Investigators of Eldritch Horror

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Some people have a deep fascination with the unknown and the unexplained. They are drawn to mysteries and the supernatural, always seeking answers to questions that may never be fully answered. These individuals are investigators of the eldritch horror, diving deep into the realms of the strange and the eerie.

The eldritch horror is a term used to describe the cosmic terror and unknowable forces that exist beyond the realm of human understanding. It encompasses ancient entities, otherworldly dimensions, and unexplained phenomena that lie at the edge of our perception.

As an investigator of eldritch horror, I dive headfirst into the mysteries of this bizarre world. I travel to haunted places, read ancient tomes, and study the occult in my quest for knowledge. It’s a thrilling and terrifying pursuit, as the answers I seek often come at a great cost.

My investigations have led me to witness things that defy logic and challenge my understanding of reality. I have encountered creatures that should not exist, witnessed strange lights in the night sky, and experienced inexplicable phenomena firsthand. Each new discovery brings with it a mix of fascination and fear, but I am driven by an insatiable curiosity that compels me to push further into the unknown.

But this path is not without its dangers. The eldritch horror can corrupt the mind and soul, driving those who delve too deep into madness. Many have been consumed by their pursuit of knowledge, falling victim to ancient curses and malevolent entities.

Yet, I cannot resist the allure of the eldritch. The search for truth, no matter how terrifying, is what drives me forward. It is a quest that requires both courage and caution, as I navigate the treacherous waters of the unknown.

So, if you too have a thirst for the mysterious and a willingness to explore the uncharted territories of the mind and the universe, join me on this journey. Together, we will uncover the secrets of the eldritch horror and illuminate the darkest corners of our existence.

So, here’s the deal: Investigators can sometimes get Delayed by different things. Being Delayed means you can’t do any actions.

When you become Delayed, just tip your Investigator token on its side to show that you’re Delayed. Then, during the Action Phase, you take your token and stand it up again, and that means you’re not Delayed anymore.

When we begin playing the game, each of us has a set number of Health and Sanity tokens. These tokens represent our physical and mental well-being, respectively.

When I experience an effect that makes me lose Health or Sanity, I have to remove Health or Sanity tokens from my Investigator sheet. But if I want to regain Health or Sanity, I can take Health and Sanity tokens from the token pool. I have to remember that I can’t have more Health or Sanity than my maximum.

Investigators Who Are Defeated

If I ever reach zero Health or Sanity, that means I’m defeated. When that happens, I have to go through the following steps:

If you’re playing Advance Doom, just add 1 to the current Doom track.

For Relocation, move your Investigator token to the nearest City space. Turn your Investigator token sideways and place a Health token on it if you’ve lost all your Health, or place a Sanity token on it if you’ve lost all your Sanity.

Once you’ve done all that, keep on playing the current phase of the game as usual.

Now, when one of your Investigators is defeated, don’t worry! At the end of the Mythos Phase, you get to choose a new Investigator to control. Just pick any Investigator that hasn’t been used yet.

And here’s an interesting option for you: you can encounter a defeated Investigator’s token. By doing so, you can retrieve their possessions and maybe even reduce the Doom track. So keep an eye out for those defeated Investigators!

When I’m in the same space as a defeated investigator’s token during the encounter phase, I can choose to resolve one of the encounters on the back of their sheet. If the Investigator token has a Health token on it, I’ll resolve the “Crippled” encounter. If the Investigator token has a Sanity token on it, I’ll resolve the “Insane” encounter.

Once you’ve finished handling this encounter, you’ll need to remove the defeated Investigator token and Investigator sheet from the game. Unfortunately, that investigator won’t be available for the rest of the game.

When Investigators are Devoured

Some game effects may result in investigators being devoured. When an investigator is devoured, they are considered defeated, but only certain steps from the “Defeated Investigators” section on the left need to be followed.

After that, the devoured investigator must discard all Conditions, possessions, Health, Sanity, and Improvement tokens. The investigator’s sheet and token should also be removed from the game. During the Mythos Phase, the devoured investigator can choose a new investigator according to the instructions on the left.
