Game Setup

Before we dive into the details of gameplay, let’s set up the game board. Start by placing the board in the center of the table, ensuring that all players have easy access to it. Each player should select a Villain to play as and take their corresponding Villain board, deck of Fate cards, and Villain guide. Shuffle the Fate decks and place them facedown, forming a draw pile for each Villain.

Now it’s time to choose a Fate deck to play with. Take the Fate decks of all the Villains playing, shuffle them together, and then place them facedown as a common Fate deck. Finally, gather all the decks of Item cards and place them nearby as a common Item deck.

Your Villain Board

Your Villain board is your central hub during the game. It displays your unique Villain’s realm, which is essential for accomplishing your objective. Take the time to study your Villain board closely, familiarizing yourself with the locations where you’ll need to place your Allies, Items, and Vanquish cards.

Beginning the Game

At the start of the game, each player draws four cards from their Villain deck. These cards represent the resources you’ll use to carry out your dastardly plans. Additionally, choose a Fate token and place it on the starting space of the Fate track on your Villain board.

Gameplay

Now that the setup is complete, let’s take a look at how the game unfolds. Villainous follows a turn-based structure, with each player taking a turn before play passes to the next Villain. On your turn, you’ll take several actions to further your sinister agenda.

1. Move Your Villain

First, you’ll move your Villain token around the board. Each location on the board has a specific action associated with it. To perform the action of a location, you must have at least one Ally or Item card placed there. Move your Villain token to the desired location, and if you meet the requirements, carry out the associated action.

2. Perform Actions

3. Draw Cards

In the world of Villainous, there are special cards known as Items that play a crucial role in the game. These cards can be found in both the Villain deck and the Fate deck, and they possess unique abilities that can impact other cards or actions.

To bring an Item into play from the Villain deck, you’ll need to pay its Cost, which is displayed in the upper left corner of the card. Once you’ve paid the cost, you can place the Item beneath any unlocked location in your Realm (unless the card instructs you to attach it to an Ally).

If an Item card instructs you to attach it to an Ally, you must place the Item beneath one of your Allies in the Realm. However, if there are no Allies available to attach the Item to, you won’t be able to play it.

It’s important to note that if an Ally card with an attached Item is moved or discarded, all of the attached Items will also be affected and moved or discarded along with them.

On the other hand, all Items from the Fate deck are automatically attached to a Hero card. To play an Item from the Fate deck, simply place the card beneath one of your Heroes. However, if there are no available Heroes to attach the Item to, you won’t be able to play that particular Item.

When a Hero is moved or discarded, any Items attached to them are also moved or discarded.

Effect Cards

Effect cards can be found in both the Villain deck and the Fate deck, and they are single-use events. To use an Effect card, you need to pay its Cost (if there is one indicated in the upper left corner), follow the instructions on the card, and then discard it face up into the correct discard pile.

Example: Want to use this card? Just pay 1 Power and play it! Then, discard it face up.

What Are Condition Cards?

Condition cards are a unique type of card that you can use during your opponent’s turn. They have a special function and are not played using the normal “Play a Card” action.

When you have a Condition card in your hand and the specific requirement on the card is met during your opponent’s turn, you have the opportunity to immediately play the card. Once played, you follow the instructions on the card and then discard it by placing it face up in your discard pile.

It’s important to note that after playing a Condition card, your opponent’s turn continues without interruption. You do not draw a new card at that moment. Instead, you must wait until the end of your turn to draw cards back up to a total of four.

What Are Activated Abilities?

These abilities are not always active, so you have to activate them to use them. You can tell if a card has an Activated Ability because it has a special symbol on it.

In addition to their Strength, most Allies also have special Abilities that affect other cards or actions. When you have an Ally in your Realm, you will need to decide whether to use it to defeat a Hero or keep it in your Realm for its special Ability.

Playing the Game

Here’s what you need to do, step by step:

1. Move your Villain

Take your Villain Mover and go to a different place. You have the freedom to choose any location in your Realm, as long as it is not locked. However, you cannot stay at your previous location.

Hey there! Guess what? This cool thing called the Lock Token lets you know if a location is locked. If it is, you can’t go there. Bummer, right?

2. Do Stuff

Now, every location has symbols that show what you can do when you go there. And the best part is, you can do all the actions in any order you want. How awesome is that? You can do each action once for every symbol you see. But hey, remember, all the actions are optional. You do you!

When we play the game, certain actions can be covered by Fate cards. If an action is covered, we can’t do it until the card is moved or discarded.

But when an action is uncovered, we can do it right away if our Villain is in that location and it’s still our turn.

Step 3: Draw Cards

At the end of our turn, if we have less than four cards in our hand, we can draw from our Villain deck until we have four cards.

If our deck is empty and we need to draw a card, we shuffle our discard pile to make a new deck.

Power the Cauldron symbol has is connected to the number on it. This means you can obtain Power equal to the number shown.

Power is like the money in this game. It’s what you need to play cards and activate Abilities.

Play a Card

When you play a card, you’re taking it from your hand and putting it into play. But remember, you can only play one card when you take this action.

Most cards have a Cost. You can find the Cost in the upper left corner. When you play a card, you’ll have to pay its Cost by returning that amount of Power to the Cauldron. If you don’t have enough Power to pay for a card’s Cost, then you can’t play that card.

In Villainous, I have the freedom to play an Item or Ally card to any unlocked location in my Realm. I simply need to place the card at the bottom of my Board, below the desired location.

Time to Activate

Now comes the fun part! I get to choose one Item or Ally card in my Realm that has an Activate symbol. To activate it, I need to pay the card’s Activation Cost, if there is one, and then I can unleash its special ability. It’s like bringing a new power to life!

Fate

So, here’s what you do: pick someone you want to target and reveal two cards from the top of their Fate deck. Look at those cards and pick one to play against your opponent. The other one goes face up in their Fate discard pile. It’s up to you how you want to use the Ability of the Fate card against them. With a Fate action, you can really mess with their progress.

If you have a Hero card, you can play it to any location in your opponent’s Realm, as long as it’s not locked. Just put the Hero card on top of the location card.

Move an Item or Ally

Now, let’s talk about moving things around. You can move one Item or Ally card from any location in your Realm to a nearby location. Just make sure it’s adjacent.

You cannot move an Item or Ally into or out of a locked location. Also, you cannot move an Item that is attached to an Ally or a Hero.

Let’s take a look at moving a Hero. You can move a Hero from any location in your Realm to an adjacent location. However, you are not allowed to move a Hero into or out of a locked location.

Next, let’s talk about Vanquishing. To vanquish a Hero, you need to defeat them at any location in your Realm. You can do this by using one or more Allies that are already at the same location as the Hero.

Each Ally and Hero has a Strength value, which you can find in the lower left corner of their card. This strength value can be changed by other cards in your Realm. To defeat a Hero, your Ally must have a Strength equal to or higher than the Hero’s Strength. If you have multiple Allies, you can add their Strengths together to meet or exceed the Hero’s Strength.

If you want to defeat the hero, just get rid of the ally or allies that are helping them. You can do this by moving the ally or allies to your villain discard pile. Once the hero is defenseless, you can discard them to your fate discard pile, meaning they won’t be able to come back and bother you again.

Discard Your Cards

You can get rid of as many cards as you want from your hand. Just place them face up on your Villain discard pile. By discarding unwanted cards, you’ll have more choices on your next turn.

Remember, when you discard, you don’t immediately draw new cards. You have to wait until the end of your turn to draw back up to four cards.

Game Over

Once a player completes their Villain’s Objective, the game ends and that player wins!
