Welcome to Ticket to Ride United Kingdom – an expansion that takes you back to the early days of the railroad adventure. It all started in England during the 19th century.

Here, we’ll discuss the gameplay changes specific to the United Kingdom Map. Assuming you’re already familiar with the original Ticket to Ride rules, let’s dive in. This expansion is designed for 2-4 players.

In 3 and 4 player games, you’ll have the option to use both tracks of the double-routes. However, in 2 player games, once one track of a double-route is taken, the other becomes unavailable.

Game Play

Hey there! If you want to try out this expansion, all you need is 35 Trains (instead of the usual 45) and the matching Scoring Markers from Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe.

No need to worry about the Train cards from your original game because this expansion has its own UK Train card deck, which even includes 6 extra Locomotive Cards.

Locomotives

When the game begins, you and I both get a Locomotive along with our 4 Train Cards.

• You can use any 4 cards as a Locomotive ;
• If 3 or more Locomotives show up among the cards that we can see, we don’t throw them away.

Tickets to Different Destinations

Hey there! Did you know that this expansion comes with 57 Destination Tickets? Pretty cool, right?

When the game starts, each player gets dealt 5 Destination Tickets. But here’s the catch – you have to keep at least 3 of them. During the game, if you want to grab some extra tickets, you can draw 3 and keep at least 1.

Now, the tickets that you decide not to keep, whether it’s at the beginning of the game or after drawing new ones later on, they all get thrown to the bottom of the Destination Tickets deck. Same as in a regular Ticket to Ride game.

Let’s Talk Ferries

Ferries are special routes that connect two neighboring cities over water. You can easily recognize them by the locomotive symbols displayed on one or more spaces along the route. To take control of a Ferry Route, you’ll need to play a Locomotive card for each locomotive symbol on the route. Additionally, you’ll need to play the appropriate colored cards for the remaining spaces on that route.

This expansion includes Technology Cards, which add a new dimension to the game. At the start, players won’t have any technology. They’ll only be able to claim 1 and 2 space routes, and they can only do so in England. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to claim any Ferry routes.

However, there is one exception. The Southampton – New York route is a special one. You can claim it anytime, without needing any Technology. It’s a unique opportunity to make a strategic move without any limitations.

Before I take my regular action, at the beginning of my turn, I have the option to discard Locomotives and purchase ONE Technology Card. Keep in mind that I can use any four cards as a Locomotive, or any three cards if I have the Booster Technology, even during this time.

Price: 1 train. Enables you to secure routes to any of the 5 cities in Wales.

Scotland Concession X4

Cost: Only 1 Locomotive is needed. With this card, you can choose any of the 10 cities in Scotland to claim your route into.

Mechanical Stoker X4

Price: 1 Train. Gives you the power to take 3 shortcuts in your journey.

X4 Turbofuel Engine

Cost: You’ll need 2 Locomotives in order to obtain this item. It’s an essential tool for expanding your reach in the game, enabling you to claim longer space routes of 4, 5, and 6 spaces. However, keep in mind that if you want to claim 3 space routes, you’ll still need the trusty Mechanical Stoker.

X4 Propellers

If you have 2 Locomotives, you can use them as a cost to claim Ferry routes. This booster, which is called Booster X4, allows you to take advantage of these special routes. It’s a simple and effective way to expand your options in the game. With Booster X4, you can strategically plan your moves and explore new routes that might not be available to other players. It adds an extra layer of excitement and surprises to the game, making each playthrough unique. So, if you’re looking for a way to spice up your game, Booster X4 is definitely worth considering. Give it a try and see how it enhances your gameplay experience.

It only costs: 2 Locomotives now. You can use just 3 cards as a Locomotive (instead of the usual 4).

Now, Boiler Lagging X4

Cost: You need 2 Locomotives to acquire Steam Turbines. When you claim a route, you gain an additional point.

Steam Turbines X4

Price: To use this ability, you need to spend 2 Locomotives. By claiming a Ferry route, you will earn an additional 2 points. If you also have Boiler Lagging, the points earned for each Ferry route claimed will increase to 3.

Double Heading X4

The cost for this action is 4 Locomotives. When the game is over, you will earn 2 points for each Ticket that you successfully complete.

Right of Way X1

It’s important to remember that sometimes, claiming a route will require multiple Technology cards.

If you want to claim the route from Stranraer to Londonderry, you’ll need a few important cards: the Scotland Concession card, the Ireland/France Concession card, the Mechanical Stoker card, and the Propellers card.

If you want to claim the route from Newcastle to Edinburgh, you’ll need the Scotland Concession card and the Mechanical Stoker card.

Just a reminder: The Southampton – New York route is a special route that you can claim anytime, without needing any Technology cards.

Scoring

In this expansion, there are no Globetrotter or Longest Route Bonuses.

Some players prefer to tally up their route points at the end of the game, rather than scoring them as they claim each route.

However, in this expansion, the score for certain routes can be affected by technologies like Boiler Lagging or Steam Turbines. So, waiting until the end to compute route points won’t work.

If you think there’s a chance you might forget to keep track of your scoring, here’s a suggestion: choose someone to be the scorekeeper. They can take care of moving all the Score Markers during the game. This way, they can remind everyone else to move the markers when they forget.

Now, let’s talk about the Advanced Technologies variant, which adds an extra layer of competition to the game. Keep in mind that there are only a limited number of Advanced Technologies available.

Double Water Tenders

Cost: Pay 2 Locomotives. When you want to draw Train Cards, you have the choice to draw 3 cards blindly instead of the usual 2.

Take a Chance X1

When you play this game, it’s gonna cost you 2 Locomotives. And here’s the deal – at the end of the game, if you have the most completed Tickets, you’re gonna score 20 points. But if you don’t, well…you lose 20 points.

Now, check this out – you gotta make sure you buy this card before the Train Cards are reshuffled. ‘Cause once that reshuffle happens, you can’t buy these cards anymore. They gotta go back in the box.

Equalising Beam X1

Diesel Power X1

Cost: 3 Locomotives. When you want to claim a Route, you have the option to play 1 fewer card than you normally would. But remember, you still have to play at least 1 card! And sorry, but you can’t skip using a Locomotive card on a Ferry route.
