Both the white sides and the yellow sides offer a balanced selection of resources, so you can’t go wrong with either. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even combine white and yellow sides in the same game to create economies with different amounts of resources. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing this in your first few games.

Let’s talk about Lusatia, shall we?

Lusatia is a fascinating land that spans the present-day borders of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. It has a rich history, with Germanic tribes and later Slavs, known as the Sorbs, making it their home. Even today, Lusatia proudly celebrates its Slavic heritage.

Lusatia can be divided into two parts: Upper Lusatia, which is located near the Czech border, and Lower Lusatia. From 1368 to 1635, both Lusatias were under the rule of the Czech (Bohemian) crown. After that, they became a fief granted to the Saxon Prince-Elector.

The League of Six

Imagine a group of six towns in Upper Lusatia, specifically Gorlitz, Bautzen, Lobau, Kamenz, Lauban, and Zittau. These towns joined forces in 1346 to protect themselves from sneaky knights who would try to steal from them.

Now, let me tell you why these towns had to be extra careful. Back in the 14th century, this region was a bustling trade route between Leipzig and Krakow. As you can guess, thieving was a big problem for the towns along this route. So, these clever towns came together and formed what we now know as the League of Six.

Throughout its existence, the League of Six held a lot of power in Lusatia. They were like the superheroes of the region, always there to protect the townsfolk from harm.

One significant event in the League’s history was the Hussite wars. While much of the region converted to Hussite teachings, the League of Six remained loyal to their Catholic beliefs. They stood their ground against the Hussites, even joining campaigns against them in Bohemia until 1429.

However, being the brave defenders they were, the League became a target for the Hussite military. These attackers laid siege to individual towns multiple times and, in some unfortunate cases, managed to capture them.

Once upon a time, the League of Six held a lot of power. But things changed when they lost their privileges and property. You see, they didn’t support Ferdinand I enough during the Schmalkaldic Wars in 1547. As a result, the League’s influence started to decline.

Fast forward to 1815, and the League disbanded. By that time, most of Lusatia had become part of Prussia. The League’s time had come to an end.

I’m here to tell you all about this amazing town in Upper Lusatia. It’s the western-most town in the League of Six, and it has a fascinating history.

Kamenz was founded a long time ago, way back in the 12th century. It was built on the site of a castle that was made to protect a trade route. Can you imagine what life was like back then?

But let’s fast forward a bit. Something really interesting happened in Kamenz in 1707. There was a huge fire that swept through the old town. It must have been terrifying, but it also left a lasting impact on the town’s look and feel. If you walk around Kamenz today, you can still see the influence of that fire.

Zittau

Zittau is a town in the southeast part of Upper Lusatia. The name comes from the Slavic word for rye. It has been mentioned as far back as 1238.

Originally, Zittau was part of the Czech kingdom until 1635. Back during the Thirty Years’ War, it played a significant role as a center for Czech Protestants. Unfortunately, they were forced to flee after the battle of Bily Hora.

It was during the Seven Years’ War that the town’s appearance drastically changed. Austrian units caused a devastating fire that destroyed all of the houses.

Welcome to Gorlitz, the eastern-most town in present-day Germany! Nestled in Upper Lusatia on the banks of the Neisse (Nysa) River, this enchanting place has a fascinating story to tell. Its strategic location on bustling trade routes made it an important hub for commerce and cultural exchange, dating all the way back to 1071.

Did you know that after World War II, Gorlitz found itself divided? The western part became part of East Germany, while the eastern part belonged to Poland. Remarkably, the town emerged from the ravages of war mainly unscathed, preserving its historical center with its stunning medieval, renaissance, and baroque architecture.

Lauban
