So, are you ready to embark on this epic Viking adventure? Get ready to test your skills, unravel ancient mysteries, and carve your name into the annals of history. The Vikings await!
Hey there! Let me tell you about an exciting game called Viking Explorers. In this game, you and the other players get to lead small groups of vikings on daring expeditions to explore the islands near your homeland. It’s like being an adventurer and a strategist at the same time!
Once you discover these islands, you can establish settlements on them. Craftsmen and nobles will make their homes there, creating a thriving community on each island. It’s really cool to see these places come to life!
Of course, there are always obstacles to overcome. You need to protect your newly discovered islands from attacks. One way to do this is by stationing viking warriors between your islands and any approaching enemy ships. This not only keeps your people safe but also adds to your fame and wealth. It’s like being a hero and a leader all at once!
The game is played over 6 rounds, and the player who achieves the most success at leading their vikings and building their settlements wins. Can you be that victorious leader? There’s only one way to find out – play Viking Explorers and embark on an epic adventure!
What’s in the Box?

- Wow, that’s a lot of vikings – 78 to be exact!
- Also, there are 62 island tiles.
- Plus, there’s 14 ship tiles.
- And lastly, we have 25 special tiles.
- Make sure you read the rulebook!
- Oh, and there are Progress Rules too.
Setup
Okay, let’s get started! Each of us takes our stuff and puts it in our play area – right in front of us on the table. Easy, right?
The first thing I need to do is set up the game. Here’s what you’ll need:
- I’m going to use the player base as my starting point.
- Each player will place their player marker on space 10 of the scoring track and on their own homeland to show their color.
- I’ll need a start tile, and I’ll remove any unused start tiles if there are fewer than 4 players. I’ll add my start tile to my base on my first turn.
- If I’m playing with 2 players, I’ll start with 30 gold in coins. If I’ve got 3 players, I’ll have 25 gold in coins, and with 4 players, I’ll start with 20 gold in coins.
- Lastly, I’ll need a scoring summary.
Now that I’ve got everything set up, let’s start playing.
- I’ll place the game board with the attached wheel in the middle of the table. The board has spaces for the tiles, special tiles, the wheel, and vikings. There’s also a scoring track to keep track of our victory points.
- We’re ready to go! Let’s start exploring and building our civilizations.
I shuffled the remaining 72 tiles and placed them face down in 6 stacks of 12 tiles each on the board. The extra coins were placed next to the board as a bank. Then I mixed all 78 vikings in the cloth sack really well. Next, we all picked a start player and he took the start player figure, placing it in his play area next to his homeland. The board has supply spaces for the 6 stacks of tiles with symbols for scorings.
Now, let me give you an overview of how the game is played. It takes place over 6 rounds, and in each round, we use one of the 6 tile stacks from left to right, starting from the supply spaces.
When I start a new round, I lay out a set of 12 tiles with 12 vikings on the table (as shown in the image on the right). Then, I am the first player, so I take the next stack of tiles from the board and put them face up on the 12 spaces next to the wheel.
When I play the game, I arrange the tiles around the wheel like this:
- I put the first island tile on the space with a value of 0. Then, I place additional island tiles on spaces that cost more and more (like 1, then 2, then 3, and so on).
- As for the ship tiles, I put the first one on the space with a value of 11. Afterwards, I place the rest of the ship tiles on spaces that cost less and less (like 10, then 9, then 8, and so on).
For example: Once the bag is opened, no one knows which scout will be drawn out.
Next, I draw 12 Vikings randomly from the bag and organize them by color. The Vikings are then placed around the wheel, one Viking per spot.
I place them in a clockwise order, starting from zero and moving to 11. First, I place all the blue fishermen, followed by the yellow goldsmiths, then the green scouts, the red nobles, the black warriors, and finally the gray boatsmen. If there are no Vikings of a particular color, I skip that spot.
When we play the game, we follow a specific order. It’s like taking a journey around a circle, starting at a certain point and moving in a clockwise direction. Each player takes their turn by choosing a set of tiles and Vikings, which consists of one tile and its corresponding Viking. They do this one at a time, not all at once.
After a player chooses a set, they immediately add both the Viking and the tile to their homeland. It’s like they’re bringing a piece of their journey back home with them.
Once all 12 tiles and Vikings have been taken, the round comes to an end. But before we move on to the next round, there’s something important we need to do – scoring.
Scoring happens at different points in the game, depending on which round we’re in. Let’s break it down:
- After the 1st, 3rd, and 5th rounds, we have a small scoring of goldsmiths. It’s like we’re rewarding the players for their progress.
- After the 2nd, 4th, and 6th rounds, we have a large scoring. This time, everyone gets a chance to score, except for the blue player.
- After the 6th round, we have a final scoring. But this one is special because there are bonuses involved. It’s like a grand finale!
For Example, at the start of the game: Before I can grab the set with the fisherman next to 0, I need to grab the two fisherman sets at 1 and 2 (the order doesn’t matter).
Getting a Set (Tile And Viking)
When it’s my turn (starting with me and then going around the table clockwise), I have to pay for and get 1 set (tile and Viking). I pay the cost (in gold coins) next to the set on the wheel (0 – 11).
I put the tile and Viking in my homeland right away. Everyone keeps doing this until all 12 sets have been grabbed (for example, if there are 4 players, each player grabs exactly 3 sets).
- A player can only get the set when the Viking with the same color is the only one left on the wheel.
- Once the player has acquired a set, if there’s no set at 0, the wheel moves clockwise until the first remaining set is reached.
- The player’s homeland is where they can place tiles and Vikings. All acquired tiles must be placed next to the base or existing tiles.
When I want to play the game of Vikings, I have to keep in mind that all the Vikings I collect need to be placed on my base or onto the tiles that I acquire. My base has different rows for different types of Vikings, including ships, warriors, nobles, scouts, goldsmiths, and fishermen. I can place as many tiles as I want in each row, depending on how many Vikings I collect.
Putting Down a Tile
When it’s my turn, I get to choose and place one set of tiles on my play area, making sure that it’s either on or connected to my homeland.
Alright, here’s the deal. Whenever I get my hands on a ship tile, I’ve got to stick it right up in that first row. No exceptions.
Now, moving on to something important. We’ve got ourselves some keywords to keep in mind. Pay close attention to these bad boys.
First up, we’ve got the term “ship tile.” This little fella plays a big role in the game. When you stumble upon one, it’s your duty to add it to that very first row. Simple as that.
Next on our keyword list is the phrase “acquires a ship tile.” This means getting your mitts on one of those precious little tiles and making sure it finds its place in the prime real estate – the first row.
Alright, let’s move on to the next term – “place it in the first row.” Yeah, you heard me right. You’ve gotta take that shiny ship tile and put it in the top row. No other option here.
See, it’s not rocket science. But it’s important to remember these rules if you want to master this game.
- First, I can put my very first ship in any of the first 3 columns on the ship row. But, any future ships I get must always be placed next to a ship that I already have. I’m not allowed to put ships in columns 4+ until I’ve filled up columns 1-3 with ships.
- If I manage to get an island tile, I have to put it in one of the other five rows in my homeland. But, there are some rules that I have to follow:
- When I put down an island tile, I have to make sure that at least one side of it is touching either another tile or the base. Just touching it diagonally doesn’t count!
- Each island tile has a specific way it’s supposed to face. I can’t put a tile upside-down, like if the left side is supposed to be on the right side.
So you’re playing a game called “Island Tile” and you want to know the rules? Well, I’ve got you covered! Let me break it down for you.
First off, let’s talk about how to place those island tiles. When you’re putting down a new tile, it’s important to remember a couple of things. If you’re placing it to the right or left of another island tile, the new tile has to match either sea to sea or land to land. It’s all about keeping things connected, you know?
Now, what happens if you can’t legally place a tile anywhere? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. If that’s the case, just discard the tile from play. But before you do that, make sure to place the Viking on your base next to the boatsman graphic. That way, everyone knows you’re out of luck for now.
So there you have it! The rules for the “Island Tile” game. Remember, it’s all about connecting those tiles and making sure everything matches up. Have fun!
Hey there! Did you know that when you start playing a game and you place your first ship or island tile on your homeland, you also need to place your start tile at the same time? It’s true! The order in which you play the two tiles doesn’t matter, so you can choose which one to place first.
Let me show you how to place tiles: In this case, you can put ship tiles on the dotted spaces and island tiles on the striped spaces.
Placing a Viking
When I’m playing the game, I can place an island tile in a row that matches the color of the Viking that I took as part of the set. For example, if I have a yellow goldsmith Viking and I place a yellow tile in the goldsmith row, I can immediately put the Viking on that tile. But I can’t put the Viking on a different tile in the same row or any other row! Once I place a Viking on an island tile, it stays there for the whole game. If I don’t want to put the Viking on that tile, I can put it on my base next to the boatsman graphic.
Scoring
When there are no more tile/Viking sets around the wheel, it’s time for scoring. I earn points or gold for the Vikings on the islands, even if the island isn’t complete yet.
When you play the game of Vikings, scoring happens based on the right-most visible scoring symbol. Look at the image above to see how it works.
Let’s talk about small scoring.
In this game, there are different ways to score points. Let’s start with the small scoring.
You have three rounds in the game, and at the end of rounds 1, 3, and 5, there is an opportunity to earn some points. For each goldsmith you have on an island tile (not your base), you’ll get 3 gold coins.
But be aware, there’s a catch! If a goldsmith is threatened by a ship, you won’t earn any coins for that goldsmith.
Now, let’s move on to the large scoring.
So, here’s the deal: there are these rounds in the game, and the big scoring moments happen at the end of rounds 2, 4, and 6. It’s pretty straightforward – the players take turns, going in order, starting with the first player. And what do they do? Well, they carry out actions and rack up points, of course.
But how do they keep track of those points? Easy! Each player moves their scoring marker on the scoring track right away to show the points they just earned. And here’s the thing – the players score the Vikings in their play areas from top to bottom, one at a time.
Now, let’s talk about the Boatsman:
Hey there! Let me tell you something cool about this game. When you start scoring big points, you get to move Vikings from the base to the islands. It’s pretty exciting! Now, when it comes to moving the Vikings, you have a special character called a boatsman. This boatsman can move either all Vikings of the same color or one Viking of each available color from the base to empty island tiles. Cool, right? But wait, there are some rules. You have to follow all the rules for placing the Vikings on the islands. The boatsman can only be used to move Vikings from the base to the islands and not to move Vikings among the islands. Once you use a boatsman, you have to discard it from the game. So, make sure you use them wisely! Here’s a special twist: during the third big scoring, after the 6th round, you have to use all the boatsmen that you have left to move any remaining Vikings from the base to the islands. It’s a thrilling challenge! Have fun playing!
Take a look at this example: There’s a group of Vikings on a boat, and they want to move to different islands. Each boatsman has the ability to transport certain combinations of Vikings. Here are the options:
– 3 fishermen
– 1 goldsmith
– 2 scouts
– 1 fisherman, 1 goldsmith, and 1 scout of different colors
Now, let’s turn our attention to the boats themselves.
Ahoy! Picture this: a ship looming above a group of brave Vikings, who are standing on their islands, feeling the full force of the ship’s menacing presence. But here’s the thing – this ship doesn’t just create a foreboding atmosphere, it actually affects the game! You see, any row of Vikings that matches the color of the ship’s sail is in big trouble. They won’t be able to earn any coins or points while the ship threatens them.
Now, to really drive home the impact of the ship, you’ll want to physically show it. During scoring, just tilt those poor, affected Vikings to the side, as a visual reminder of the power the ship holds over them. It’s a small gesture, but it adds an extra dimension to the game.
Let’s not forget about the fearsome Warrior. This hulking figure can cause quite a commotion! Keep an eye out for this particular Viking, as their presence can make a difference in your strategy.
So, there you have it. The ship and the Warrior – two elements that can turn the tides of the game. Remember, it’s not just about scoring points, it’s about navigating these challenges and emerging victorious. Best of luck, my fellow Viking adventurers!
Hey there! Let me explain a super cool concept called Viking Warrior on an Island. It’s like a fun puzzle game with warriors and ships, and I think you’ll find it really interesting.
Here’s how it works:
Imagine a warrior standing on an island tile, right below a ship. Something awesome happens – the warrior repels the ship’s threat! This means that any Vikings below the warrior are safe from the ship. And you know what’s even better? You get to collect the coins or points that are on the ship tile. How cool is that?
When I’m on an island tile, each noble standing there gives me 2 victory points. It’s a great way to earn points, but there’s a catch. If any of the nobles are threatened by a ship, I won’t earn any points for them. So I need to be careful and make sure my nobles are safe from those ships.
Scout:
When I have a scout standing on an island tile, I get 1 victory point. And if I have a goldsmith and a fisherman on the island tiles directly below the scout, I get an additional 1 victory point for each. But here’s the thing: if a ship threatens my scout, I don’t get any points for that scout, or for the goldsmith and fisherman. It’s a risk I have to take into account when placing my units.
Goldsmith:
Hey there! I wanted to talk to you about an exciting game I just discovered. It’s all about being a goldsmith on an island, and let me tell you, it’s a blast!
Diving into the Game:
When you become a goldsmith in this game, every time you stand on an island tile, you earn 3 gold coins. It’s a great way to make some extra money and have some fun in the process!
But here’s the thing – it’s not always smooth sailing. Sometimes, a ship comes along and threatens your goldsmith. When that happens, you don’t earn any coins for that particular goldsmith. It’s a bummer, but that’s all part of the excitement!
The Fisherman:
As a fisherman, my only job is to provide food for the Vikings. However, my efforts are only taken into account during the final scoring. In that round, I am only counted in connection with the scout.
Looking Ahead
Once the scoring is done, the current start player passes the start player figure to the person on their left. This person then begins the next round by placing new tiles and Vikings on the wheel.
The Final Tally
After all the 72 tiles have been used up and we’ve completed the third big score, it’s time for the final round of scoring.
Here’s how the final scoring works:
-
Ships: If a warrior doesn’t repel a ship, you lose the value indicated on the unrepelled ship – either in coins or victory points. If you don’t have any coins left, you have to give up victory points on a 1-for-1 basis.
Example: If your ship with a green color is not defended, it will cause you to lose 5 gold coins during the final scoring. On the other hand, an unprotected blue ship will cost you 3 victory points.
Note: During the 6th round, in the final scoring, every player should use their boatmen to transport Vikings from their base to empty islands. You cannot choose to leave Vikings behind if there are available empty islands and boatmen to take them.

End of the Game
After the final scoring, the game concludes. The player with the highest number of victory points wins the game.
