Game Rules for the Ultimate Mastermind
Hey there! I’m here to tell you all about the game rules for the Ultimate Mastermind. So, let’s dive right in!
The Goal:
So, what’s the goal of the game? It’s simple! The goal is for one player to outsmart the other player by guessing the secret code. Exciting, right?
How to Play:
Okay, let’s get into how to play this awesome game. One player becomes the codemaker, while the other player is the codebreaker. The codemaker creates a secret code using different colored pegs. The codebreaker then starts guessing the code.
The codebreaker has to guess both the correct color and the correct order of the pegs in the code. After making a guess, the codemaker provides feedback to the codebreaker. This feedback comes in the form of colored pegs.
If the codebreaker guesses a correct color in the correct position, the codemaker will put a black peg in response. If the codebreaker guesses a correct color but in the wrong position, the codemaker will put a white peg in response.
With each new guess, the codebreaker uses the feedback to narrow down the possibilities and crack the secret code. The codebreaker has a limited number of attempts, so they better make their guesses count!
The game continues until the codebreaker guesses the secret code correctly or runs out of attempts. If the codebreaker can crack the code within the given attempts, they win! But if they can’t, the codemaker is the victorious one.
Tips for Success:
Now, let me give you a few tips to help you succeed in this challenging game:
1. Use logical deduction: Pay attention to the feedback you receive from the codemaker and use it to narrow down your options. Think through your guesses carefully.
2. Keep track of your guesses: It’s important to keep a record of your previous guesses and the resulting feedback. This will help you eliminate possibilities and make smarter guesses.
3. Be strategic: Try different combinations of colors and positions to test your theories. Sometimes, taking a calculated risk can lead to a breakthrough.
Ready to Play?
Now that you know the rules of the Ultimate Mastermind, are you feeling ready to take on the challenge? Grab a friend, set up the game board, and let the codebreaking begin! May the best mind win!

- I have the ultimate MASTERMIND game console! It has a built-in storage area for pegs and a hinged shield to hide the secret code section. Plus, there’s even a scoring area!
- The game comes with approximately 144 large, round-headed pegs in 8 different colors. That’s about 18 of each color!
- There are also about 40 small pegs in red and white. You’ll get about 20 of each color.
Let’s Play!
I’ll be the Codebreaker, and I’ll try to figure out the color sequence of a row of 5 pegs. The goal is to do it in as few turns as possible. After each turn, you’ll give me feedback to help me figure it out!
Getting Started
First, separate the Code pegs from the Key pegs. Then, we’ll decide who will be the Codemaker and who will be the Codebreaker. After the first round, we’ll switch positions. Now, let’s position the board between us. Make sure that the 5 shielded holes for the secret code are facing you, the Codemaker.

Welcome to the Ultimate Game One!
Get ready for an extraordinary experience with 32,768 Variations.
So here’s how it works. I’ll start by secretly placing five Code pegs into the shield, right in those sneaky little holes. Now, pay attention because I can choose from a fancy collection of eight vibrant colors, and I’m not afraid to mix things up. You might even catch me using two or more Code pegs of the same color!
Now it’s your turn to be the Codebreaker. Place your five Code pegs in the first row of holes. Just like me, feel free to go wild and use as many pegs of the same color as you want. Your mission: unravel the puzzle and uncover the exact colors and positions of my cleverly hidden pegs.
But wait, there’s more! Once you’ve made your move, I’ll respond with these little fellas called Key pegs. You can find them hanging out in the Key peg holes on the first row. Here’s what they mean:
- If your Code peg is not only the perfect color but also in the right position, I’ll reward you with a snazzy red Key peg.
- If your Code peg is the right color but in the wrong spot, I’ll cheer you on with a stylish white Key peg.
Remember, the Codemaker is sneakily putting the small Key pegs in any order. This means that as the Codebreaker, you won’t have a clue which Code pegs they match with! It’s all part of the challenge in MASTERMIND, figuring out which Code pegs go with which Key pegs.
Now, if a certain color doesn’t show up at all in the secret code, then don’t bother putting any Key pegs for that color. Check out the “FIRST TURN” EXAMPLE for more clarity.
But what happens when two pegs of the same color appear in both the secret code and the Codebreaker’s row? Well, a Key peg corresponds to each Code peg, and in this case, a red Key peg trumps a white one. Take a look at the “SECOND TURN” EXAMPLE.
As the Codebreaker, you’ll keep placing sets of Code pegs in each row, and the Codemaker will give you Key pegs based on the rules we just discussed. Make sure to leave the Code pegs and the Key pegs in each row until the code is solved!
So, here’s how the game works: I’m the Codebreaker, and I keep putting down rows of Code pegs. Then, I get some feedback from you, the Codemaker. This goes on until I correctly guess the secret code. Once that happens, you reveal the code by placing five red Key pegs. We then score points and switch roles for the next round.
End of the Game
There are two ways we can keep score.
Games Scoring:
I count how many rows it took me to break the code (let’s say eight). Then we switch roles, and you become the Codebreaker. When you manage to crack the code, you count how many rows it took you. The player who solved the code in fewer moves gets a point. We keep playing until one of us wins ten games or the agreed-upon number of games.
Point Scoring:
In the game, I get to decide how many games I want to play. When I break a code, I earn points for each row I played, and I write that number under my name. Then, we switch roles, and the new Codemaker does the same. We keep playing until we reach the agreed-upon number of games, and the player with the highest score wins.
Note: If all 12 rows are used and the code hasn’t been broken, the Codemaker gets awarded 13 points – 12 regular points plus a bonus point.
If I can prove that the Codemaker gave me the wrong information, we replay the game and I earn an extra 3 points. It’s an intense battle of wits and strategy!
Get Ready for Ultimate Game Two
(Hold on to your hats because there are a whopping 59,049 variations to explore!)
If you thought Ultimate Game 1 couldn’t get any more challenging, get ready for Play! It’s just like the original, but with a twist. This time, the Codemaker can leave one or more empty holes in the Code. That means we’ll be using nine Code pegs instead of ten. Think of those empty holes as extra colors the Codemaker could have chosen.
Time to get moving!
Hey, if you take too long as the Codebreaker, we might need to set a time limit. We don’t want the game dragging on forever, right? So let’s keep it snappy. How about a maximum of 3 or 4 minutes for your turns? That should keep things interesting.
