The Characters of Love Letter
The game Love Letter is set in the same world as the games Courtier and Dominare from the Tempest line. Let me introduce you to the different characters you’ll encounter in Love Letter:
- The Princess: She is the daughter of the king and holds great influence. If you can deliver your love letter to her, you may win the game.
- The Countess: This noble woman is in tune with courtly affairs. Holding both rank and status, she can make or break your chances of winning the princess’s heart.
- The King: The ruler of the land and the princess’s father, he wields immense power. Be careful not to let your intentions become known to him.
- The Prince: A kind-hearted prince who seeks true love. If you can reveal his secrets, he may assist you in your quest.
- The Handmaid: A loyal servant and confidante of the princess, she will protect her at all costs. Befriending her may grant you an advantage.
- The Baron: A man of wealth and status, the baron is always looking for an opportunity to increase his fortune. Engaging in conversation with him might prove valuable.
- The Priest: A holy man with insight into the hearts of others. Seek his counsel to uncover the secrets of your fellow suitors.
- The Guard: The royal guard protects the princess from any harm. Gaining his favor could help you eliminate your competitors.
Now that you know the characters in Love Letter, it’s time to play the game and see who will win the princess’s heart!
Level 8: Princess Annette
Princess Annette is a fascinating character, full of youth and innocence. She exudes elegance, charm, and beauty. She’s the kind of princess you would want to help you deliver a letter. However, there’s a catch. She’s quite shy when it comes to matters of the heart. If you confront her and try to give her your letter, she will throw it into the fire and pretend she never saw it. It’s a risky move.
If, for any reason, you happen to lose the Princess along the way, she will unintentionally discard your letter by throwing it into the fire. As a result, you will be disqualified from the round.
7: The Mysterious Countess Wilhelmina
I’m always on the lookout for handsome men and juicy gossip. With my advanced age and noble blood, I am proud to be one of Princess Annette’s dear friends. However, whenever the king or prince is in the vicinity, I tend to disappear like a whisper in the wind.
I’m unlike any other card you’ll find in this game. While most cards have their effect when discarded, my power lies in my presence while you hold me in your hand. I do not have any special ability once discarded.
Now, let me share a secret with you. If you happen to find yourself holding both me – the majestic Countess, and either the fetching King or the charming Prince in your hand, you must swiftly discard me. Here’s the twist, you don’t have to reveal the other card you hold. But hear this, even if you don’t have a royal family member in your hand, you can still choose to let go of the Countess. After all, I do enjoy playing mind games.
6: King Arnaud IV
I am the undisputed ruler of Tempest. At least for now. You see, I made a decision that didn’t sit well with Princess Annette, which has affected our relationship. But I’m determined to win back her affection and regain my rightful place as a father figure in her life.
Here’s the interesting part: when you decide to get rid of me – King Arnaud IV – you have the power to swap the card you’re holding with another player’s card. Of course, there are a few conditions. You can’t do this exchange if the player you want to trade with has already been eliminated from the game or if they are currently protected by the Handmaid. And if, by some twist of fate, all the other players still in the round happen to have Handmaid protection, well, then my ability becomes useless.
5: Prince Arnaud
Hey there! I’m Prince Arnaud, a bit of a social butterfly. Surprisingly, I wasn’t too upset when my mother got arrested. You see, I have no shortage of ladies vying for my attention. So, I figured I’d try my hand at being a matchmaker and help my sister find her own version of ordinary happiness.
Now, here’s the deal with my card. When you decide to discard me, you get to choose another player who’s still in the game. It can even be yourself! They have to throw away their hand and draw a new card. Pretty neat trick, huh?
If by some chance the deck has run out of cards, don’t worry! That chosen player gets to draw the card that was taken out at the beginning of the round.
But hold on a second! If all the other players are somehow protected by the Handmaid card, then you have no choice but to go with yourself. It’s better than nothing, right?
4: Susannah, the Clever Handmaid
Not many people would trust a handmaid with an important message. Even fewer people truly grasp the depth of Susannah’s intelligence or her uncanny talent for acting the fool when she needs to. It’s absolutely remarkable that she managed to go unnoticed after the queen’s arrest, a true testament to her sharp mind.
When you decide to let go of the Handmaid, you become invulnerable to any effects caused by other players’ cards until it’s your turn again. If every player, except for the one currently taking their turn, is protected by Susannah, that player must pick themselves if they can.
3: Baron Talus
I come from a family that has always stood by the royal family, and I carry that weight with me. People listen to me as if I were the king himself.
When I’m done with a round, I pick another player left in the game. We privately compare our hands, and the player with the lowest rank is out. If there’s a tie, then nothing changes. But if all the other players left are protected by the Handmaid, my card becomes useless.
Priest Tomas: The Compassionate Helper
Meet Father Tomas, a kind-hearted and optimistic priest who is always ready to make a positive impact. He can be found in the palace, offering solace, guidance, and companionship to those in need.
As the Priest, I have a unique ability to peek into someone’s hand when you choose to eliminate me from the game. This way, I can discreetly examine another player’s cards without revealing them to everyone else.

1: Meet Odette, the Devoted Guard
My duty as a steadfast guard is to ensure the safety of the esteemed royal family. I carry out my orders with unwavering determination and dedication, despite the rumors about my mentor’s unfortunate fate. They say he drowned while fleeing arrest for his alleged involvement in the queen’s treasonous activities.
Now, let me explain to you how the Guard works. When you decide to play this card, you must choose a player and guess a card name (excluding Guard). If your chosen player possesses that card, they are instantly eliminated from the round. However, if all the other players in the round are shielded by the protective Handmaid, then this card loses its effect.
