Ready, Set, Wasabi!
Welcome to the thrilling world of Wasabi! Get ready to dive into the fast-paced world of this exciting game. The rules are simple, but the strategy is complex. With every move you make, you’ll be challenged and engaged. So, let’s jump right in!
Game Setup
Before we begin, let’s go over the game setup. To play Wasabi, you’ll need a game board, 4 sushi chef tokens, 72 wooden Ingredient cubes, and 64 Recipe cards. Each player will start with two random Recipe cards, and Ingredients will be placed in a pool nearby. Make sure the game board is set up in the center of the playing area, where everyone can reach it. And don’t forget about Wasabi cubes – they play an important role! Let’s get started!
Playing the Game
The objective of Wasabi is to create the most flavorful sushi recipes and earn the highest score. You’ll do this by strategically placing Ingredient cubes onto your Recipe cards and completing the required combinations. Each Recipe card will have a unique combination for you to fulfill.
On your turn, you’ll have two actions to choose from. You can either 1) put an Ingredient cube onto one of your Recipe cards, or 2) cook a Recipe by placing the required Ingredients from your Recipe card onto the central game board. Remember, cooking a Recipe will earn you points!
But be careful! Wasabi cubes can elevate the taste of your sushi, but they’re also a double-edged sword. While they boost your score, they can also regenerate your opponent’s response. So, use them wisely and strategically!
The game will continue with each player taking turns, placing Ingredient cubes and cooking Recipes. As the game progresses, you’ll earn points and strategize to create the most delicious combinations. Keep an eye on your opponents and be ready to adapt your strategy as the game unfolds.
Scoring and Winning
At the end of the game, it’s time to tally up the scores. You’ll earn points based on the completed Recipes and any remaining Wasabi cubes on your cards. The more Recipes you cook and complete, the higher your score will be. But remember, it’s all about quality, not quantity!
The player with the highest score is declared the winner and earns the title of Master Sushi Chef. Congratulations!
Final Thoughts
Are you ready to take on the challenge of Wasabi? This game is perfect for anyone who loves strategy, competition, and, of course, sushi! With its simple rules and engaging gameplay, it’s a game that will keep you coming back for more. So gather your friends, set up the game board, and let the sushi-making begin. Enjoy!
So, here’s the deal: I’ve been studying sushi for ten long years under the guidance of a legendary sushi master. And now, it’s time for my final test to become an expert chef called Itamae-San. One last hurdle, and I’ll prove myself.
Let me tell you, sushi is no joke. It’s a culinary art form that demands absolute mastery. Every dish needs to be a masterpiece, filled with vibrant colors, flavors that make your mouth water, and combinations that will blow your mind. It’s all about pushing the boundaries and creating something truly extraordinary.
But there’s one catch – the test. It’s not going to be a walk in the park. I’ll be competing against a bunch of other talented hopefuls, all vying for the same title. And guess what? We’ll be crammed into a tiny space, elbow to elbow, trying to whip up recipes of different complexity levels.
Now, here’s the thing. Only one of us will make it. Only one of us will earn the respect and recognition of our teacher, and the coveted title of Itamae-San. The stakes are high, my friend.

Game Components
When you open the box, you’ll find several components:
- 1 Board
- 72 Ingredient Tiles such as Salmon, Avocado, Maki, etc.
- 40 Challenge Tokens
- 52 Recipe Strips
- 10 Action Cards
- Wasabi Cubes
- 4 Bowls
- 4 Screens
The Playing Surface
The playing surface is a large grid called the board. It’s where all the action happens. The board has different zones depending on how many players are in the game. Let me break it down for you:
- If there are 2 players, you only use the lightest 5 columns of the board.
- If there are 3 players, you add the next darker column.
- If there are 4 players, you use all 7 columns.
See those green dots on the board? They’re there to help you remember which area to use. They’ll guide you in setting up the game correctly.
Getting to Know the Challenge Tokens
I wanted to share with you some information about the Challenge Tokens. You may be wondering, “What are Challenge Tokens?” Well, let me explain it to you.
Challenge Tokens are like small cards that come in different shapes and sizes. On one side of each Token, you’ll find a Recipe length, a point value, and the number of Wasabi Cubes you earn when you complete the sushi with style. On the other side, you’ll see only the point value.
These Tokens are pretty neat because they have a dual purpose. Not only do they give you points, but they also earn you Wasabi Cubes. You can use these cubes to enhance your gameplay and make the experience even more exciting!
Now, you might be wondering how you earn points and Wasabi Cubes. Well, it’s simple! When you complete a sushi order using the recipe on a Token, you earn the points indicated on its point side. But if you complete the order with style, you also earn Wasabi Cubes based on the Recipe length and the number shown on the Token’s length side.
So, the more Tokens you collect and use to complete orders, the more points and Wasabi Cubes you’ll earn. And with these cubes, you can elevate your gameplay to a whole new level! Isn’t that exciting?
I hope this explanation helped you understand the Challenge Tokens better. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Now, let’s get back to the game and have some sushi fun!
Let’s Play Wasabi!
When you play Wasabi!, your goal is to create delicious sushi recipes and earn points by placing ingredients on the game board. Can you meet your challenges and do it all with style? If you succeed, you’ll even get to choose helpful Action Cards.
The game goes like this: as you fill up the board with ingredients, you earn points. The player with the most points wins the game. However, there’s a twist! If you’re an incredibly talented chef, you can win instantly by completing ten challenges before the board gets filled up. It’s all about finding the right balance between speed and technique if you want to be the ultimate champion!
Getting Started
Here’s how you set up the game:
1. Put the Board in the center of the table.
2. Sort the Ingredients by type and stack them in the appropriate area of the Pantry. The Pantry has different sections for the six categories of Ingredients, each identified by a different color.
To start playing the game, you’ll need to follow these steps:
1. Shuffle the Recipe strips and place them face-down in separate stacks near the board.
2. Put the Action Cards in the Kitchen, with their arrangement not being important.
- For a 2-player game, use 1 of each Action Card type (5 cards total).
- For a 3-player game, use these 7 Action Cards: 2 Wasabi!, 2 Spicy!, 1 Chop!, 1 Switch!, and 1 Stack!
- For a 4-player game, use all 10 Action Cards.
3. Gather all the Wasabi Cubes near the board.
4. Give each player a Screen, a Bowl, and all 10 Challenge Tokens of one color. Any remaining Tokens, Bowls, or Screens are not used.
5. Set up your Challenge Tokens on the table in front of you, with the length-side up so everyone can easily see them. Stand up your Screen to conceal items behind it.
Let’s Get Started!
To start the game, we need to choose a starting player. If that’s me, here’s what I’ll do:
- First, I’ll follow the rules for starting hands (you can see the explanation on the side). I’ll take three Ingredient tiles from the Pantry and pass them to the player on my left. These tiles will be their starting hand. Each player can hide their hand behind their Screen. We’ll keep going clockwise, with each player doing the same until everyone has their starting hand.
- Next, I’ll take three Recipes, as many as I like, and slide them into the slots in my Screen. Before drawing the next Recipe, I can take a look at each one. We’ll continue clockwise, with each player doing the same until everyone has their three Recipes.
Once everyone is ready, we can start the game!
Let the Game Begin!
Alright, let’s get into the game! It’s all about taking turns, going clockwise from the first player. When it’s your turn, there are two simple steps you need to follow:
Step 1: You have to play an Ingredient tile, and you can also play an Action Card if you want.
If you don’t want to play anything, no worries! You can choose to Pass instead. Just skip Step 1 and get rid of some or all of the Recipes on your Screen. The discarded Recipes go to the bottom of their original stack. Once you’re done with that, move on to Step 2.
Step 2: This step is all about getting ready for your next turn.
Step 1: Playing your ingredient tile and action card
Here comes the fun part! You have to place exactly one Ingredient tile from your hand onto any empty square on the board.
(Remember, you have to stay within the play area determined by the number of players).
Hey there! Let me explain how this game works. During the first step of your turn, you have the option to play an Action Card. You can only play one per turn, and it might go before or after you lay down your Ingredient tile. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you more about the Action Cards later.
Now, if you manage to create a straight line of Ingredient tiles either vertically or horizontally on the game board, and it matches one of your Recipes without any interruptions, congratulations! You’ve completed a Recipe. Just remember, the sequence can include tiles that other players have placed, as long as you’re the one who adds the final tile to complete it. And don’t worry about the tiles surrounding the sequence – they don’t matter.
Completing a Recipe comes with a condition, though. You can only do it if you have an unassigned Challenge Token of the same length as the Recipe. Keep that in mind as you strategize your moves.
When it comes to completing Recipes in the game, the order of Ingredients doesn’t necessarily have to match the order shown on the Recipe strip. But if you manage to match the exact order, you’ll earn bonus points for longer Recipes!
Usually, Recipes are completed by placing Ingredients onto the board. However, there are some Action Cards that can also help you complete Recipes. (Check the Action Cards section for more details). With strategic tile placement and clever use of Action Cards, it’s even possible to complete multiple Recipes in a single turn.
Completing a Recipe
When you finish making a Recipe, take it off your Screen and place it face-up in front of you for everyone to see. Take a Challenge Token that matches the Recipe’s length and put it on top of the Recipe strip with the point-side up. If you made the Recipe in a stylish way, you get the specified number of Wasabi Cubes and add them to your Bowl.
Remember: You can only complete a Recipe if you have an unassigned Challenge Token of the correct length.
Once you complete a Recipe and assign a Challenge Token to it, it becomes yours forever, even if the board’s layout changes.
Congratulations, you have finished making the Pickle Barrel Recipe! Now, take a moment to remove the strip from your screen and place it right in front of you.
Since this Recipe has three parts, you’ll need to assign one of your unassigned Challenge Tokens with a length of three. To do this, simply place the Token on the Recipe strip with the point-side facing up. The points earned from these assigned Challenge Tokens will contribute to your final score at the end of the game.
If you managed to complete the Pickle Barrel exactly as shown on the strip, you would be rewarded with the number of bonus Wasabi Cubes indicated on the side of the Challenge Token. In this case, since the Token is three lengths long, you would receive one cube as a bonus.
Here’s what’s happening: You’re looking at the Crunchy Tuna Recipe on your screen, and you have an unassigned Challenge Token that has a length of 3. You also have a Tempura Ingredient in your hand.
Now, you want to complete the Recipe by placing the Tempura on the empty square between the Maki and Tuna that are already on the board. This will create a straight-line sequence that matches the Crunchy Tuna Recipe. Even though the ingredients are not in the exact same order as on the strip, you have successfully completed a Recipe!
Here’s another example: You have both the Pickle Barrel and Tekkamaki Recipes, along with an unassigned Challenge Token that has a length of 2 and another one with a length of 3. Additionally, you have a Maki Ingredient in your hand.
You decide to place the Maki on the square that is indicated. And guess what? This move allows you to complete both the Pickle Barrel and Tekkamaki Recipes! But wait, there’s more. Since the 3-part Pickle Barrel sequence matches the strip exactly, you’ve earned yourself a special Wasabi Cube for completing that Recipe with style!
Step 2: Getting Ready for Your Next Move
Now, let’s get you prepared for your next turn. Here’s what you need to do:
- Action Cards: First off, you’ll get to collect an Action Card as a reward for every Recipe you completed on your last turn. You can choose these cards from the Kitchen or pick up any Wasabi! Cards that are on the board. Just remember, you can’t pick an Action Card of the same type you played last turn, unless you have no other option. And don’t worry, you’ll never have more than 2 Action Cards in your hand. If your hand gets a bit full, you can always discard Action Cards into the Kitchen to make room for new ones. If you want to keep your cards a secret, you can hide them behind your Screen.
- Ingredient Tiles: Next, let’s check your ingredients. If you have less than 3 ingredients in your hand, don’t worry! You can draw fresh ingredients from the Pantry. Take whichever ingredients you want until you have a total of 3 in your hand.
Hey there! Let’s talk about recipes and playing a fun game. I want to share some important info about how you can play and win.
First, let me explain about recipes. If you don’t have at least 3 recipes in front of you, don’t worry. You can draw new recipes from a deck and add them to your collection. You can even choose how long each new recipe is before drawing the next one.
Now, once you’ve done that, it’s the next player’s turn.
The game keeps going until one of two things happen. Either someone gets an instant win or we reach the end.
An instant win can happen when a player assigns all 10 of their Challenge Tokens to recipes they have completed. If that happens, they are the winner, no matter how many points everyone else has.
If the instant win doesn’t happen, we keep playing until the end. At the end, the player with the most points wins.
I hope you’re ready to have some fun playing this game. Good luck, and let’s get cooking!
If, after a player takes their turn, every square on the board is filled with either an Ingredient or a part of a Wasabi! Card, the game stops right away. To determine the winner, everyone adds up their points, which include Challenge Token points and 1 point for each Wasabi Cube they have. The player with the most points is declared the winner!
If there’s a tie for the most points, the winner is the person with the most Wasabi Cubes. If there’s still a tie, then the game ends in a draw.
Here’s an example of how the game can end:
GAME END B
It’s your turn! You take a look at the board and see that all the squares are filled with Ingredients or Wasabi! Card parts. That means the game is over. Time to count up your points! You have 3 Challenge Tokens and 2 Wasabi Cubes, so that’s a total of 5 points. Let’s see how everyone else did.
Player 2 has 2 Challenge Tokens and 1 Wasabi Cube, for a total of 3 points.
Player 3 has 1 Challenge Token and no Wasabi Cubes, so they only have 1 point.
Player 4 has 2 Challenge Tokens and 3 Wasabi Cubes, giving them 5 points, just like you.
It’s a tie between you and Player 4! But wait, who has more Wasabi Cubes? Player 4 has 3, so they are the winner!
Congratulations to Player 4 for having the most points and the most Wasabi Cubes! They are the champion of this game.
Remember, in this game, the more points and Wasabi Cubes you have, the better your chances of winning. So be strategic and aim for those high-scoring moves. Good luck and happy gaming!
Hey, there’s only one empty square left on the board. All the other squares are either filled with Ingredients or covered by a Wasabi! Card piece. Guess what? It’s your turn, and you get to play an Egg tile into that final square. Boom! The board is now complete. But hold on a sec, don’t forget to do Step 2 before you finish your turn. And guess what happens then? The game ends right away. Exciting stuff, right? Now, here’s the cool part. When the game ends, all players tally up their points. It’s time to see who wins!
So, let’s say you’ve completed all five recipes shown on the table. These recipes are worth 8 points, plus 3 points, plus 5 points, plus 2 points, and finally 2 points. Looking good, right? But wait, there’s more! You also have 3 Wasabi Cubes in your Bowl. That’s some serious flavor. When you do the math, your final score turns out to be an impressive 23 points. You’ve cooked up quite the game!
Psst! Here’s a little secret: If you had completed a Recipe by placing the Egg tile, and if you had decided to grab the Wasabi! Card as your reward during Step 2, then guess what? The board wouldn’t have been full at the end of your turn. That means the game wouldn’t have ended just yet. Sneaky, huh?
