The Shipwreck Arcana Game Rules

Welcome to the Shipwreck Arcana game rules! I’m here to help you understand how to play the game so you can dive right in and have a great time!

Objective

The goal of Shipwreck Arcana is to correctly deduce the values of two hidden Fate Tokens. By using logic and deduction, you must work together with your fellow players to figure out which Tokens are hidden and what values they hold. It’s a real test of your wits!

Components

Before we get started, let’s take a look at the components of the game:

  • 1 Fate Track
  • 31 Arcana Cards
  • 4 Intuition Tokens
  • 8 Fate Tokens
  • 1 Doom Token
  • 1 Rulebook (you’re reading it!)

Setup

Setting up the game is quick and easy:

  1. Place the Fate Track in the center of the play area. This track will keep track of the Fate Tokens.
  2. Shuffle the Arcana Cards and deal two to each player.
  3. Place the Intuition Tokens within reach of all players.
  4. Place the Fate Tokens and Doom Token within reach of all players.

Gameplay

Now that everything is set up, let’s talk about how to play:

  1. The youngest player goes first. Play then proceeds clockwise.
  2. On your turn, you must take one of the following actions:
    • Play an Arcana Card from your hand onto the Fate Track. This will provide a clue to the other players.
    • Guess the values of the hidden Fate Tokens.
    • Discard an Arcana Card from your hand to gain an Intuition Token.
    • Pass your turn to the next player.
  3. If you play an Arcana Card, you must follow these rules:
    • The card must be played on the Fate Track adjacent to an existing card.
    • The card’s value must be either one higher or one lower than the adjacent card.
    • You must announce the value of the card as you play it.
    • If the Doom Token reaches “0” on the Doom Track, you lose the game!
  4. When guessing the values of the Fate Tokens, you must announce your guess and explain the reasoning behind it. The other players will then confirm or deny your guess. If they deny it, you must try again on your next turn!
  5. To gain an Intuition Token, you must discard an Arcana Card from your hand. You may then use the Intuition Token on a later turn to help you with your deductions.
  6. Play continues until one of the following conditions is met:
    • All Fate Tokens are revealed and correctly guessed, resulting in a win!
    • The Doom Token reaches “0” on the Doom Track, resulting in a loss!
    • All players decide to quit the game, resulting in a draw.

Conclusion

Now that you know the rules, you’re all set to start playing Shipwreck Arcana! Remember to use logic, deduction, and teamwork to uncover the hidden Fate Tokens and achieve victory. Good luck, and may the Fate be with you!

Components

  • There are 20 Arcana cards.
  • You will also find 1 The Hours card.
  • For tracking your progress, there are 2 score/doom trackers.
  • Inside the game, there is a token bag.
  • You will need 21 Fate tokens.
  • And finally, 35 Number line tokens.
  • Don’t forget to read the instructions!

Setup

Now, let’s set up the game!

Place The Hours card on the left side of the central play area. Make sure the green score tracker is set to 0. Depending on how challenging you want the game to be, adjust the red doom tracker:

  • If you want it to be easy, set the doom tracker to 0.
  • For a normal difficulty, set it at 2 doom.
  • If you’re feeling brave and want a hard challenge, set it at 4 doom.
  • And if you’re up for a true test, set the doom tracker to 6 doom.
  • Now, let’s shuffle the Arcana cards and place them face-up. Put the deck on top of The Hours card. Take the top 4 Arcana cards and line them up to the right of The Hours card.

  • Each player will need 7 number line tokens in their chosen color. If there are less than 5 players, you can put away any extra number line tokens.

  • To get started, put all 21 fate tokens into the bag and give it a good shake to mix them up. Then, place the bag in the middle of the play area.
  • Now, it’s time to choose who goes first. You’ll take turns in a clockwise direction.
  • The Hours Card

The Hours card is always in play and is easily recognizable with its dark background, unlike the arcana cards. It has a score track and doesn’t have a limited duration.

Unlike the arcana cards, the Hours card doesn’t have any ability on its back side. It can’t be removed from play, cycled, or fade away. Keep in mind that the Hours card is not considered an arcana card.

Here’s an example setup for a game with 5 players on the Easy difficulty level, after a few events have already taken place.

    Magical Cards

The front side of each magical card shows a unique name, image, and ability. The back side of each card displays its weakened power.

Throughout the game, the magical cards are always face-up, meaning you can see the front side of the top card. In the central play area, alongside the special card “The Hours,” there are always 4 face-up magical cards.

As time passes, the magical cards in play will become weaker and eventually leave the central play area, turning over to their faded side (known as “Fading”).

    Fate Tokens

Hey there! So, fate tokens are pretty important in this game. They’re black and have a value on the front, ranging from 1 to 7. The number of hours it takes to play them is also shown.

The other players will try to predict the value of the fate using their arcana cards. The hours on the fate token determine how quickly the arcana cards fade from play.

    • If a fate has a value of 1, 2, or 3, it takes 1 hour to play.
    • If a fate has a value of 4, 5, or 6, it takes 2 hours to play.
    • If a fate has a value of 7, it takes 3 hours to play.

Fate tokens are drawn from the bag and go back into the bag when they’re discarded or no longer in play.

Now, let’s talk about number line tokens.

Each player has their own set of number line tokens. These tokens have numbers from 1 to 7, and you arrange them in front of you.

When it’s my turn, my friends can ask me to change some of my number line tokens to show what they think the value of my hidden fate is, or isn’t. I should only change my number line if someone asks me to.

My number line lets my friends keep track of information about my hidden fate when it’s not my turn. I shouldn’t reset my number line at the end of my turn, unless my friends have made a guess.

Other than their colors, the number line tokens are just like fates. The little dots on them don’t do anything, but they help us remember how many hours each fate has.

    Powers of Faded Cards

When an arcana card loses its power (referred to as Fading), I flip it over and move it to the area below the central play area. The back of each arcana card actually hides a useful power that can be used by us, the players. Once we use a card’s faded power, we put that card face-up at the bottom of the arcana deck.

Each faded power clearly explains what it does and when and how we can use it. Some powers are exclusive to the active player, while others are only available to the group of players who predict.

We can only use one faded power per turn. It’s important to note that using a faded power doesn’t mean we have to make a prediction that turn. We have the freedom to choose when to utilize the faded power.

I want to talk about something really interesting today. It’s something called “faded power.” Have you ever heard of it before? If you haven’t, don’t worry. I’ll explain it to you.

So, faded power is something that the active player can use. But what exactly does that mean? Well, let me break it down for you. When I say “active player,” I mean the person who is currently playing the game. This person has the ability to use faded powers. These powers are not permanent or strong like regular powers. They are, you could say, a bit faded.

Now, here’s where it gets really interesting. Not only can the active player use faded powers, but the group of players who are predicting what the active player will do can also use them. That means everyone gets a chance to benefit from these faded powers.

But what can you actually do with faded powers? Well, some of them allow the group to ask the active player questions. And guess what? The active player can only respond with a “yes” or a “no.” That’s it! Can you imagine how tricky it can be to ask the right questions and get the information you need with such limited answers?

Now, here’s the really cool thing. There is no limit to the number of faded powers that can be available. That means you can have as many as you want! And guess what again? These powers are not tied to any particular player. So, anyone in the group can use them. It’s like having a whole arsenal of faded powers at your disposal.

I hope you found this little introduction to faded powers interesting. It’s a unique concept in the game that adds an extra layer of strategy and excitement. So, the next time you play, keep an eye out for faded powers and see how they can elevate your game to a whole new level.

When playing this game, I have an important rule to follow: any cards that get discarded should be placed face down below the central playing area. Once you do that, make sure you move those cards to the bottom of the deck. It might seem like a small detail, but it’s actually really important for the game to run smoothly.

How to play The Shipwreck Arcana Official Rules UltraFoodMess

    The Adventure Begins

When it’s my turn to play, I become the active player. Let me walk you through the steps I take:

    Draw

    Play

    Predict (if I want to)

    Resolve

    Fade

    Keep Your Cards Close

During the game, we should be careful not to reveal any information about the fate of our hidden cards. It’s best if I don’t talk to the other players unless I’m responding to a prediction.

    The Fading Shadows

As the hours pass, the power of my arcana cards fades. When the total number of pips on the card is equal to or greater than the number of moons at the bottom, it’s time for the card to fade away.

When an arcana card fades, I must perform the following steps:

How to play The Shipwreck Arcana Official Rules UltraFoodMess

    1. First, take all the fates in front of it and put them back in the bag.
    2. Next, flip it over and place it below the central play area.
    3. Then, if your allies didn’t make a correct prediction this turn, advance the players’ doom by 2!
    4. After that, refill the row of arcana cards by putting the top card of the arcana deck face-up in the empty spot.

Remember, The Hours card is different from other arcana cards and never fades. Any fates played in front of The Hours move to the arcana card on its immediate right.

    End of the Game

The game is over when one of the score trackers reaches the 7th spot on The Hours’ score track.

    • You win if you make 7 correct predictions (when the green score tracker reaches 7).
    • You lose if your doom reaches 7 (when the red doom tracker reaches 7).

    Adding or Removing Players

If you want to play the game, I’ll give you some number line tokens and find you a spot in the turn order. And if you decide to leave the game, I’ll take back your tokens and any fate you were holding.

If you’re up for a challenge in a two-player game, you can increase the difficulty by giving each player two number lines, called A and B. The turn order will be player 1’s turn A, then player 2’s turn A, followed by player 1’s turn B, and finally player 2’s turn B. Make sure to keep the hidden fates separate for each type of turn. Adding these extra turns will intensify the pressure on the arcana cards to fade away.
