As soon as you bring the scholar on board, you get to use your third action card right away.

This means that when the scholar is in play, you keep your third action card hidden in your play area until phase 4, at which point you discard it.

So, you’re looking to hire a priest, huh? Well, let me break it down for you. When you decide to hire a priest, you take one influence marker from the general supply and plop it right onto the central Notre Dame sector. Easy peasy, right? That’s all there is to it. No fancy bells and whistles, just a simple placement of your influence marker. But hey, sometimes simplicity is the key to success, so don’t underestimate the power of a skilled priest! Who knows what kind of influence they might have in the grand scheme of things? Only time will tell.

When you hire the procurator, you get to perform an action from any one of the seven sectors based on the influence markers, including the trusted friend, that are present in that sector.

When you hire the bell-ringer, you’ll earn three prestige points for each of your influence markers on the central Notre Dame sector.

Let’s talk about the six cards for period B:

When you hire the spy, you can check out all the remaining gray person cards in the stack (without changing their order!), and you also earn 2 prestige points.

When you hire the gypsies, you have the option to return some or all of your influence markers from the board to the general supply. This gives you a chance to regain control over certain areas and make strategic moves. Each marker you return will earn you 2 prestige points, so it can be a valuable tactic to consider.

When you’re searching for a coachman, you have the option to use all the messages you’ve collected of one type. Let me give you an example to make it clearer.

Let’s say you’ve gathered 5 messages: 2 of “4 PP,” 2 of “2 PP + 1 marker,” and 1 of “1 PP + 1 coin.” Now, you can choose to take either 8 PP, or 4 PP and 2 markers, or 1 PP and 1 coin. It’s up to you! Remember, the choice is yours when it comes to hiring a coachman and using your collected messages.

When I hire a trader, I take 1 gold coin from the supply for each of my marketplaces that don’t have message tokens on them. It’s a way for me to get some extra coins to use in the game.

When you hire the benefactor, you have the option to give back some of the gold coins you have. For each coin you return, you can move your rat marker back one spot, as long as it doesn’t go below 0.

So, when I’m looking for a butcher to hire, I make sure to put one of my influence markers into each empty sector in my borough. This way, the actions associated with those sectors won’t be carried out.

Let’s talk about the six cards for period C

So, when you’re looking to hire an advisor in the game, something interesting happens. You actually have the option to hire not one, but two more people to join your team! And the best part? It only costs one coin for each additional person you hire!

Now, here’s where it gets really cool. You can choose to hire one other person twice if you want, or you can hire both of the other people just once. The choice is completely up to you! But here’s the catch – once you’ve hired the advisor, you can’t hire them again. It’s a one-time deal.

When you hire a guard, you get 3 prestige points for every 2 influence markers you have in the general supply.

For example: Let’s say you have 5 influence markers in the general supply. In that case, you would earn 6 prestige points.

So, you’re ready to hire a host for your hotel? Well, listen up, because I’ve got some important information for you. When you hire a host, you’ll get a sweet little bonus – 2 prestige points for each influence marker in your hotel, including your trusted friend!

When you hire the gravedigger, you’ll get prestige points from the supply. The number of points you receive will match the current plague value.

So, when you decide to bring in the actress, you get to do something pretty cool. You take all your influence markers, including your BFF, and move them from one sector to another in your borough. And guess what? You get to do the action that goes along with that sector. How awesome is that?

So, here’s how it goes when you hire the mistress. First, you grab an influence marker from the pile and put it in the area where your trusted friend is hanging out. Then, it’s action time!

Now, if your trusted friend isn’t already in the neighborhood, then the mistress doesn’t do anything. Bummer, right?
