Welcome to the world of Catan! Today, I want to introduce you to a fun and exciting expansion called “The Helpers of Catan.” This expansion adds even more strategic options to the classic game, making it an even more enjoyable experience for players of all ages!

In this expansion, there are five different helper cards that players can use to gain an edge over their opponents. These helpers provide unique abilities that can help you in various aspects of the game, such as building roads, settlements, and cities, or even trading resources. Each helper card has its own special ability, so you’ll have to carefully consider which helper to use at any given moment to maximize your advantage.

To use a helper card, you simply play it during your turn. Once played, you will immediately gain the benefits of the card’s ability. Some helper cards can even be used multiple times, giving you even more opportunities to gain an advantage over your opponents.

It’s important to note that using a helper card requires resources. When you play a helper card, you must discard resources that match the requirements listed on the card. So make sure you have enough resources before playing a helper card, or else you won’t be able to use its ability!

Once you’ve used a helper card, it is discarded and cannot be used again. But don’t worry, there are ways to acquire new helper cards throughout the game. For example, you can trade with other players or use certain building abilities to gain new helper cards. So even if you’ve used all your helper cards, there’s still a chance to acquire new ones and continue utilizing their powerful abilities.

In conclusion, “The Helpers of Catan” expansion adds a whole new layer of strategy to the classic game. By using helper cards, you can gain special abilities that give you an edge over your opponents. But remember, using a helper card requires resources, so make sure you have enough before playing one. And don’t forget, there are ways to acquire new helper cards throughout the game, so even if you’ve used all your current cards, you can still obtain new ones. Good luck and have fun playing “The Helpers of Catan!”

The expansion pack called “The Helpers of Catan” brings new features and options to the popular game “The Settlers of Catan.” It can be played by 3-6 people and can also be combined with the “Seafarers” expansion.

Getting Started

Each card in this set represents a helper, with a front side labeled “A” and a back side labeled “B.” Some cards also have a number associated with them.

Start by creating a stack of the numbered cards, with the A-side facing up. The top card will be A1, and the rest will follow in numerical order, like A2, A3, and so on.

During the setup phase, when you build your second settlement, draw the top card from the stack and place it in front of you with the A-side facing up. This means the first player will receive card A1, the second player will get A2, and so on.

The remaining helper cards, including any leftover numbered cards, should be spread out beside the game board with the A-side facing up.

Using Helper Cards

Hey there! Let me tell you about the cool advantages of each helper card. They’re super helpful, and once you’ve used a card’s advantage, you have a couple of options:

  • You can return the card to the display and pick any other card from there. Just put it in front of you, ready to use on your next turn.
  • Or, you can turn the card over to its other side (the B-side) so you can use it again, but only once more. Of course, you can only do this on a later turn. After you’ve used the helper twice, just return it to the display and grab a new card.

Now, here’s something important to remember: you can’t use a helper card in the same turn you received it. Just a little rule to keep things fair.

Oh, and here’s a special rule for playing with 5-6 players: during the Special Building Phase, you can’t use a helper card at all. Not for construction or buying a development card. It’s a bit different when we have more players.

Let’s Talk About the Cards

The Merchant: Forced Trade

If you need a particular resource from up to two players, you can ask them for it. In exchange for each resource they give you, you must give them another resource of their choice.

The Beggar: Assisting with Road Building

When it’s my turn in the game, I have an interesting choice. I can either use the necessary brick or lumber to build a road, or I can pick a different resource. It’s like a little secret power! I can mix things up and use something unexpected.

Mayor: Keeping the Game Fair

So, here’s the thing: when I roll a die and it doesn’t give me any resources (except for when I roll a “7”), I still get a little something. Yep, you guessed it – I get to take any 1 resource card. Pretty nifty, right?

Explorer: Moving on up!

Did you know that during your turn, you have the power to move one of your terminal* roads to a different location, as long as you follow the rules? Pretty cool, right?

Important Tip: Keep Safe from the “7”

Let’s talk about an important rule in the game called “Catan.” It’s a strategy game that involves resource management and building settlements.

So here’s the deal: if you have more than 7 resources, you’re in luck. You don’t lose any resources! But if you have 7 or fewer resources, don’t fret. You still get to take any 1 resource before the robber is placed.

Now, let me introduce you to the Architect card. It’s a special card that allows you to select a development card. Development cards are powerful tools that can give you an edge in the game.

When it’s your turn in the game 1?, you have a special ability. Instead of paying the regular cost for a development card, you can swap out one of the resources it requires for any other resource. This can be really useful if you don’t have enough of a specific resource but have plenty of others. Remember, this ability can only be used when buying a development card, and you can choose from the first 3 cards in the stack. Don’t forget to shuffle the stack after you’ve made your choice!

Robber’s Den: Trouble in the Desert

Before you roll the dice on your turn, you have the power to send the robber to the desert. This sneaky move allows you to take 1 resource from the land where the robber was previously chilling.

Captain: Harbor of Freedom

When it’s your turn, you can choose one type of resource and exchange it for another at a 2:1 ratio. This means that for every two units of the chosen resource, you will receive one unit of the new resource. It’s a handy ability that allows you to adapt your strategy and make the most of the resources you have available.

The Power of the Priest

Guess what? I’ve got an incredible gaming tip for you! Let me explain how it works. You and I both know that in the game, you can place one of your knights on the discard pile each turn. But here’s where it gets interesting. After doing that, you have two great options to choose from. You can either build a city by spending 2 ore and 1 wheat, or you can build a settlement by using 1 lumber and 1 brick. How cool is that?

The Noblewoman: A Helping Hand for the Less Fortunate

When it’s my turn to play, I have a special move that can help me gain an advantage. After I roll the dice, I can choose to take one resource card from another player. But there’s a twist – I can only take a card from someone who has more victory points than me. This means that if I’m behind in the game, I have a chance to catch up by stealing a valuable resource from a leading player. It’s a risky move, but it could give me the boost I need to turn the tide in my favor.
