for each player)”. Since they opted for an easier time, they would actually set the Dial to 6 instead of 5.
Hey there! Listen up, because I’ve got some important info for you. So, when you’re playing this game called Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, you have the option to make things easier for yourself by adjusting the scaling. But here’s the thing: you can only make it easier, not harder. To make it even easier, you can remove this piece of plastic that limits the game, and simply use a regular marker instead. By doing this, your health won’t be a limiting factor anymore, and you won’t get all panicked during combat or diplomacy. So, it’s like having a superhero mode activated! Pretty cool, right?
Oh, and let me tell you about this thing called Challenge Mode. It’s like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s challenging and will really test your skills. But on the other hand, it can also be really rewarding and give you a sense of accomplishment. So, if you’re up for a real challenge, you should definitely give it a try. Just remember to keep your cool and stay focused. Good luck!
If you and your group are up for an extra challenge and already know the game well, you might want to make things even harder. Here are some rule changes that will make the game more unforgiving and challenging. Keep in mind that you can choose to apply only some of these changes for an intermediate experience!
Setting Up
- Flip the limiter plastic piece upside down for each player, so that the top of the heart icon points to the bottom of the track. This will make everyone more vulnerable to damage, increasing the realism of wounds. It will also limit self-recovery, forcing players to rely more on teamwork and risk management.
- At the start of the game, take Secret card 42. The people of the island will distrust you, making all Diplomatic engagements more difficult.
Getting Away from Battle
Imagine this: you find yourself surrounded by the chaos of war. Bullets whiz by, explosions shake the ground beneath your feet, and fear grips your heart. The instinct to survive overwhelms you, and you frantically search for an escape route. But how do you navigate such a perilous situation? How do you find safety amidst the turmoil?
The first thing you should do is stay calm. I know, easier said than done when bombs are going off around you. But panic will only cloud your judgment and lead to rash decisions. Take a deep breath, focus your mind, and assess the situation. Look for any cover or hiding spots nearby that could shield you from harm.
Once you’ve identified a potential hiding spot, move quickly but quietly. Walking or running in a straight line might make you an easy target. Instead, use zigzag movements to make it harder for the enemy to hit you. Keep low to the ground, moving from one piece of cover to another. Stay out of sight as much as possible.
If you have a firearm, use it sparingly and strategically. Firing recklessly will only draw more attention to yourself. Aim carefully, conserve your ammunition, and take shots only when you have a clear target. Remember, stealth and survival are your top priorities.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a comrade with you, coordinate your movements. Teamwork can greatly increase your chances of escaping unscathed. Communicate quietly, using hand signals or whispers. Watch each other’s backs and provide cover fire when needed.
Remember, in the face of combat, your survival and the survival of others are what matter most. Keep your wits about you, move with purpose, and never lose sight of your goal: getting away from battle.
Escape: You can try to escape once per turn. To do so, you need to lose 1 energy. After that, you will receive an opportunity attack and roll one of the following:
- Skull: You’ll remain in combat.
- Grail: You’ll successfully escape from combat. Put the encounter card at the bottom of its deck and shuffle your combat deck, including any discarded cards.
Menhir Events
- When activated, the duration of all menhirs is reduced by 1 day. You’ll have less time to explore and gather resources!
- When the game instructs you to place random event cards, place 1 less than indicated. Negative consequences will come faster.
Character Advancement
Experience costs are different. Use the list below instead:
- 5 Exp: Progress in Combat or Diplomacy deck (draw 2 cards and choose 1)
- 5 Exp: First point in opposing Attributes
- 10 Exp: Second point in opposing Attributes
- 15 Exp: Third point in opposing Attributes
- 20 Exp: Fourth point in opposing Attributes
- 25 Exp: Fifth point in opposing Attributes
- 30 Exp: Sixth point in opposing Attributes
You need 5 extra Exp for each subsequent point in opposing Attributes.
Resources and items
- You can have a maximum of 20 of each Resource (except Exp).
- You can carry up to 5 Items (Secrets are not included in this limit).
Allmother’s Mercy
When it comes to the Challenge mode, there’s no room for mercy. If I happen to die, the entire campaign ends in failure. It’s a high-stakes game that requires careful planning and skill.
In contrast, the Free Play mode offers more freedom and flexibility. Right from the beginning, I can place any Character tile in any Character Tray, even if they wouldn’t be available in the current campaign. I have the freedom to choose any color of Combat & Diplomacy decks.
This opens up a world of possibilities and allows for exciting combinations and deck building strategies. I can experiment with different characters and decks to find the perfect match.
But here’s something important to keep in mind: If I pick a Character from a different time period or campaign, I won’t be able to progress through that Character’s personal story. Each Character has their own unique journey, and picking the wrong one can limit my overall experience. It’s important to choose characters that align with the campaign I’m playing.
Furthermore, some Characters have special Abilities that are specifically designed for a particular campaign. These Abilities might make certain parts of other campaigns easier than intended. It’s like having a secret advantage in a game that others may not have.
So, whether I’m facing the unforgiving Challenge mode or exploring the boundless possibilities of Free Play, I must choose my path wisely. Each mode offers its own set of challenges and rewards, and with the right approach, I can triumph in any circumstance.
