Welcome to the Trickerion Content Breakdown!
Let me give you a quick overview of the different components in the game. You can always refer back to this section, but keep in mind that these rules are just a summary. For more details, you can find everything in the Game Phases chapter.
Whenever there are game elements or concepts that are not part of the base game, they will be highlighted in a different color.
Trick Cards
There are four categories of trick cards:
Magic Tricks are at the heart of Trickerion. The game revolves around mastering these Tricks, acquiring the necessary Components, getting ready, and ultimately blending them together to create awe-inspiring Performances on stage.
Preparing and performing tricks requires different components. In Trickerion, there are three types of components: Basic, Advanced, and Superior. These components can be purchased from the Market Row and stored in the Magician’s Workshop. Each component has a specific cost of 1, 2, or 3 Coins respectively.
You can find detailed rules for components in the Market Row, Workshop, and Prepare Trick sections.
Assignment Cards
Assignment cards are used in the “Assignment” phase to plan your turn. Each card represents a location where a character will be placed. The base game includes four locations: Downtown, Market Row, Workshop, and Theater. The Dark Alley location is not used in the base game. There are two types of assignment cards: Permanent and Special.
Permanent Assignment Cards:
When we start playing, we’re given some special assignment cards to begin with. These cards are an important part of our setup. If we want more assignment cards, we can go to the Dark Alley. In the ‘Assignment’ phase of the game, we’ll learn how to use these cards.
Wooden Character Disks
We also have these wooden disks called Characters. We can place them on the game board during play. The assignment cards help us send these Characters to different Locations. Once there, our Characters can use their Action Points (which we can see on the disks labeled with a 5 symbol) to perform Actions.
Let me tell you about the different types of characters in this game. We have Apprentices, Specialists, and the Magician. Each of these characters has a different number of Action Points they can use. Now, let’s talk about the three sub-types of Specialists: Manager, Assistant, and Engineer.
The Game Board
Here’s the thing, my friend: when it comes to playing this game, you’re going to want to know a few important details. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.
First things first, let’s talk about the locations. You’ll find most of them on the Main Game Board. Each location has slots for characters. These slots can have modifiers (indicated with a “!”) that affect your characters. It’s all about strategy, my friend.
Now, let’s talk about fame points. As you play the game, you’ll earn these points. And guess what? You can immediately see how famous you are on the Fame Track, which goes all the way around the Theater. It’s a cool way to keep track of your success.
The Main Game Board is pretty neat. And get this, it’s double-sided. The side with the black cat symbol is used with the Dark Alley expansion. So, if you’re looking for an extra challenge, you might want to give it a try.
Downtown Dice
Hey there! Let’s talk about these amazing dice. They’re pretty important because we roll them at the start of each turn. Why, you ask? Well, they determine the options we have at the Downtown Location for that turn. Cool, right?
Player Game Boards
The Player Game Board is like the home base for us magicians. It’s where we do all our secret magic stuff. During the ‘Assignment’ phase, we place our Assignment cards on this board. And it’s also where we keep our Components and Tricks. It’s like our own little magical workshop! How awesome is that?
Oh, and here’s the fun part. We can even make our Player Game Board bigger! How? By hiring Specialists. They help us extend it to the right. Now we’ve got even more space to work our magic. It’s like having a super-sized workshop. Who wouldn’t want that?
The Player Game Boards have two sides – one with a black cat symbol and one without. The side with the black cat symbol is specifically designed for use with the Dark Alley expansion.
Specialist Game Board Extensions
The Specialist Game Board Extensions are small boards that extend the Player Game Boards. Each extension is associated with a specific Specialist character.
When playing as the Engineer, you get an extra special trick slot. This means that whenever you prepare a trick, you receive an additional trick marker on it. It’s like having a bonus to your tricks!
Now, if you choose to play as the Manager, you’ll have two multi-component slots. These slots are special because when you have component piles on them, they count as if they consisted of one more of that component. It’s like getting a little extra boost for your components!
And if you decide to be the Assistant, you’ll get an awesome advantage. With the Assistant’s extension, you can have an extra apprentice who doesn’t have to be paid for. So you’ll save some money during the “Pay Wages” phase. It’s a great way to keep your costs down!
When you hire a specialist, you’ll also receive its respective board extension and a wooden character disk. These are placed next to your player board. It’s a nice reward for hiring a specialist, and it adds a new dynamic to the game.
Lastly, let’s talk about the magician cards. They’re an important part of the game. Make sure to read the detailed rules about them.
Hey there! Let’s talk about these awesome cards that represent your favorite Magician. They each have a cool trick category printed above the Magician’s name, and this category comes in handy when you’re learning new tricks.
When you play the Dark Alley expansion, you’ll notice a special feature on one side of the magician poster cards – a black cat symbol. This unique symbol is only used in conjunction with the Dark Alley expansion, adding an extra layer of intrigue and mystery to your game!
What to expect from the Dark Alley expansion
Hey there! Have you ever heard of magician posters? They’re pretty cool! These posters are used to advertise after the ‘Set Initiative Order’ phase, which you can learn more about in the ‘Advertise’ phase.
Player Markers
I want to talk to you about the colored player markers. They are pretty important because they help us keep track of two things: the players’ Initiative Order and their progress on the Fame track. Let me explain.
First, let’s talk about the Initiative Order.
Have you ever wondered who goes first in a game? Well, these colored markers can help us decide. Each player will have a marker that represents them, and we use these markers to determine the order in which they take their turns. The player with the highest Initiative goes first, followed by the player with the next highest Initiative, and so on. It’s like standing in a line – the person at the front goes first, and then it’s the next person’s turn.
This is important because it can give players an advantage. Going first means you get to make your moves before anyone else, giving you a chance to set the tone for the game. It’s like being the leader of a team – you get to make the first move and show everyone how it’s done. But remember, it’s not always about going first – sometimes it’s better to go later and see what other players do before making your move.
Now, let’s move on to the Fame track.
Imagine a race where you’re trying to become famous. Well, in this game, the players are trying to climb up the Fame track and become the most famous. The colored markers help us keep track of how far each player has progressed on this track.
Why is fame important? Well, it’s like a measure of how well you’re doing in the game. The more famous you are, the more people know about you and the more opportunities you have. Plus, being famous can give you special powers or abilities that can help you in the game. It’s like being a celebrity – people recognize you and want to be around you.
So, these colored player markers are pretty cool, right? They not only help us determine the order in which players take their turns, but they also track each player’s progress on the Fame track. It’s like having two tools in one. Now, let’s get ready to play and see who can become the most famous!
Hey there! Let me tell you about the cool stuff in this game. So, in this game, each one of us has these things called Trick Markers. We each have four sets of Trick Markers, and each set has a different symbol. These symbols help us identify the Trick cards. You know what’s even cooler? There’s this thing called a Symbol Marker, which comes with each set of Trick Markers. When we learn a Trick card, we put the Symbol Marker on it and choose the symbol we want for that Trick. Oh, and guess what? During the game, we can even move the Trick Markers from the Trick card onto our Performance cards. How awesome is that?
Performance Cards
In the Theater, you can find these cards that represent Performances. Each Performance is made up of one or more Tricks, which are shown by the Trick Markers on the cards. You can move Trick Markers onto these cards by using the ‘Set Up Trick’ Action in the Theater. The Performances you create this way will earn you Fame points and Coins, which are important in the game. As you progress through the game, the cards in the Theater will represent more prestigious Theaters.
If you have the Dark Alley expansion, you can use the Magnus Pantheon cards. And if you’re playing with the optional two-player Duel of Magicians rules, the Performance cards with gray Trick Markers are used.
Now, let’s talk about Coins. They play a big role in the game.
Hey there! I want to talk to you about coins in Trickerion. They’re pretty important in the game because they’re the basic currency. We’ve got two types: silver coins, worth 1, and gold coins, worth 5.
Now, you might be wondering where you can get these coins. Well, one way is by getting payment during the ‘Performance’ phase. But there are also some other places where you can find them, like the Bank in the Downtown area and Trick Links.
So, what can you do with these coins? Well, you can use them to buy Components at the Market Row and to pay Wages.
But what about Trickerion Shards?
Hey there! Did you know that in the world of Trickerion, there are these cool things called shards? They’re like these magical fragments from the mystical Trickerion Stone, and they’re super important alongside Fame and Coins.
So, how can you get these shards, you ask? Well, they’re actually rewarded to you for doing awesome tricks, creating trick links on certain slots on your performance cards, or having your engineer in the theater when you perform. Pretty neat, huh?
Now, when it comes to spending these shards, in the base game, you can use them to buy more action points. And if you end up with any extra shards at the end of the base game, well, guess what? Each of those shards is worth one fame point. Talk about a cool bonus!
The Trickerion Stone
Hey there! I’m here to introduce you to the amazing and mysterious world of Trickerion. Let’s talk about the Trickerion Stone and the Magician Workbook.
The Trickerion Stone is a special object that plays a crucial role in the game. It acts as the Turn Counter, keeping track of the progress of each turn. After every turn, the stone moves forward one step on the Turn Counter track. It’s like magic unfolding right in front of your eyes!

The Dark Alley Expansion and Its Enigmatic Prophecies
Have you ever heard of prophecies? They are intriguing glimpses into the future that can reveal important information or lead us astray. In the world of games, prophecies play a significant role, adding an extra layer of excitement and mystery.
When you dive into the Dark Alley expansion, you unlock a whole new level of gameplay. This expansion introduces prophecies, which are not part of the base game. Prophecies are like secret messages from the game itself, giving you clues about what’s to come. They add an extra dash of suspense, making each move you make more thrilling and unpredictable.
But be warned – prophecies can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can provide you with valuable insights and guidance, helping you navigate the treacherous paths of the game. On the other hand, they might mislead you, leading you down a dead end or distracting you from the true path.
As you explore the Dark Alley expansion and encounter prophecies, remember to approach them with curiosity and skepticism. Analyze each message carefully, considering different possibilities and outcomes. Don’t take them at face value; instead, view them as riddles to be solved and mysteries to unravel.
Prophecies are designed to elevate your gaming experience, adding an extra layer of intrigue and complexity. They challenge you to think critically and adapt your strategy accordingly. Each prophecy you encounter is an opportunity to test your intuition and analytical skills, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the game.
So, if you’re ready to embark on a thrilling journey filled with enigmatic prophecies, dive into the Dark Alley expansion. But be prepared to navigate the twists and turns of fate, as you decipher the cryptic messages and make your mark on the game.
When it comes to the game, the Prophecy tokens play a significant role. These tokens have the power to change certain rules each turn. Let me explain how they work.
There are four Prophecy tokens in total. The one next to the Turn Track is called the Active Prophecy. It’s the one that affects the game during the current turn. The other three tokens, which you can see inside the crystal ball, are known as Pending Prophecies. They will come into play in the three turns that follow.
If you want a more detailed explanation of how Prophecies work, you can refer to the Magician Workbook that each player receives. It contains all the information you need to understand them.
About Magician Powers
Now, let’s talk about Magician Powers. These powers are an expansion that is not included in the base game. They are only used when playing with the Magician Powers expansion, so keep that in mind. If you’re interested in trying out new abilities and strategies, you might love this expansion.
For more information about the Magician Powers expansion and how to use these powers, you can refer to the Expansions section.
Did you know that every Magician is unique? That’s right! As we work hard to become great Magicians, we acquire incredible abilities that let us specialize in our own magical art. These extraordinary skills are known as Magician Powers.
Starting a Turn
Hey there! Let me explain what Turn Setup cards are all about. So, these special cards are a part of the Duel of Magicians optional rules. They come into the picture at the start of each turn and help us set up the Character slots at different Locations.
