The Grimm Forest Game Rules
Welcome to The Grimm Forest, a whimsical and enchanting game filled with magical creatures and daring adventures. In this guide, I will walk you through the key rules and strategies that will help you navigate this fascinating world.
Let’s begin with the basic objective of the game. The goal is to build and protect your own fantastical structures while outsmarting your opponents. As you progress through the game, you will encounter various challenges and opportunities that will test your decision-making skills and strategic thinking.
One of the most important aspects of The Grimm Forest is resource management. You will need to gather resources like wood, straw, and brick to construct your buildings. These materials can be obtained through various actions, such as gathering from the fields or the mine. But be careful, as other players can also try to steal your hard-earned resources!
As you gather resources and construct buildings, you will also need to keep an eye out for the mischievous creatures inhabiting The Grimm Forest. These creatures can be both helpful and troublesome, so be prepared to negotiate with them or defend yourself when necessary.
In addition to managing resources and interacting with creatures, you will also have the opportunity to take part in special events and quests. These events can bring fortune or misfortune, depending on your choices. So, choose wisely and be prepared to adapt to unexpected situations as they arise.
Throughout the game, you will also have the chance to forge alliances with other players. Working together can be beneficial, allowing you to share resources and overcome challenges more easily. However, remember that in the end, there can only be one winner, so choose your allies wisely.
As you immerse yourself in The Grimm Forest, don’t forget to let your imagination run wild. The game offers a rich and vibrant world where anything is possible. So, embrace the magic, explore the depths of the forest, and may the best player win!
Remember, these rules are just a starting point. The true essence of The Grimm Forest lies in the joy of discovery and the thrill of unexpected adventures. So, gather your friends, dive into this enchanting world, and let your imagination soar! The Grimm Forest awaits you.

In The Grimm Forest, I am a niece or nephew of one of the famous 3 Little Pigs. My goal is to build three houses quickly using Straw, Wood, or Brick. To do this, I will need to gather resources from different areas in the Grimm Forest.
When multiple Pigs go to the same location, we have to share the resources we find. But if I’m the only one there, I get to keep everything I find. To add an extra twist, I can use Fable cards to deceive and trick the other Pigs as we scramble to collect enough resources for our houses.
Throughout the game, I will encounter Friend cards that introduce strange allies from the Grimm Forest. These allies can help me achieve my goals.
The object of the game is to be the first player to build three houses. It’s a race to see who can gather the necessary resources and complete their houses the fastest.
Congratulations on finding this exciting game! Let me tell you all about it. The goal of the game is to be the first player to construct three houses using a combination of Straw, Wood, and Brick. Sounds fun, right?
Now, let’s talk about the components you’ll find in the game. You’ll get 4 Gather Location Boards, 16 Gather Cards, 4 Player Aid Cards, 4 Player Boards, 45 House Sections, 56 Fable Cards, 25 Cards, 50 Single Resources, 15 Mega Resources, 3 First Builder Bonus Tokens, 4 Pig miniatures, 6 Monster miniatures, 1 Starting Player Token, and 1 “Prince Regal” Resource Die. Quite a lot of stuff to dive into!
Setting up the game is simple. Just place the three Gather Location boards (Fields, Forest, and Brickyard) in the center of the play area, next to each other. If you’re playing with four players, add the Market board as well. But if there are fewer players, you can remove this board from the game.
So there you have it! You now have all the tools you need to start building your houses and compete to be the first to reach three. Have a great time!
Let’s get started with setting up the game:
1. First, gather all the single and mega resource tokens and place them next to their respective gather location boards to create the supply.
2. Next, take the mega straw token (worth 5 straw) and place it on the fields board. Then, place the mega wood token (worth 4 wood) on the woods board, and the mega brick token (worth 3 brick) on the brickyard board.
And that’s it! Now you’re ready to begin playing the game.
When you’re playing a game with four people, you’ll need to set up the board. First, take one token of each type (Straw, Wood, Brick) and place them on the Market board.
Next, you’ll want to get the three First Builder Bonus tokens ready. Put them at the bottom of their corresponding Gather Location boards.
Now, it’s time to prepare the building materials. Take the Floor, Walls, and Roof House Sections and place them next to the Gather Location boards.
Don’t forget the Fable and Friend cards! Shuffle them into separate decks and place them face down next to the Gather Location boards.
Lastly, make sure you have the Monster miniatures ready to go. Keep them nearby so you can access them easily.
When we start playing the game, the first thing we do is choose our colors. I can pick any color I want and take the Player board, the Gather cards (Gather Straw, Gather Wood, and Gather Brick), and the Pig miniature in that color. In a game with 4 players, we also get the Gather Market card along with the other Gather cards. But if there are fewer players, we remove the Gather Market cards.
I also get a Player Aid card to help me during the game. Now, we need to decide who will go first. We give the Starting Player token to the person who ate bacon most recently. Once this is done, we are ready to start!
Game Play
The game is made up of different rounds, and each round has 3 phases that we play in a specific order.
I. Gather

Now it’s time for me to go to the Gather Locations. This is where I’ll gather all the resources I need to build my house. It’s important to pay attention to my Friend and Fable abilities because they can activate at any step. Each card will tell me when it takes effect.

- First, I need to pick a Gather card from my hand. If I want, I can also choose a Fable card. Once I’ve made my choices, I’ll place them face down on the table, with the Fable card on top.
- Now it’s time to reveal all the Fable cards that were played. If any Fable cards have a special “When Revealed” effect, we need to resolve them.

Hey there! Let me tell you something interesting about Fable and Friend card activations. When multiple cards of these types activate together, we deal with them one by one, following a specific order.
I want to talk to you about Pigs in a game. It’s interesting how they gather resources in different Locations, but it can get a bit tricky when there are more than one Pig in a Location. In that case, the resources have to be divided equally among the players. We can even round down if needed, but any leftovers stay in that Location for the next Gather phase. That way, no resources go to waste, and everyone gets a fair share.
After the Gathering phase, we need to resolve any Fable effects that activate at the “End of Gather Phase”. These effects can have a big impact on the game, so it’s important to pay attention to them and take them into account when planning your strategy.
Once all the Fable effects are resolved, each player returns their Gather card to their hand. We also place any resolved Fable cards in a face-up discard pile near the Fable deck. Some Fables may stay in play longer than others, so we don’t discard those until indicated. And finally, any Monster miniatures on Locations are returned to the supply. It’s all about keeping everything organized and ready for the next phase of the game.
II. Build
During this phase, I will do things to get what I need, get Fable cards, and use what I have to make House sections. It’s my turn to play, so I get to do some stuff.
On my turn, I can do two things. I can do the same thing two times, or I can do two different things. I have three options for each thing I do:

A) Get a Fable Card
I take the top card from the Fable deck and add it to my hand. I can collect as many Fables as I want in my hand.
B) Get 1 Resource
I collect 1 resource of my choice from the Supply. I can hold as many resources as I want.
C) Build
I build one section of my House. To do this, I need to pay the appropriate resources by giving them back to the Supply. Then, I add the new House section to my Player board. I must use the correct type of resource to build the section. For example, I need to use Straw to build a Straw section.
Building Rules Reinterpreted
Let’s talk about building rules. Now, I know what you’re thinking – rules can be a little boring sometimes. But trust me, understanding these rules is crucial when it comes to building anything. You see, there’s a lot more to building than simply putting things together. There are certain guidelines we need to follow to ensure that our structures are safe, sturdy, and stand the test of time. So, let’s dive right in and explore some of the key rules that you need to know!
First and foremost, we must remember that safety should always be our top priority. When you’re building something, whether it’s a simple model or a real-life structure, it’s important to keep safety in mind. That means using the right tools and equipment, wearing protective gear, and being aware of your surroundings. By taking these precautions, you can minimize the risk of accidents and ensure that everyone involved in the building process stays safe.
Another important rule to consider is planning. Before you start building anything, it’s essential to have a plan. Take the time to think about what you want to build, how you’re going to build it, and what materials you’re going to need. Planning ahead can save you a lot of time, effort, and even money in the long run. It allows you to anticipate any challenges that may arise and come up with solutions before they become problems. So, grab a pen and paper, and start sketching out your ideas!
Now, let’s talk about measuring and leveling. You might think that eyeballing it is good enough, but trust me, accuracy is key. When it comes to building, every millimeter matters. That’s why it’s important to use measuring tools, such as a tape measure or a ruler, to ensure that your cuts and dimensions are precise. Levelling is also crucial to ensure that your structure is straight and balanced. So, grab your tools, and get ready to measure and level like a pro!
Another important rule is following instructions. Whether you’re building a Lego set or assembling a piece of furniture, it’s always a good idea to read the instructions. Instructions provide valuable information on how to properly assemble and use the building materials. They can save you from making costly mistakes and ensure that your structure turns out just the way you want it to. So, take a deep breath, read those instructions, and follow them step by step. You’ll be glad you did!
Lastly, don’t forget to have fun! Building is a creative and rewarding process. It allows you to bring your ideas to life and create something tangible with your own two hands. So, embrace the joy of building, and let your imagination run wild. Whether you’re building a towering skyscraper or a simple birdhouse, remember to enjoy the journey and take pride in your creations.
So there you have it – some of the key rules of building. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your structures are safe, sturdy, and successful. Whether you’re a seasoned builder or just starting out, these rules will serve as a strong foundation for all your future projects. So grab your hard hat and tool belt, and let’s get building!

- First, you need to build each floor, then the walls, and finally the roof of your houses.
- You can work on multiple houses simultaneously, but you can’t start a new house if you haven’t finished a house of the same type.
- After you finish a house, you can start a new house of the same type.
- There are only enough house sections to build five houses of each kind. Once they’re gone, you can’t build that type of house anymore.
- You can only start a new house if you have an empty Build Site on your Player board. Each Player Board has 5 Build Sites.
I’m faced with a decision – it’s time to Build. I have 4 Wood and 3 Straw in my possession. I could use them to construct a Straw Floor or add Wood Walls onto the Wood Floor I built previously. I need to keep in mind that I may not be able to build a Wood Floor right now because I already have a Wood house in progress.
After weighing my options, I opt to build the Wood Walls. I return the 4 Wood to the supply and take a Wood Walls section from there. Carefully, I stack it on top of my existing Wood Floor.
Great! Since I successfully built a Walls section, I now get to draw a Friend card. This is where things get interesting – I have the choice to either keep the card for myself or pass it along to someone else. The power is in my hands!
Special Actions Ahead
When you play certain Friend cards, you get to do Special Actions. Now, these Special Actions might vary depending on the card you’re using. They’re pretty cool because they allow you to do something extra and special during your turn. And guess what? You can do these Special Actions along with your regular Actions! You get two Actions in your Build phase, and one of them can be a Special Action. The catch is, you can only do each Special Action once per turn. So, you can’t just keep using the same Special Action over and over again. But here’s the really neat part: you can use the Special Action of one Friend, get a new Friend, and then use their Special Action, all in the same turn. Talk about a power move!
The Fairy Godmother card has a cool ability that lets you draw 2 Fable cards. It’s a super strong move!
Buddies

Friends are like the supporting characters in a fairy tale. They have special powers that can help you along your journey. You can gain friends by building walls, using Friend and Fable cards, or by taking the 1st Builder Bonus. When you gain a Friend, you can choose to keep it for yourself or give it to another player. The other player doesn’t have a choice, they have to accept it. You can find more information about Friend Cards in the game’s details.
Remember, you can only have one Friend at a time. If you decide to keep a Friend or if another player gives you one, you have to let go of your current Friend and keep the new one instead.
Let’s talk about Special Actions. You know, those cool abilities that some Friends have? Well, they can really come in handy during the Build Phase. The thing is, you can only use one Friend’s Special Action per turn. So, if you use a Special Action, get a new Friend, and that new Friend also has a Special Action, you can use it too. But remember, you can only use each Special Action once per turn. It’s like a little extra boost that can help you out!

I drew a Friend (RUMPELSTILTSKIN) from the deck because I built a Walls section. I already have Goldilocks as a Friend and want to keep her, so I pass Rumpelstiltskin to another player. That player is forced to discard their existing friend and keep Rumpelstiltskin.
First Builder Bonus
When I finish building a house, if it’s the first house of that type (Straw, Wood, or Brick) that anyone has built, I earn the First Builder Bonus for that type. I take the Bonus token for that type and keep it in front of me. Then I also get to choose one of these rewards:
- I can take one Straw, one Wood, and one Brick from the Supply.
- I can draw two Fable cards from the top of the deck.
- I can draw one Friend card from the top of the deck.
When you want to make a new friend, just follow these simple steps:
First, be kind and friendly to the person you want to be friends with. Treat them with respect and show interest in what they have to say. Everyone likes to feel valued and heard, so listening attentively is key.
Next, try to find common interests or activities that you both enjoy. Shared hobbies or passions can help to create a strong bond between friends.
Don’t be afraid to be yourself and let your true personality shine. Authenticity is important in building genuine connections. When you are genuine and true to yourself, you attract like-minded people who appreciate and accept you for who you are.
Remember, making friends is a two-way street. It’s not just about what you can gain from the friendship, but also what you can contribute. Show that you are a reliable, supportive, and trustworthy friend.
Lastly, don’t rush the friendship-building process. Good friendships take time to develop and grow. Be patient and give the relationship the time and space it needs to deepen.
By following these steps and being open to forming new connections, you can increase your chances of finding and making lasting friendships that enrich your life.

- Okay, here’s what you gotta do: pass the Starting Player marker to the next player clockwise.
- Make sure everyone grabs their Pig from the Location boards (and check that you have all of your Gather cards in your hand).
- Next, replenish all three Gather Location boards by adding one Mega Resource of the corresponding type from the Supply (this is on top of any resources that were leftover from the previous round).
- If you’re playing with four players, put a Single resource token of each type (Straw, Wood, and Brick) onto the Market board.
By the way, in case you forgot, there were 3 Brick left behind in the Brickyard and 1 Straw in the Fields from the previous round. And now, with the new Mega resource tokens, we’ll have plenty of good options for Gathering next round!
Game Over, Man!
When the Build Phase comes to an end, and if there’s someone who managed to complete three houses, the game is over! (And it doesn’t matter if the houses are of different types or the same type.)
If only one player has managed to build three complete houses, they are declared the winner of the game!
If more than one player has three complete houses, the winner is the Pig who built the strongest houses. In terms of strength, Brick Houses are the sturdiest, followed by Wood, and then Straw.
The winner is the tied player who built the most Brick houses. If that is still tied, it goes to the tied player who built the most Wood houses. And if there’s still a tie, the final tiebreaker is the tied player who owns the First Builder Bonus token for the strongest type of house.

Hey there! Have you ever played a game called “Build the Houses”? It’s super fun and exciting! The goal is simple: be the first one to finish building three houses. But here’s the catch – the sturdier your houses are, the better chance you have of winning tie-breakers! So, let’s dive into all the awesome details and strategies to help you become a master house builder!

Let’s take a look at an example: The Orange player has made 2 Brick Houses and 1 Straw House. The Blue Player, on the other hand, has built 1 Brick House and 2 Wood Houses. Since Orange has more Brick houses, Orange is declared the winner!
How 2-Player Games Differ
In a game with only 2 players, a new character called Prince Regal joins in. He’s a neutral player who’s added to the game. Every turn, he helps himself to half of the resources from one of the Locations. He does this to gather supplies for his own future palace, hoping to move out of the Royal Palace one day.
When setting up the game, make sure to place the Prince Regal Resource Die next to the Gather Location Boards.
Every time we start the Gather phase, I roll the Resource Die. I collect half of the resources from the Location that the die indicates, rounding down. I return these resources to the supply. After that, both of us choose our Gather and Fable cards, and the game continues as usual.
If any Location has more than 10 resources on it, I don’t need to roll the die. Instead, I automatically take resources from the Location with the most resources. If multiple Locations have more than 10 resources and they have the same amount, I prefer Brick first, then Wood, and finally Straw.
When I take resources, I’m not considered to be “at” the Location. This means that any Fable cards that mention a player being alone or not don’t affect me, and I can’t be caught by Monsters.
Prince Regal example: Let’s talk about Prince Regal. At the beginning of each round, we roll the Prince Regal die, which determines the resource we’ll focus on. For example, if the die shows Brick, we know that the Brickyard Location has 5 Brick on it. Now here’s the tricky part: we need to calculate how many resources Prince Regal gets from the Brickyard. To do this, we divide the number of resources by two. In this case, half of 5 rounded down is 2. So Prince Regal gets 2 Brick from the Brickyard, and the remaining 3 stay there.
Differences In 4-player Games
In a 4-player game, there are some additional rules to keep in mind. These rules are scattered throughout the rulebook, but I’ll gather them here for your convenience. The main difference in a 4-player game is the addition of the Market Location.
During Setup, we need to lay out the Market Location along with the others. The Market Location should have one of each resource on it. And don’t forget, each player needs to have their Gather Market card in addition to their usual three cards.
Now, let’s talk about the Market. It’s just like any other Location on the board. During the Gather phase, if multiple Pigs end up in the Market, we need to divide the resources there by drafting. We wouldn’t want things to get too chaotic now, would we?
So, here’s how it goes. We all take turns picking resources one at a time. Each of us gets an equal share, but any extras get left behind. For example, let’s say there are three of us and we have five resources. Each of us will get one, and two will be left behind.
Then, when it’s time to clean up, we put one of each resource (Straw, Wood, and Brick) in the Market. We also add any leftover resources from the last round. This way, the Market is always stocked and ready for the next round.
